Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was Martin Brundle born?

Answer: 1959

On June 1st, 1959, Martin was born in the town of King's Lynn, Norfolk, England. Martin and his wife Liz had a son, Alex, and a daughter, Charlotte, together. Alex Brundle (born August 7th, 1990) also went on to become a racing driver.
2. In 1971, Martin began racing, though not in karting like many former Formula One drivers did. Which motorsport did he start off in?

Answer: Grass track racing

In a small village close to King's Lynn lies the village of Pott Row. Back in the day, it was a popular place to go and watch cars racing around the chalk racing surface of the oval track. As far as I can remember, the track closed in the late 1970s or the early 1980s. If you go to Google Satellite and type in Pott Row, you can still see the outline of the track, even after all these years since it closed.
3. Martin moved to another kind of motorsport in 1975. What form of motorsport was the next challenge for Martin?

Answer: Hot Rod racing

Martin moved to the hot rod racing scene. Within four years, Martin received 'star grade' status. A fantastic achievement in a short space of time. By the end of 1979, Martin had moved to another formula in motorsport.

In 1979, Martin got his first drive in a single-seater racecar. Martin took part in the Formula Ford 2000 championship. Martin finished the season with one win and several top-three places. In the same year, Martin also asked Tom Walkinshaw if he could have a drive in one of his BMW racing cars. Out of the blue, Walkinshaw got in contact with Martin and gave him a drive in one of his cars. After a brilliant performance, Martin finished second in the race, beating a quality field of international drivers. Tom Walkinshaw was the owner of "Tom Walkinshaw Racing," and an ex-touring car racer.
4. Martin moved to Formula Three in 1982. How many race wins did Martin achieve in his debut season?

Answer: Two

Martin drove for for Dave Price Racing in a Ralt-Volkswagen RT3 in his debut season in Formula 3. He got off to a terrific start, winning at Oulton Park in September and Thruxton in October. Over the season, he also secured pole six times and scored 60 points to finish fourth in the driver's championship during his rookie season.

In 1982, Martin was also named the most promising Commonwealth driver and received the Grovewood Award.
5. In the 1983 F3 championship, who did Martin drive for?

Answer: Eddie Jordan Racing

Martin raced for Eddie Jordan Racing, driving a Toyota-powered Ralt chassis. Eddie formed the team in 1980, which went on later to become an F1 racing team under the name Jordan Grand Prix. In 1983, Martin had a battle with Ayrton Senna, who raced for West Surrey Racing. Mechanically, they both had the same engine and chassis, so it was down to the driver and the set-up of the car.

At the end of the season, Ayrton won the championship with 132 points against Martin's 123 points. Senna won 12 of the 20 races, and Martin won seven races, but was deducted points at the Silverstone Circuit for using the wrong tyres.
6. What team did Martin drive for in his first year as a Formula One driver?

Answer: Tyrrell Racing Organisation

Martin joined the Tyrrell team in 1984. In his very first race, Martin crossed the finish line in a respectable fifth position. In the next race at Detroit, Martin drove brilliantly to move into second place; however, it was short-lived. Soon after the Detroit race, the FIA discovered lead balls used as ballast and pollutants in the Tyrrell water injection system. Since the water had been filled with some fuel throughout the race, it was thought to be against the rules, which at the time forbade refuelling.

This combination with the loose ballast caused Tyrrell to be disqualified from the 1984 championship and rendered all previous results void.
7. After a few years of driving with uncompetitive cars and a break from Formula One, who did Martin drive for in 1989?

Answer: Brabham

1989 was a poor season for Brabham, with Martin only scoring four points. At the end of the season, Martin decided to leave Brabham and return to the world of sports cars for the 1990 season. At the Le Mans 24-hour race, Martin, driving for Tom Walkinshaw Racing, won the race with teammates John Nielsen from Denmark and Price Cobb from the United States. The trio won by five laps, driving their Jaguar XJR-12LM, 7.0L V12.

1991 saw Martin back at Brabham for another season; however, it was a disaster, with only two points scored. This would be the last time Martin would drive for Brabham.
8. 1992 was Martin's most successful Formula One season. Who did he drive for?

Answer: Benetton-Ford

It was a great year for Martin, scoring 38 world championship points, five podiums, and finishing sixth in the championship. Nigel Mansell won the championship with 108 points against Riccardo Patrese's 56. Michael Schumacher finished the season in third place with 53 points.

A few years passed with Martin driving for other teams, some with good results. 1996 would be Martin's last year as a F1 driver. Martin's teammate for his final season was Brazilian racing driver Rubens Barrichello. It was not one of the best seasons for Martin; however, he did score eight world championship points, with Rubens scoring 14 points.

It was a mixed career for Martin in Formula 1. Had Martin been on the right team at the right time, I'm pretty sure he would have won races and scored a lot more points. Still, he had a successful career as a racing driver in all types of motorsports.
9. In what year did Martin Bundle become a commentator for ITV F1?

Answer: 1997

After joining ITV in 1997, when they started covering Formula One, Brundle rose to prominence as a pundit on the British television network ITV F1, first with Murray Walker and then, starting in 2002, with James Allen. Martin was the voice of F1 between 1997 and 2008.

In 2009, Brundle and Jonathan Legard joined the BBC's F1 commentary team after the broadcasters regained the rights to broadcast Formula One. The BBC announced before the 2011 season that David Coulthard, another former Formula One racer, would be joining Brundle, who was promoted to chief pundit. Martin remained at the BBC until the end of 2011.

Jonathan Legard was the lead commentator for the BBC's Formula One TV coverage in 2009 and 2010.
10. In 2011, Brundle joined the Sky F1 commentary team and returned to a co-commentary role. Who was the lead commentator?

Answer: David Croft

In addition to his co-commentary role, Martin also provides analysis and reporting on practice, qualifying, and races. His pre-race grid walks have become famous among F1 fans all over the world. As a testament to his popularity, Brundle has received the RTS Television Sports Award for best sports pundit in 1998, 1999, 2005, and 2006.

David Michael Croft, also known as Crofty, is a British television broadcaster who works for Sky Sports. Since 2012, he has served as Sky's chief commentator for the Formula One series.
