8. Which of the following is one of the principal knots used in macrame? It was named by sailors who used it to fasten folded sails.

Answer: Reef knot

Also called a square knot, the reef knot has been in use for at least 4000 years, as there is evidence on ancient Egyptian statues that it was used to secure their belts. The ancient Greeks called the knot a Hercules knot, which has been used for centuries in tying bandages; Pliny said that using the knot made wounds heal faster! But it was the sailors of the 18th century who called it a reef knot and used it when reefing, or making their sails smaller, when the winds were particularly strong. In macramé, a right-handed overhand knot is tied, then a left-handed overhand knot - or vice versa - to make the reef knot.

9. In humid countries, postage stamps with glue on the back tended to stick together before they could be used. What became the most widely-adopted solution to this problem?

Answer: self-adhesive stamps

Self-adhesive stamps were first used in places where tropical humidity created problems with the mucilage on the back of traditional postage stamps: Sierra Leone in February of 1964 and Tonga in April of 1969.Other nations followed, e.g. Great Britain in October of 1993.

The US tried out a self-adhesive stamp in 1974 which did not work out well. The regular issue of US self-adhesives began in 1989. These stamps are coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and then pasted to removable discardable backing paper. Stamp collectors tend not to appreciate self-adhesives because they cannot be easily removed from the envelopes on which they are stuck. Rather than being soluble in water, the new adhesives must be dissolved using Bestine (a heptane solvent), benzine (petroleum ether), or a natural based citrus solvent containing d-limonene (e.g., Pure Citrus Orange).
