Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island, but which of the following is it?

Answer: It is the smallest state in the US

Rhode Island's area is approximately 1,214 square miles and is the smallest of the 50 states of the United States. Delaware ranks 49th with 2,489 square miles. Because of its small size it is actually the second most densely populated state, behind New Jersey (2011 statistics). Being a coastal state, Rhode Island does have a low mean elevation but several states are at a lower elevation, namely Louisiana.
2. Rhode Island may not be an island, but does it have any islands?

Answer: Yes

There are over 30 islands within the bay and ocean off the mainland. Popular tourist destination and one of "The Last Great Places", Block Island, is located 12 miles off the southern coast of Rhode Island.
3. How many states does Rhode Island share a border with?

Answer: 3

Rhode Island borders with Massachusetts to the east and north. It also has a land border with Connecticut to the west. And the tricky part to this question is that it also has a water border with New York to the south west. Long Island, which stretches into the Atlantic Ocean and is the part of New York which has a border with Rhode Island, is an island and it's bigger than Rhode Island!
4. Which of the following bodies of water does NOT border along Rhode Island?

Answer: Massachusetts Bay

Narrangansett Bay is the largest bay which inlets into the main part of Rhode Island. Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean are both to the south of the sate. Massachusetts Bay is along the northeastern coast of Massachusetts, on the opposite side of Rhode Island, and borders only Massachusetts.
5. What is the name of the old bridge which spanned across the West passage of Narragansett Bay joining Conanicut Island to North Kingston on the mainland of Rhode Island?

Answer: Jamestown Bridge

The (Old) Jamestown Bridge was a cantilever truss bridge (supported on only one end with the cantilever supports projected horizontally) and was first constructed in 1939. The bridge was considered to be unsafe with only two undivided lanes and was slippery when wet.

The bridge was closed in 1992 after the new, replacement Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge was opened. The Old Jamestown Bridge was destroyed in a controlled demolition in April 2006.
6. Rhode Island was originally settled in 1636 by Roger Williams when he got land from the Narragansett and Pequot tribes. Why did he settle in Rhode Island?

Answer: He was forced out of Massachusetts and sought a land of religious freedom

Roger Williams left England and arrived in Boston in 1631. He believed, however, in separatism, freedom of religion and separation of church and state, and he declared that the Church of England was corrupt. After many hearings before the General Court in Boston for "dangerous opinions", he was banished from Massachusetts.

When he got his land in Rhode Island, he had officially founded the first place in modern history where the church and state were separated and there was freedom in religious beliefs.
7. Although Rhode Island is not a road, it has roads and highways too! What is the main Interstate Highway which runs diagonally through Rhode Island from the border with Connecticut and into Massachusetts?

Answer: I-95

The Interstate-95 is the longest north-south highway of the Interstate Highway System and serves the East coast of the United States. It first started in 1957.
8. Rhode Island is not an island, but the state nickname suggests that it could be. What is Rhode Island's nickname?

Answer: The Ocean State

Rhode Island's official nickname is The Ocean State, and it has a second accepted nickname of Little Rhody. It is called the Ocean State since water does account for 14% of the state's total area. The Ocean's Playground is a derivation of the nickname of Nova Scotia: Canada's Ocean Playground. Arcadia of the Atlantic was made up; I derived it from one of Hawaii's nicknames: Paradise of the Pacific.
9. Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island, but Rhode Island wasn't the state's original name. What was the original, more fitting name of the state when it was first settled in 1636?

Answer: Providence Plantations

"Providence" referred to the divine providence (meaning divine guidance or care) and "Plantations" was for the English term for a colony. Now, the state's official name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The area that was settled as Providence Plantations is now the city of Providence. Aquidneck Island is the part of the state that was referred to as Rhode Island, so originally, Rhode Island really was an island!
10. Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island, but it could have been named after an island. Where is the island of Rhodes which lent its name to the small state?

Answer: In the Aegean Sea and belongs to Greece

It has been noted that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano compared Aquidneck Island to the Greek island of Rhodes. It has also been rumored that Rhode Island was named from the Dutch for Red Island, "Roode Eylant" due to the red clay or foliage found on Aquidneck Island.
