Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If an Australian offered you a cuppa, how might you respond?

Answer: Graciously accept and say you like sugar in your tea.

If you prefer milk or cream in your tea, then you'd want a white cuppa. If you prefer your tea without milk or cream, then your cuppa would be black. In polite circles, and good restaurants, one is served the tea and allowed to add milk and/or sugar to one's own taste.
2. If you're an Australian wearing your togs, to which of these places would you most likely be going?

Answer: to a beach

If you're wearing your togs, you're wearing your swimsuit. You'd probably be going to the beach. In other parts of the world, togs may be used to refer to other types of clothing, but here in Australia it's definitely for swimming.
3. If you're visiting an Australian museum and your tour guide is now taking you to see the didgeridoo collection, which of these can you anticipate seeing?

Answer: some Aboriginal wind instruments

Didgeridoos are often made from bamboo or from trees that have been hollowed out by termites. The bark is then stripped from the outside, and the craftsman will clean out the inside and seal up any holes or cracks in the wood. Then he will add a mouthpiece, and the didgeridoo will be ready to be played.
4. If you're fossicking in Australia, what are you doing?

Answer: Mining for gold, opals, or some other precious gem.

Fossicking can be a fun family activity. There are many places for you to give it a try. Who knows? You may discover the next priceless gem! Extra tidbit: Whining is often called "whinging" in Australia.
5. If you were an Australian searching for a slippery dip, what would you be searching for?

Answer: a slide

A slippery dip is simply what Australians call a slide.
6. If your Australian friend offered you a cackleberry for breakfast, what might your answer be?

Answer: Sure! I'd prefer my egg scrambled or over easy.

A cackleberry is simply an egg. If you do prefer your egg scrambled, maybe you'd like some tomato sauce (ketchup) for it as well.
7. If you're listening to an Australian weatherman and he says, "It's going to be cold out today; wear your skivvy!", what would you put on?

Answer: your turtleneck

Although you'd might want your hat, coat, and jumper (sweater), too, in this case, the weatherman thinks you need a turtleneck.
8. If you're out with an Australian friend and she warns you to avoid someone because he's crook, what would you understand?

Answer: He's sick.

If someone's crook he's sick. He might want to eat some extra Vegemite. That'll keep him healthy!
9. If you were an Australian wanting to buy a chook, where would you go?

Answer: a grocery store

Chook is chicken. If you were in a hurry and had craving for chicken you could visit Kentucky Fried Chicken. However, if you were hungry for a burger on the run, look for Hungry Jack's (Burger King in the United States) or McDonald's--more familiarly called Macca's.
10. If an Australian says to you, "Look out for that brumby!", what should you do?

Answer: Run. A wild horse is coming your way.

The word brumby has two possible origins. Some have suggested it comes from the Aboriginal word "baroomby" which means "wild." Others think it's more likely that the name for this wild breed of horses came from James Brumby, a British officer who's "domesticated" horses eventually were turned loosed because of their wild behavior. People originally referred to them as "Brumby's horses."
