Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Last of Us" begins in 1968 with an epidemiologist describing what type of infection as the most severe as it can devour the host from within?

Answer: Fungal

The series begins in 1968 with an epidemiologist describing how humanity adapts and creates cures for bacterial and viral infections. However, fungal infections are different in that antibiotics often don't cure them and they can withstand decomposition. Even so, the doctor states that fungi can't survive in hosts with a temperature over 94°F.
2. After the intro the show jumps to the year 2003. After discovering they are out of pancake mix, what food does Sarah make her father Joel for his 36th birthday?

Answer: Eggs

Sarah is certainly more excited for her father's birthday than he is. She wants to make Joel pancakes but when she checks their cupboard she discovers they are out of pancake mix. Instead, Sarah gives him scrambled eggs and orange juice for breakfast before he goes to work.

As they part ways, Joel tells Sarah he'll be home by 9:00 so they can celebrate more. As will be discovered later on, the decision to not eat foods with flour was critical for Joel's survival.
3. What timely item does Sarah get fixed for her father Joel as a birthday present?

Answer: Watch

Sarah goes through Joel's drawer and finds cash and a knife in there. She takes $20 and after school goes to Lone Star Watch & Jewelry. While there the owner replaces the spring in Joel's watch. Twenty years later, Ellie would comment to Joel that the watch that Sarah had fixed for him in 2003 wasn't working.
4. What DVD that sounds like two fighter planes does Sarah borrow from her neighbor to watch with Joel the night of his birthday?

Answer: Curtis & Viper 2

Sarah looks through the DVDs at the neighbor's house and picks "Curtis & Viper 2" to watch with her father. In "The Last of Us 2" video game, it is described that the "Curtis & Viper" movies have two former commandos that go rogue and fight bad guys.

In the pilot episode of the show, Joel gets home late on his birthday but he watches "Curtis & Viper 2" because Sarah enjoys the movie series too.
5. Why does Joel have to leave his house late on his birthday to get his brother Tommy?

Answer: He has to bail Tommy out of jail.

Tommy calls Joel late at night and asks Joel to bail him out of Travis County Jail. Tommy explains to Joel that he got into a fight with a guy that was acting deranged and attacked a woman.
6. Sarah runs out of her neighbor's house when she sees Mrs. Adler devouring her husband and caretaker. How does Joel subdue the infected Mrs. Adler?

Answer: Wrench

Tommy and Joel arrive just in time to see Sarah running out of Mrs. Adler's house. The infection Mrs. Adler has prompts her to try and devour any sentient being around her. Joel grabs a wrench out of Tommy's truck and smacks the infected Mrs. Adler in the head to knock her down. Sarah, Joel and Tommy then try to drive away as the Austin, Texas area has gotten chaotic.
7. Tragically, Joel's daughter Sarah dies in his arms. What is the cause of her death?

Answer: She is shot by a soldier of the U.S. Army.

When they try and flee town via the highway there is a roadblock prompting Tommy, Sarah and Joel to go on foot. After Tommy gets separated from them, Sarah hurts her ankle. Joel has to carry her and a soldier of the U.S. Army shoots an infected that was chasing them.

The soldier then tells his superior that there are two uninfected humans with him. His superior tells him to shoot Joel and Sarah and tragically Sarah is shot in the stomach region and she eventually dies. Before the soldier can shoot Joel, Tommy arrives and kills the soldier.
8. In 2023, Joel lives in a quarantine zone in what formerly large city of the eastern USA?

Answer: Boston

Twenty years after the death of his daughter, Joel lives in the quarantine zone of Boston. The quarantine zone has work and shelter but it is heavily regulated by a government agency called FEDRA that imposes curfews and rations.
9. What is the name of the underground resistance group that opposes FEDRA and recruits members by telling them "when you're in the darkness, look for the light"?

Answer: Fireflies

Depending on who you ask, the Fireflies are either a noble resistance group or a group creating chaos unnecessarily. Their tactics involve blowing up FEDRA supplies and smuggling people and items outside the quarantine zone.
10. Joel and his friend Tess do business with a man named Robert. What had they intended to buy from Robert but never received from him?

Answer: Truck battery

The first time we see Tess she is tied up by Robert's men after a 'misunderstanding'. She is eventually released and when she gets back to Joel they plot how they will take Robert out. Tess and Joel had paid Robert to get a truck battery for them, presumably to try and get out of the quarantine zone. Eventually they discover that the truck battery Robert was going to give them was non-functional.
11. What is the name of the leader of the resistance group who asks Joel and Tess to transport Ellie out of the quarantine zone?

Answer: Marlene

Marlene is the leader of the Boston chapter of the Fireflies. Joel and Tess are familiar with her in spite of not being members of the Fireflies resistance group. Marlene offers Joel and Tess cash to transport Ellie to another stronghold of the Fireflies.

Merle Dandridge played the part of Marlene in the tv adaptation of "The Last of Us" as well as voicing the character in the first two video games of the series.
12. After Ellie escapes from a FEDRA Military School she takes on an alias. What does she tell people her name is?

Answer: Veronica

Years prior Marlene had put Ellie in the FEDRA Military School after her parents died. Ellie found that the school was trying to brainwash them so she escaped. She is eventually found by members of the Fireflies who take her to their leader, Marlene. Ellie tells them that her name is Veronica to hide her true identity.

However, Marlene has known Ellie since she was young and tells her that she is being immobilized because she has a bite mark on her arm.
13. Ellie is special in that she was been bitten on her arm by an infected three weeks ago and she still hasn't turned. How long does it usually take those bitten on the arm to become infected and homicidal?

Answer: Within 24 hours

There is a chart shown that based on where someone is bitten it shows different times to become infected and homicidal. The extremities typically take the longest time to turn but even bites on the arms and legs have just a 24 hour time for the bitten to become infected. Marlene believes that Ellie's blood must be special since she did not become infected and she wants Ellie to be analyzed to hopefully provide a cure for humanity.
14. Bill and Frank transmit codes to Joel via the radio. How does Joel know if they have new goods or if there is trouble?

Answer: The decade of the song

When Ellie is brought back to Joel's place she notices that he has a book of Billboard hits that are sorted by decade. Joel falls asleep and asks Ellie if any song had played on the radio. After she tells him that "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (1984) played, Joel immediately tells her and Tess that they have to leave.

The smuggling code for the songs was that a 1960s song meant 'nothing in', a 1970s song meant 'new stock' and a 1980s song meant 'trouble'.
15. What actor, known for playing the title character in the TV series "The Mandalorian" played the part of Joel Miller on "The Last of Us"?

Answer: Pedro Pascal

Pedro Pascal was born with the name José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal in Santiago, Chile in 1975. After Augusto Pinochet came to power in Chile, Pascal's family fled and they eventually ended up in California, USA. Some of his first big roles were as Oberyn Martell on season four of "Game of Thrones" and as Javier Peña on "Narcos".

After Pascal was hired to play the character of Joel on "The Last of Us", he watched his nephew play the video game to familiarize himself with the source material.
