Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Seawater inlet of Indian Ocean

Answer: Red Sea

In the case of the Red Sea, an inlet is a narrow passage of water between two large land masses - the continent of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Measuring 1,450 miles (2,335 km) long and 190 miles (330 km) wide, it has connected the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean since the Suez Canal opened in 1869.

The Red Sea is considered to be one of the most active waterways in the world.
2. Seasonal home of the sailfish

Answer: Red Sea

The Arabian Gulf sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) prefers to live in tropical and subtropical waters, and normally makes the Red Sea its home from October to April. Able to swim as fast as 68 miles (109 km) per hour, the sailfish is considered to be the fastest fish in the world. Considered by sporting anglers to be a prize catch, fishing for the sailfish is allowed in some areas that border the Red Sea.
3. Parted in the Bible

Answer: Red Sea

The parting of the Red Sea in the Bible is described in Exodus 14:21: "And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided". (King James Version)

Ancient Hebrews called the Red Sea "Yam Suph", which means Sea of Reeds. But when Moses' crossing of the sea was told in the King James Version of the Bible, the name was changed to the Red Sea. Today scholars are still debating exactly where the actual crossing took place.
4. May be named for type of algae

Answer: Red Sea

There are several common theories about how the Red Sea got its name. Some sources says that it is because of the reflection of the Harei Edom, a red mountain range that is nearby. Others say that it is because it borders on desert land the ancient Egyptians called "red land".

Still others say it is because the sea, which is normally a deep blue green color, contains a type of algae called "Trichodesmium erythraeum". Although the algae is from the blue-green algae group, is blooms periodically. When the blooms die, they are a reddish-brown color, which might explain how the sea was named.
5. Arm of Pacific Ocean

Answer: Yellow Sea

The Yellow Sea is located in Asia, between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula. Compared to other seas, it is rather shallow in some areas because it is located on a continental shelf. At 600 miles (870 km) long and 430 miles wide (556 km), the Yellow Sea eventually merges with the East China Sea.
6. May be named for type of silt

Answer: Yellow Sea

Many scholars believe that the Yellow Sea is named for the same reason as the Huang He, which is also known as the Yellow River - yellow-colored silt is carried by the river into the sea. And the same colored particles are also deposited by the Yangtze River. Together, both rivers dump an enormous amount of silt annually into the sea.

In China the Yellow Sea is called the Huang Hai. It is also known as the West Sea in North and South Korea.
7. Spotted seal thrives there

Answer: Yellow Sea

The spotted seal ("Phoca largha") enjoys living in icy cold water; its usual habitat is in the area of the Beaufort, Chukchi, Bering, and Okhotsk Seas, along with the northern region of the Yellow Sea. A population of spotted seals live at a nature reserve located on Baengnyeong Island, which is the western part of South Korea.
8. Became peace zone in 2018

Answer: Yellow Sea

The northern arm of the Yellow Sea is called the Korea Bay. On November 1, 2018, the area was designated as a peace zone between North and South Korea in the water region that touches the demarcation line between the two countries. This was done in order to decrease military altercations between the two countries and to create safer conditions for fishermen.
9. Arm of Arctic Ocean

Answer: White Sea

The White Sea is technically an arm of the Barents Sea, which is, in turn, an arm of the Arctic Ocean. Approximately 100 miles (185 km) long and (100 km) wide, it is completely within the boundaries of the Russian Federation, and has been a very important shipping port for centuries. For a time during the 15th-18th centuries, until the founding of St. Petersburg, it was part of the major trade route in and out of Russia.
10. May be named for ice

Answer: White Sea

There are two theories concerning the White Sea's name. One is that it appears to be white due to the reflection of the sky. The other is that it was named for the snow and ice that is evident in the region for six or seven months of the year. Modern day icebreakers ensure that the White Sea is navigable year round.
11. Home of beluga whale

Answer: White Sea

The beluga whale, or "Delphinapterus leucas", prefers to live in arctic or sub-arctic waters. It is also called the white whale; its color is viewed to be an adaptation to life in a region where the white skin serves as camouflage against predators like polar bears.
12. Has a gorlo

Answer: White Sea

In Russian the word gorlo means throat. The White Sea Gorlo is a strait, or narrow passage of water, that connects the White Sea with the Barents Sea. It is approximately 100 miles (160 km) long and 29-58 miles (46-93 km) wide.
