After his gardener and the gardener's son are both beaten to death by the police in 1976 South Africa, a white teacher tries to bring the responsible men to justice, but loses in court. He then supports a group of black people agitating for change, which alienates his family and makes him a target for the same police officers who killed the gardener.

When his brother's wife's father is taken ill, unemployed Buck Russell is called upon to care for his teenage niece and her younger brother and sister. Buck, as a confirmed bachelor, has difficulty with 15 year old Tia, while the two younger children are bemused by Buck's behavior. Buck rescues Tia from a sleazy guy, earning her respect, and helping her reconcile with her mom.

In 1966 Vietnam, five U.S. soldiers, assigned to a reconnaissance patrol, kidnap a Vietnamese woman from a village. Four of the men rape her, while the fifth man, Private Erickson, refuses. The girl is then murdered during a skirmish with the enemy. Erickson reports the incident, but no officer seems to care, until a chaplain takes Erickson seriously.

The four soldiers are eventually tried and sentenced for the crime. The film is based on a true story.

While recovering at home in Boston, he is promoted to Colonel and given command of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first all-black units in the Union Army. Gaining his men's respect by his fair treatment and support of their rights as men and soldiers, Shaw leads them in an attack on an impregnable fort, where the men exhibit bravery and spirit, gaining respect from their white comrades.

During World War II, American General Leslie Groves (Paul Newman), the man who built the Pentagon, is placed in charge of the project to build an atomic bomb. Plagued by security concerns, personality clashes, and the novelty of the research itself, Groves nevertheless delivers the product in time to end the war.
