Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Earl of Sandwich was created by King Charles II in 1660. Which of his descendants has his name linked with the creation of the sandwich?

Answer: 4th Earl of Sandwich

Sir Edward Montagu was the first Earl of Sandwich. The title was given to Montagu as a reward for his military service. His great-great-great grandson was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The 4th Earl (1718-92) reputedly asked for some meat between two slices of bread so he could keep playing cards.

Other stories suggest he was working and didn't want leave his desk or even that a relative introduced the idea of a sandwich to him.
2. One particular sandwich made of three ingredients (plus bread) is well known by the initial letters of those ingredients. What are the ingredients?

Answer: Bacon, lettuce and tomato

A "BLT" is a classic. I'm not so sure about the broccoli, liver and tamarillo though.
3. A Reuben sandwich is made with what sort of meat?

Answer: Corned beef

Sliced corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and dressing is the filling for a classic Reuben sandwich. If the corned beef is replaced with turkey or other meat it can be called a Rachel sandwich.
4. Peanut butter and marshmallow cream from a jar form the basis of which sandwich?

Answer: Fluffernutter

Other ingredients such as sultanas or a banana can be added to a Fluffernutter if you so desire.
5. A croque-monsieur is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich served in France. Monsieur means "mister" in French but what does "croque" mean?

Answer: Crunch

Toasted ham and cheese doesn't sound that novel but the name has only existed since approximately 1960. There are several versions diverging from the ham and cheese theme such as croque norvégien, made with smoked salmon rather than ham.
6. A "croque-monsieur" can be made into a "croque-madame" by placing what on the top?

Answer: Poached or fried egg

A croque-madame is possibly called that as the egg can remind one of a woman's hat.
7. A ridiculously high, layered sandwich featuring any combination of meats, cheese, salad ingredients and condiments is named after which comic character?

Answer: Dagwood Bumstead

These sandwiches made their first appearance in the "Blondie" comic strip in the 1930s. It doesn't seem to matter what goes into a "Dagwood" as long as it's stacked to the rafters.
8. Beef, bacon, mayonnaise, mozzarella and tomatoes in a bun make a chivito. Which South American country is home to the chivito?

Answer: Uruguay

A chivito is usually eaten accompanied by French fries and possibly a salad.
9. A Francesinha sandwich consists of bread, ham, pork sausage, steak or roast meat. It's then covered with molten cheese. Where did this dish originate?

Answer: Portugal

The name means "little French" in Portuguese. It's served with a hot tomato and beer sauce poured over the top and French fries.
10. A curried potato ball with chutney on a bun is known as a "vada pav". Where did this originate?

Answer: India

This dish originated in the west of India around Mumbai. It's a popular street food available in many places.
