Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which musketeer came last to join the quartet?

Answer: D'Artagnan

After hurting Athos' shoulder, exposing Porthos' fraud, and embarrassing Aramis, D'Artagnan was challenged to a duel with them. Right when they began to fight, a group of Cardinal's Guards, led by Monsieur de Jussac, came about. Recently, His Eminence had issued an edict against fighting public duels, so that meant the musketeers were under arrest. D'Artagnan helped Athos, Aramis, and Porthos fight off the guards, and they were so impressed that they became his closest friends. D'Artagnan joined their trio, making it a quartet.
2. Which musketeer dreamed of becoming a churchman?

Answer: Aramis

Since the age of nine, Aramis had been studying theology. His dream was to become an Abbe (French for Abbot). Right before he became one, a soldier insulted Aramis. Aramis killed the soldier, and thus forfeited becoming an Abbe. Aramis became a musketeer.

It was always his hope to become a churchman. His lackey, Bazin, also dreamed of being a churchman, or at least serving one. The only reason Bazin agreed to serve Aramis was his intent of becoming a churchman.
3. Which musketeer had an ex-wife named Milady?

Answer: Athos

Athos, before he became a musketeer, fell in love with Milady. Unbeknownst to Athos, she was already married and was branded with a fleur-de-lis (the brand of France). When Athos found out about this, he vowed to never love a woman again.
4. Which musketeer bought a fancy baldric in the beginning of the book?

Answer: Porthos

The front part of the baldric was splendid, with embroidery and gold. The back of the baldric was just plain buff, as Porthos was unable to afford more. Nobody could see the buff; it was covered by a cloak. D'Artagnan ran into Porthos, getting tangled in the cloak, and pulling it off by accident. The buff was exposed and Porthos was ashamed.
5. Which musketeer didn't have a lover in this book?

Answer: Athos

After his horrible experience with Milady, Athos cut women out of his life entirely. However, this vow didn't prevent him from having an illegitimate child in the next book, "Twenty Years After". But that's another story.
6. Which musketeer married Madame Coquenard?

Answer: Porthos

Porthos mostly married her for her dead husband's money. When she died eighteen years after Porthos married her, Porthos inherited lots of money, becoming very, very rich.
7. Which musketeer's mistress was poisoned at the end of the book?

Answer: D'Artagnan's

D'Artagnan's worst enemy was Milady de Winter. Milady tried multiple times to kill D'Artagnan but each attempt failed. She met his mistress, Constance Bonacieux, by chance at the Bethune Convent. Milady poisoned her for revenge on D'Artagnan.
8. Which musketeer had a handkerchief with "C.B." embroidered on it?

Answer: Aramis

A friend of Aramis left the handkerchief at Aramis' house by accident. Aramis took it to give it back to his friend, but D'Artagnan found it on him. This circumstance shamed Aramis, because everyone who was there believed that Camille de Bois-Tracy (that's what C.B. stood for) was his mistress.
9. Which musketeer was given a diamond ring in exchange for helping the queen?

Answer: D'Artagnan

D'Artagnan's mistress, Constance Bonacieux, served the Queen. When she was having a private affair with the Duke of Buckingham, the Queen gave him twelve diamond studs. The Cardinal knew of this, and devised a plan to expose it. He told the King to make sure the Queen wore the studs at the ball.

The Queen obviously wouldn't have them, and she would be forced into telling where they were. Madame Bonacieux asked her lover, D'Artagnan, to go to London and recover the studs. He did so successfully, and the Queen rewarded him with a diamond ring.
10. Which musketeer had a lackey named Grimaud?

Answer: Athos

Athos never allowed Grimaud to talk because it disturbed his peace, or rather, melancholy. Athos always sat in quiet with wine to brood over the past. He didn't like it when his train of thought got disturbed, so his solution: don't let Grimaud talk.
