Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the queen who traveled to Jerusalem to meet with King Solomon, as per 1 Kings 10:1?

Answer: Queen of Sheba

The visit by the Queen of Sheba is recalled in the 10th chapter of 1 Kings and the 9th chapter of 2 Chronicles. Scripture reports she arrived in Jerusalem with "a very great caravan" carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones. Scripture also reports she was "overwhelmed" with Solomon's wisdom and his immense wealth. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Sheba was located in southwestern Arabia, present-day Yemen.
2. What was the name of the queen who was deposed by the man known in the NIV Bible as King Xerxes?

Answer: Queen Vashti

Vashti is the correct answer but not much is known about her. King Xerxes (whom other translations name as Ahasuerus) is the one who deposed Queen Vashti and replaced her with Esther. Vashti fell out of favor very quickly after she spurned the king's request to put on her crown and appear before a gathering of people and nobles so they could see her immense beauty. According to Esther 1:1, Xerxes ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.

The dumping of Vashti took place during the third year of his reign, as per Esther 1:3.

It would put things in motion for Esther to become queen and play a pivotal role in preventing the extermination of Jews in the immense area ruled by Xerxes. Of course, when Xerxes appointed Esther queen, he did not know she was a Jew.
3. Hadassah was a beautiful young Jewish girl who became a queen. What was her name?

Answer: Queen Esther

Queen Esther played a key role in saving the Jewish people from mass genocide in a diabolical scheme spearheaded by Haman, according to the book of Esther. Hadassah is the original name of Queen Esther, as per Esther 2:7. The passage in the NIV Bible states: "Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother.

This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died." Esther, of course, would go on to play a key role in preventing the extermination of the Jews in the vast area ruled by the king known as Xerxes in the NIV Bible.
4. Acts 8:26-40 tells of Philip converting the Ethiopian eunuch to Christianity, making him the first believer in Africa in a resurrected Jesus Christ. According to the NKJV Bible, what was the name of the monarch the eunuch worked for?

Answer: Queen Candace

Queen Candace is the correct answer. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, "Candace was the traditional title of the queen mother, responsible for performing the secular duties of the reigning king, who was thought to be too sacred for such activities."
5. Quartus was an early Roman convert to Christianity and a friend and assistant of Paul.

Answer: True

True. However, not much is known about Quartus as he mentioned in only Romans 16:23. The passage, in the NIV Bible, states: "Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings. Erastus, who is the city's director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings." Romans 16 is largely devoted to greetings from Paul and it is seen by many today as a tribute to "Joe" and "Jane" Christians in the early church.
6. Q is for Queen. The following verse contains the word 'Queen' and is found in Matthew 12:42 and Luke 11:31 in the NIV Bible: "The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here." Who is the speaker?

Answer: Jesus

The correct answer is Jesus. To understand what is being said, we need to look at verse 41: "The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here."

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state 'Nineveh' and 'Queen of the South' represent "Gentiles who came to faith because of the words of God's prophets and kings, lesser people than Jesus Christ, God's only Son."
7. Q is for Quail. In what book in the Old Testament do you generally associate reading about the Israelites eating manna and quail while spending 40 years in the desert?

Answer: Exodus

Exodus, of course is the correct answer with the first reference to manna and quail appearing in the 16th chapter. The chapter tells of the LORD providing the Israelites with quail in the evening and manna in the morning. There is also reference to manna and quail in the 11th chapter of Numbers.

Other references to manna can be found in the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy, the fifth chapter of Joshua as well as Nehemiah 9:20 and Psalm 78:24.
8. Q is for Quiver. The following verses contain the word 'quiver' and are from Psalm 127:4-5 in the NIV Bible: "Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court." In this instance, what does quiver mean?

Answer: A container for arrows.

In this instance quiver refers to a container for arrows. The Scripture verse in question is from Psalm 127:4-5. Notes in the NKJV study Bible offer this observation: "In ancient times, having many children was regarded as a symbol of strength. This was particularly true in an agricultural economy, since the extra hands of children increased the productivity of the farmer.

A full quiver was a mark of God's blessing. The blessing of a home in ancient times gave a person a measure of pride in the community."
9. Q is for Quench. The following verse from the NIV Bible contains the word 'quench': "Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one's house for love, it would be utterly scorned." In what book in the Old Testament do you find this passage?

Answer: Song of Solomon

The passage in question is from Song of Solomon 8:7. Consisting of 117 verses, Song of Solomon is one of the shortest books in the Bible. Wikipedia offers this perspective about the book: "In spite of the lack of explicitly religious content, the Song is often interpreted as an allegorical representation of the relationship of God and Israel, or for Christians, God and the Church or Christ and the human soul, as husband and wife."
Wikipedia reports the book is also known as Song of Songs, Solomon's Song of Songs, or as Canticles. It is also known as Âisma in the Septuagint.
10. Q is for Quiet. In what Gospel would you find these verses, that contain the word 'quiet': "Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, 'Teacher, rebuke your disciples!' 'I tell you,' he replied, 'if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.' As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it."

Answer: Luke

The statement is found in Luke 19:39-41. The words were spoken by Jesus during the events leading up to his crucifixion. According to Scripture, Jesus had a triumphant entry into Jerusalem with crowds of people laying palm leaves in front of him and saying "Hosanna." Within a few days, however, things would change dramatically. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, he was betrayed, arrested and crucified only to rise from the dead again.
