In Greek mythology, Zeus, the king of the gods, had a vast and complex family tree, resulting in a diverse group of offspring. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was the daughter of Zeus in Homer's Greek tradition. Apollo and Artemis, the twin deities of light, music, and the hunt, were born to Zeus and Leto. Ares, the god of war, was a direct son of Zeus and Hera, making him a full-blooded Olympian. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, was uniquely born from Zeus's forehead, without a mother, though she is sometimes considered to have been sired with Metis.
Calliope was one of Zeus's daughters with Mnemosyne (as were all of the Muses) and served as the Muse of epic poetry. Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry, was born to Zeus and Semele. Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship and fire, was either the son of Zeus and Hera or, in some accounts, solely the offspring of Hera. Heracles, the mighty hero famed for his incredible strength, was Zeus's son with the mortal Alcmene. Hermes, the fleet-footed messenger god, was born to Zeus and Maia, a nymph. Persephone, the queen of the underworld, was the result of Zeus's union with Demeter. Perseus, renowned for slaying the Gorgon Medusa, was Zeus's son with Danaë. Terpsichore, another of Zeus's daughters with Mnemosyne, was the Muse of dance and choral singing.
