Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Turkish city sits directly on the Aegean Sea?

Answer: Izmir

Though Turkey has another more famous 'I' city in Istanbul, that particular major destination is on the Sea of Marmara and not the Aegean. Instead you'd need to head south along the coast to get to Izmir, the third-largest Turkish city and one of the oldest, being used as a mercantile port for several thousand years. Izmir sits near the Ancient Greek City of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site only a short distance inland, and formerly the closest city to the Ancient Wonder known as the Temple of Artemis.
2. Which nation is further east?

Answer: Iran

The vast majority of Iran is further east than the easternmost point of Iraq, a nation that's smack-dab in the middle of the Middle East. Iran actually cuts off Iraq's access to water a great deal (along with Kuwait), leaving Iraq with a narrow fifty-eight kilometre stretch of coastline on the Persian Gulf. Iran's coastline, meanwhile, stretches twenty-eight hundred kilometres from Iraq's border to Pakistan, one of three countries on its own eastern border (along with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan). Depicted is the city of Tehran, Iran's capital.
3. Which 'I' state borders Canada?

Answer: Idaho

Found in the Northwest United States, the state of Idaho only narrowly borders Canada as its northernmost reach only borders British Columbia for about seventy kilometres. Sitting smack-dab in the Rockies, it's a picturesque state with several protected reaches, vast tracts of ranch land, and low population density. Visitors can stop by Yellowstone National Park or dozens of State Parks throughout the region, most of which are surrounded by mountain ranges like the Grand Tetons to the southeast (in Wyoming) or forests, like the borders with Washington and Oregon to the west.
4. Which of these landmasses contains Spain?

Answer: The Iberian Peninsula

Found in the southwest of Europe, the Iberian Peninsula is a landmass that includes both the nations of Portugal and Spain, branding off from the rest of the mainland at the Pyrenees where Spain connects to France. A warm region of the continent, it's known for its sunny cities, its western cliffs, its idyllic beaches to the north and east, and its rich cuisine consisting of seafood on the coasts and ranch-raised meat in the interior. Cities of note in this region include Lisbon and Porto in Portugal and Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville in Spain.
5. Lucknow, Chandigarh, and Gangtok are all cities in what nation?

Answer: India

All three of these cities are in vastly different parts of the nation as well with Lucknow being in Uttar Pradesh in the north, Chandigarh being in Punjab even further north, and Gangtok being in Sikkim, far to the northeast, nestled between Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in the Himalayas. One of the most populated nations in the world, it's also one of extreme variety with massive urban locales, Indian Ocean coastal reaches, deserts, Himalayan peaks, and forested expanses.

There's also a significant religious culture to India with many of its waterways and monuments acting as sacred spaces for various schools of faith.
6. The Peloponnese, including the city of Patras, can be found on what body of water?

Answer: Ionian Sea

The Ionian Sea is a section of the Mediterranean along the European coast starting from the southern tip of Sicily, extending north to Salento, Italy, and crossing over to Albania, the Peloponnese of Greece, and the Ionian Islands (including Corfu and Ithaca). If you were to continue northward towards Croatia and Slovenia, you'd reach the Adriatic. Though it may be apparent to those who've been to Sicily, the Ionian Sea is known for its still-present volcanic activity.
7. Formerly known as Jemulpo, what South Korean city is seen here?

Answer: Incheon

One of South Korea's largest cities, Incheon is located in northwest South Korea near the North Korean border and abuts onto the greater urban area of the nation's capital, Seoul. The gateway to South Korea, considering it contains the nation's largest airport and one of its busiest ports, Incheon has historically been a city of industry and technology.

It became a key part of the Incheon Free Economic Zone in 2003, becoming a critical component of South Korea's aim to become a tech and business hub destination.
8. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, seen here, are found in what country?

Answer: Italy

Tre Cime di Lavaredo, or the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, are three distinctive peaks found in the Italian Dolomites in Northeastern Italy. Found near the Austrian border, they're some of the beautiful mountains accessible from the early Winter Olympic city of Cortina d'Ampezzo, due north of Venice.

It's one of many distinctive regions in a country containing everything from snow-capped Alps to sunny beaches to famous volcanoes to rolling, hilly vineyards.
9. Which of these four cities is the Tyrolean capital?

Answer: Innsbruck

One of the larger cities in Austria, Innsbruck is quite the distance from the capital of the country, Vienna, as it's located further west in the Alps sandwiched between Germany to the north and Italy to the south. Host of the Winter Olympics on more than one past occasion, it's a go-to destination for winter sports, especially skiing.

The historic region of Tyrol, which included parts of Germany, Austria, and Italy, held its capital here until World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. Tyrol remains the name of this province in Austria as it heads west to Vorarlberg.
10. What country can be found between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Galilee?

Answer: Israel

With the Mediterranean making up the entire western coastline of the country and the Sea of Galilee, actually a lake, taking up a small part of the nation's eastern border with the Golan Heights, Israel is actually quite the narrow country, being no more than one hundred fourteen kilometres across at its widest expanse.

Inhabited for thousands of years, Israel contains still-inhabited ancient cities like Jerusalem and newer, modern destinations like Tel Aviv.
