Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of the following nations are you likely to find the greatest concentration of adherents of the Coptic Church?

Answer: Egypt

The Copts are an ethnoreligious group, which means that they're a group of people brought together by their religious and ethnic backgrounds. The Copts are indigenous to the north of Africa and are mainly centred around Egypt and Sudan. Most of them belong to the Orthodox Coptic Church and they would represent the largest Christian denomination, not just in Egypt but within the Middle East. Estimating the percentage that the Christian Copts make up of the Egyptian population has proven to be difficult, and the figures quoted are usually painted with a brush as wide as "between five and twenty percent".

However, it is generally accepted that they make up the largest minority religion in the country.

2. Whose election is announced to the world by 'fumata bianca'?

Answer: The Pope

The vote to elect a new Pope is taken by the College of Cardinals in conclave in the Sistine Chapel. When the vote is inconclusive, the Cardinals burn the ballots with a chemical to produce black smoke (fumata nera) visible to those outside. But when a vote actually produces a new Pope, the chemicals to produce white smoke (fumata bianca) are added.

3. Literally meaning "good news", what is the collective name for the Biblical books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John?

Answer: Gospels

The first three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, are often called synoptic gospels because they have similar, but not identical, information about the life of Jesus. The Gospel of John doesn't tell as much about the life of Jesus as it reports many things Jesus said.

4. Adult Muslims have to pray five times a day, which is a part of the five pillars of Islam. Which direction do all Muslims face in prayer?

Answer: Toward Mecca

Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is considered the holiest city in Islam. Muslims have to travel to Mecca in the annual Hajj pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

5. A novena is a spiritual devotion which continues successively for how long?

Answer: nine days

A novena is a devotion of prayers prayed on nine successive days (or, occasionally, nine weeks). The object of these prayers may be a particular grace or favour, an intercession, or the remission of particular sins. Such prayers may be accompanied by an offering of a candle, of incense, or of flowers.

The term "novena" derives from the Latin word for nine. Novenas are most commonly prayed by Roman Catholics, but also by Eastern Orthodox, Anglicans (Episcopalians) and Lutherans.

6. This Biblical man was a shepherd, lute-player and king. He had a son called Absalom. What was his name?

Answer: David

David was the second king of Israel, a warrior, musician and poet, as related in the Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles. He is considered important in Judaism and Christianity as well as in Islam. According to Biblical tradition, the Messiah will be a direct descendant of David. For Muslims he is a prophet.

7. Much smaller and more delicate than the giant bells which ring in the church tower of Western churches, what are the tiny bells rung by an acolyte during the consecration of the eucharistic elements?

Answer: sanctus bells

Since about the 13th century in the Western Church, sanctus bells have been used to alert the faithful in the congregation to the solemn work of consecration occurring at the altar. These bells are also called sacring bells, mass bells, sance bells, saints' bells and Sacryn bells.

In Shakespeare's "Henry VIII" (Act III, scene 2), the Earl of Surrey says to Cardinal Wolsey "I'll startle you Worse than the scaring bell." They are modernly used in the Roman Catholic, Anglican (Episcopal) and some Lutheran churches. An argument against their use is that they were first employed when members of a congregation paid little or no attention to what was going on in the front of the church for most of the time, until the bells called them to what was considered the more important part.

Modern worshipers are perhaps a bit more continuously participatory.

8. Which Queen is directly connected with the Jewish Feast of Purim?

Answer: Queen Esther

Queen Esther endangered her own life to save the Jews from the genocide that was planned for them by the evil Haman, adviser to the King of Persia. This victory for the Jews is celebrated every year as 'Purim'. In the Hebrew Bible, this story is told in the Book of Esther.

9. A standard non-orthodox Jewish prayer-book contains prayers in Hebrew and English. But there will always be at least one prayer in another language; which?

Answer: Aramaic

The Kaddish or prayer for the dead is in Aramaic, a language that predates Hebrew. Aramaic was the spoken language in what is now Israel, and Jesus spoke a variant of it.

10. In Acts 15:31 (Good News Bible), a group of believers were 'filled with joy by the message of encouragement.' What had they received?

Answer: A letter from the apostles

In Acts 15, the apostles and church elders heard stories about groups of Gentiles who had come to believe in Jesus. In verse 20, James suggested that they should write a letter to the new church to tell them about the Law of Moses, something that was well known among Jewish believers. Paul and Barnabas took some men to Antioch to deliver the letter and to support them in their new faith.
