All Silver Tea Cups Trivia Quiz

To acquire each of these silver cups would make for a very expensive tea service. Mind you, I don't think that tea is typically the beverage of choice to drink from these cups.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which fancy silver cup has been presented to the winner of the British Open since 1872?

Answer: The Claret Jug

Tom Morris, Jr. (also known as Young Tom Morris) had won The Open three years in a row (1868-70), earning the Championship Belt to keep. The powers-that-be elected to make a new trophy, and at a cost of Ł30, 'The Golf Champion Trophy' (The Claret Jug) was made. Young Tom Morris won The Open again in 1871 (at the age of 21), but The Claret Jug was not ready to be presented.

When it finally was in 1872, it was presented to Tom Kidd, although Morris did have his name already inscribed on the trophy.
2. This silver cup was donated in 1892 by Canada's Governor-General to the country's top-ranking amateur hockey club. Originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, by what name is it known today?

Answer: The Stanley Cup

Lord (Frederick) Stanley of Preston was Canada's Governor-General from 1888 to 1893. With two sons actively playing hockey, Lord Stanley also became a fan of the sport, donating the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup for the purpose of contesting Canada's best amateur hockey club. By 1909, however, it became the prize of professional hockey teams exclusively.

In 1926, it became the top prize of (exclusively) the National Hockey League.
3. The Borg-Warner Trophy is actually a (really) big silver cup with a lid sporting a naked man waving a checkered flag. For which racing championship is it awarded?

Answer: The Indianapolis 500

The Borg-Warner Trophy is named for the automotive components and part supplier BorgWarner, Inc. It has been presented at the winner's circle of every Indianapolis 500 since 1936. The trophy is huge, measuring just shy of five feet tall. Along the outside of the trophy can be found bas-relief likenesses of every winner of the Indianapolis 500 since the race began in 1911.
4. Four of the five Wimbledon (tennis) champions are presented silver cups at the end of the annual tournament. Which of these receives a silver salver instead?

Answer: Ladies' Singles

The missing Wimbledon championship title from the list of five is the Mixed Doubles. Each of the three sets of Doubles winners receives a silver trophy for their efforts (along with the cash prize), while the Gentlemen's Singles trophy is silver gilt, with enough gold on the trophy to make it seem more gold than silver.

The Ladies' Singles champion, however, receives a large silver plate, or salver, instead of a cup. The large sterling-silver serving plate has been presented since 1886, and is also known as the 'Rosewater Dish'.
5. While highly coveted, the FIFA World Cup Trophy is not a silver cup. Which of these FIFA regional championships *does* present a silver cup to their best national football (soccer) team?

Answer: UEFA (Europe)

FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is divided into six regions around the world, with each region having their own championship competition apart from the World Cup, which is done every four years. UEFA (Europe) is actually joined by CONMEBOL (South America) and AFC (Asia) as regions that have a silver cup to present to their regional national champions.

CONCACAF (North & Central America & The Caribbean) contest for 'The Gold Cup', while both OFC (Oceania) and CAF (Africa) have trophies that are not actually cups.
6. The ICC Cricket World Cup competition presented different trophies over the years, depending on who was sponsoring the event. In 1999, a permanent trophy was established that sadly, does not fit the 'silver cup' theme of this quiz. Were any of the preceding four preceding trophies actually silver cups?

Answer: Yes

Originally, the ICC Cricket World Cup had a big silver cup to award by the name of The Prudential Cup (1975, 1979, 1983), but since then the cup designs have either not been silver, or not been 'cups'. For the competition held in 1987 it was a gold cup (The Reliance Cup), then in 1992 it was a crystal cup (The Benson & Hedges World Cup), and then a complicated looking silver trophy for the 1996 competition. Finally in 1999 a permanent trophy was adopted (not a cup), and it is simply called The ICC World Cup Trophy.

It looks like a globe supported by three curved silver arms, as well as a center multicolored column between the base and the globe.
7. It's called the Grey Cup, but it really is silver. For which Canadian league sport is it awarded?

Answer: Football

Of course, the 'Grey' in the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup isn't a reference to a colour at all, but rather refers to the (yes, another) Governor General who commissioned it - the (Albert) Earl Grey. The first Grey Cup game was held On December 4th, 1909 between the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the Parkdale Canoe Club.
8. The beautiful silver FIA Trophy, presented annually to the Formula One World Drivers' Champion, was won by the same man five years in a row from 2000 to 2004. Who was it?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) has awarded The Formula One World Drivers' Championship every year since Italian Nino Farini first won it in 1950. Germany's Michael Schumacher has won it SEVEN times in total, with wins in 1994 and 1995 in addition to the five-year streak mentioned in the question.
9. A large three-sided silver vase is presented to the winner of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. Which of these races is NOT one of the three that make up the Triple Crown?

Answer: Epsom Derby

The gorgeous three-sided trophy was commissioned in 1950 by the Thoroughbred Racing Association to recognize the horse and rider who has won ALL three races. While the current trophy itself has only been around since 1950, the Triple Crown has been around much longer.

The first winner was 'Sir Barton' and jockey John Loftus in 1919. By the end of the 20th century, only 11 horses have managed to win the coveted award, with the last being 'Affirmed' in 1978, with jockey Steve Cauthen.
10. The Commissioner's Trophy for the winner of the World Series (first awarded in 1967) is a beautiful silver gilt cup with two handles and a lid sporting a figure of a batter striking a ball.

Answer: False

In actuality, the Commissioner's Trophy is a beautiful construction made of flagpoles and pennants enough for every team in the National League and American League. They form an upright circle with the back side higher than the front. This rendition of the World Series prize was first presented to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967 (they beat Boston).

The trophy did not actually receive its current name until 1985, and prior to that 'The World Series Trophy' WAS a silver cup!
