Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The drama of the gymnastics at the 2012 games kicked off early, with the failure of the American women's favourite to qualify for the all around final. What was this gymnast's name?

Answer: Jordyn Wieber

Jordyn Wieber was arguably the favourite of the American squad, and possibly the world, to go on to win the women's all around title at these Olympic games. However, despite finishing fourth overall in the qualifiers, Jordyn failed to progress to the final due to the rule that only two gymnasts from each nation are allowed to qualify (with Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman finishing in positions 2 and 3 respectively).

This rule came under much criticism afterwards, with some arguing that it should be the top gymnasts who qualify, irrespective of which nation they represent.
2. Next, it was the turn of the men's team event. Gold went to China and, for the first time in over 100 years, the British men's team was awarded a medal. Originally the medal was silver, but this was later changed to bronze. What was the reason for this decision?

Answer: An appeal from the Japanese team

Emotions were mixed at the end of the men's team event. The medal positions looked secured, with Britain in the bronze position as Japan's top gymnast Kohei Uchimura took to the pommel horse. Happiness turned to ecstasy as the low score for Uchimura bumped Team GB into second place.

However, it appeared that the judges had not credited Uchimura with a dismount from the pommel horse. Although messy, and worthy of a small deduction Uchimura's dismount should have counted since his feet hit the floor first.

The revised score then allowed Japan to leap from 4th to 2nd position, bumping Great Britain to 3rd and relegating the Ukrainian team out of the medals.
3. While Japan's Uchimura took gold in the men's all around final, Gabby Douglas took gold in the women's all around. Douglas became a crowd favourite in London following her modern and energetic routines. What is her nickname?

Answer: The Flying Squirrel

Although Jordyn Wieber had been the dominant name in the years leading up to the London Olympics and the holder of several national and international titles, Gabby Douglas had been lurking quietly in the background. Douglas actually scored higher than Wieber in the AT&T American Cup all around finals in 2012, but was not officially entered into the competition and so her scores did not count.
4. Next up was the men's pommel horse final, and an event in which Britain's Louis Smith specialised. More drama unfolded when Louis was awarded the same score as Hungary's Krisztián Berki, but was awarded the silver medal. What was the reason for this?

Answer: Berki had a higher score for execution

Louis Smith was styled as the leader of the successful British men's gymnastics team and was the most experienced gymnast on the team, taking bronze in the 2008 Beijing games.

Gymnasts are awarded two scores - one for difficulty and one for execution, which are added to give a total. When two gymnasts have the same total score, as was the case in the pommel horse final, the competitor with the higher execution score comes out on top. In the rare event that gymnasts score the same for both their difficulty and their execution, the lowest counting scores from the judges are eliminated and a new average score is calculated. This occurred in the 2008 Beijing games when He Kexin and Nastia Liukin went head to head on the uneven bars. The lowest counting score for He Kexin was 8.9, whereas Liukin's was 9.0. The remaining average score for He Kexin (9.1. 9.1, 9.0) was higher than Liukin's (9.1, 9.0, 9.0), and so He Kexin won gold.
5. On the same day as the men's pommel horse final, the women's vault final also took place. Followers of this event thought the final had been decided before it even began, with some saying that the gold was more secure than the 100m gold was for Usain Bolt. What was the name of the out and out favourite for this event, who fell on her second vault, placing her in silver medal position?

Answer: McKayla Maroney

McKayla had consistently impressed spectators and judges alike with the height she generated from the springboard, despite not being as stocky as some of her opponents. The "natural talent" of Maroney led BBC commentator Christine Still to remark that McKayla was the best vaulter she'd ever seen.

However, following an impressive first vault, McKayla failed to stay on her feet on her second landing, allowing Romania's Sandra Izbasa to take gold. McKayla's disappointed face on the podium led to numerous "McKayla Maroney is not impressed" internet memes following the event.
6. In the final for the men's rings, the spotlight surely went to Yordan Yovchev, who represented Bulgaria. Why was Yovchev's performance in the 2012 Olympic games particularly noteworthy?

Answer: They were his sixth Olympic games

Six Olympic games are not unheard of from competitors in the equestrian events, but this longevity in the sport of gymnastics is impressive indeed. Although being a triple bronze Olympic medallist and winning a silver the rings event at Athens, Yovchev finished 7th in the London Olympic rings final, though he did succeed in winning the admiration of commentators and spectators.
7. This next gymnastics final saw the 2008 Beijing champion fail to retain her Olympic title and Team GB's Beth Tweddle win an Olympic medal, which had eluded her in previous games. Which event was this?

Answer: Uneven bars

At the relatively advanced age of 27, Beth Tweddle surprised her fans (and even her parents) by continuing her training with the intention of competing in the London 2012 Olympic games, which she did! Beth had specialised in the uneven bars from a young age and had won numerous world and European golds in the event, but had always come up short in the Olympic games.

In 2012, she won bronze in front of a cheering home crowd.
8. The men's horizontal bar was perhaps the most thrilling of the event finals, with several huge scores and the feeling that the competition was never quite over. After an apparently unbeatable score by German star Fabian Hambuchen, Epke Zonderland performed a routine which was welcomed by rapturous applause and which won his nation a rare gold in gymnastics. Which country did he represent?

Answer: The Netherlands

Zonderland's performance was deemed worthy of the huge score of 16.533, earning him the only individual Olympic medal ever to be awarded to a gymnast from the Netherlands.

Hambuchen was also a crowd favourite during these games. He had been performing at a high level since a very young age and has several world and European titles to his name. The silver he earned in London was added to the bronze he won in Beijing in the same event.
9. The female performance of the London 2012 Olympic games surely goes to Aliya Mustafina, who appeared to mesmerise the audience in her performances, taking home 4 Olympic medals in the process. This all came after a return from serious injury. Which country did Mustafina represent?

Answer: The Russian Federation

Although tearful upon hearing that she and her teammates had "only" been awarded silver in the team final, Mustafina will surely look back on her medal with pride. Mustafina also won bronzes in the individual all around and the floor exercise, and gold in the uneven bars final.
10. In the men's gymnastics, one nation stole the show, winning 3 gold and taking podium positions in 5 of the 8 events. Which nation was this?

Answer: China

The disciplined Chinese men's team recovered from a disappointing start in the qualifying rounds, but they performed when it counted and took gold in the team final, floor and parallel bars. Further medals were won in the rings (silver) and the horizontal bar (bronze).

These impressive performances added to the gold and 2 silvers won by the Chinese women meant that the Chinese topped the medal tally chart overall.
