Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Secret of Monkey Island": Our swashbuckling hero protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood, wants to be a... what?

Answer: Pirate

After arriving on Melee Island, Guybrush declares that he'd like to seek his fortune and visits the SCUMM bar to see the three important looking pirate leaders to see what he needs to do to be acknowledged as a pirate. It turns out that the answer to becoming a pirate is mastering the three skills: thievery, sword mastery, and treasure huntery (or "the quest").
2. "Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge": Told retrospectively, LeChuck's Revenge begins with Guybrush being marooned on Scabb Island. Who is preventing people from leaving the island?

Answer: Largo LaGrande

"Wherever you go, on sea or on land, you'll never hide from Largo LaGrande!"

The first chapter of the game, fittingly called "The Largo Embargo", concerns the fact that Largo has everybody terrified and under his control, and is preventing people from leaving the island (although Captain Dread also has other problems preventing him from letting you charter his ship: he's lost his lucky sailing necklace). Apparently the only solution to the Largo problem is to create a voodoo doll of him...
3. "The Curse of Monkey Island": There's something different about the iteration of insult swordfighting in this game from the previous two titles. What is it?

Answer: It has to rhyme

This time, the insult sword fighting all takes place on a ship out at sea. It turns out that there are special rules for these specific circumstances: at sea, all insults must not only make sense, but also rhyme. This leads to some fun dialogue options where Guybrush can say some completely non-sensical insult responses: but at least they rhyme!
4. "Escape From Monkey Island": After recruiting the owner for our crew, Guybrush returns from adventuring to Melee Island and... "Something horrible has happened to the SCUMM Bar!" What is it?

Answer: It has become a family-friendly tourist attraction

Unfortunately, Guybrush having taken Mr. Cheese as his new ship navigator prevented him from being able to carry on resisting Ozzie Mandrill's hostile takeover attempts. This led to the SCUMM Bar being taken over and re-branded as The LUA Bar, a very friendly location for tourists, but not so for pirates.

The LUA Bar was known to serve sushi and to deliver all of its food orders through a conveyor belt system, another big change from the previous very low-tech SCUMM Bar.
5. "Sam & Max Hit the Road": What are Sam and Max tasked with investigating by the carnival?

Answer: The disappearance of Bruno the bigfoot and Trixie the giraffe-necked-girl

The carnival are very unhappy with losing their star attractions, but it turns out that Bruno and Trixie are in love and that Trixie is actually the one who helped Bruno to escape. They simply wish for freedom rather than being viewed as freaks at a carnival, which doesn't seem like too much to ask, although the solution is rather complicated...
6. "Maniac Mansion": Dr. Fred the mad scientist is an antagonist in this game, although he's less actively antagonistic (although still hostile!) in his appearance in the sequel. Who or what has enslaved Dr Fred and the other Edisons?

Answer: A sentient meteor

The fall of this meteor occurred decades before the time frame of the game, but the sentient meteor has been affecting their behaviour ever since. Without this influence, the Edisons had no particular interest in kidnapping people to experiment on.

Fun fact about "Maniac Mansion": the game is entirely playable within its own sequel, "Day of the Tentacle", via accessing a computer. This ability even remains intact in the Remastered versions!
7. "Day of the Tentacle": What is the primary objective in this game?

Answer: Turning off the Sludge-O-Matic machine in the past

"Our only hope now is to turn off my Sludge-O-Matic machine and prevent the toxic mutagen from ever entering the river."
"Isn't it a little late for that, Doctor?"
"Of course! That's why I'll have to do it... yesterday! To the time machine!"

One of the playable characters from Maniac Mansion, Bernard, returns in this one with his two friends, and after Bernard answers a distress call from green tentacle, he goes to free him. He also frees purple tentacle, however, completely forgetting the reason that they were both imprisoned is due to purple tentacle consuming toxic waste, growing arms and becoming an insane genius who inevitably takes over the world. Dr Fred feels that the only way to undo this is to prevent it happening in the first place, and since it's all clearly the fault of Bernard and his friends, they're the ones who are going to have to time travel and fix the mess they've made. Things aren't so simple, however, and they end up stranded split in the future and past, while Bernard tries to help retrieve his friends to the present.
8. "Grim Fandango": At the beginning of the game, Manny describes his job as being a travel agent. Based on his clothing, a player would more accurately describe his job as... what?

Answer: A grim reaper

Manny is a skeleton in the Land of the Dead wearing black robes, he artificially increases his height to look more intimidating and he often wields his trademark scythe, which always travels with him no matter what other job Manny is parading around as at the time. He's considered a travel agent due to selling travel packages to enable a soul to speed along on their journey of the soul, supposed to be based on karma from life, before they reach their final destination.

Selling these packages is a lucrative business, although Manny seems to be doing so as some sort of community service. However, in the real world (resembling a collage of bizarre magazine cutouts) Manny really does use his scythe to open body bags and reap the souls of the newly dead.
9. Many of the earlier LucasArts adventure games used the same in-house game engine: the SCUMM engine, named after the game for which it was created. SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac...what?

Answer: Mansion

There are various nods to the engine throughout the games, mostly obviously being the SCUMM Bar which is a prominent location in the "Monkey Island" games. "Escape From Monkey Island" used the in-house Grim engine, which originated with "Grim Fandango" - the renaming of the SCUMM Bar to the LUA bar was a nod to this, given that the Grim engine used Lua as its programming language.
10. What adventure game sequel did LucasArts cancel, which ultimately led to the creation of Telltale Games (who would pick up this IP as soon as LucasArts lost the rights)?

Answer: Sam and Max: Freelance Police

It was the last real adventure game of this style that LucasArts would develop, with the following statement having a tone of finality about it even at the time: "After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC." Even though LucasArts adventure games were generally excellently regarded as a whole, it was clear that they were felt to be less marketable compared to other ventures.

Telltale Games would go on to produce three episodic seasons of "Sam and Max" games, in point-and-click style (unlike some of the newer LucasArts adventure games that had required keyboard control). Sam and Max also made appearances in some other Telltale games, such as "Poker Night" and "Poker Night 2".
