Path of a Champion is a mode in which players could select a championship and then play a series of matches in an attempt to win it. Each championship win came with an unlocked wrestler. When a player won the WWF Tag Team Titles in Path of a Champion, Stacy Keibler was unlocked.

Stacy Keibler worked for WCW under the name Miss Hancock between 1999 and 2001, when the company was bought by WWF. Her run in WWF, then WWE, lasted until her departure in 2006. She was inducted into WWE's Hall of Fame in 2023. She was also a former cheerleader for the Baltimore Ravens.

At the real "WrestleMania X8" Pay Per View, Keibler accompanied the Dudley Boyz to their match.

Vince McMahon, the long-time chairman of WWF/WWE, is considered a special character and therefore is not immediately available to players. To unlock Vince, you must win the WWF Intercontinental Championship in Path of a Champion mode. Mr. McMahon had several in-ring achievements in addition to his many accomplishments as WWE's head executive: he won the 1999 Royal Rumble and once held the WWF and ECW Championships.

Answer: WWF Light Heavyweight Championship

The WWF Light Heavyweight Championship dates back to 1981, while WCW's version of the belt was created in 1991. Following WWF's acquisition of WCW, the light heavyweight division was rebranded and the championship became known as the Cruiserweight Championship. Raven, who wrestled with both promotions, held the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship in 1992, which might be the reason why his character in the game is unlocked upon winning the similarly-named title.

The Hurricane appears in the game as part of a tag team with Mighty Molly. Just like in real life, his finishing move in the game is the Eye Of The Hurricane, a modified elbow drop. The Hurricane did have another finishing move called the Hurrichokeslam, but it was not his main one. The Hurricane also competed in WWE as Hurricane Helms and under his real name, Gregory Helms. Some of his accomplishments included winning the WWE Cruiserweight Championship and the World Tag Team Championship.

At the real "WrestleMania X8" Pay Per View, the Hurricane won the WWF Hardcore Championship even though he wasn't originally booked to participate in the event.

Answer: The Dudley Boyz

The Dudley Boyz are brought to the ring by Stacy Keibler when she is unlocked in Path of a Champion. The fact that they are the default champions is likely because Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley held the WWF World Tag Team Championships between November 2001 and January 2002. While the game was released in June 2002, the developers probably used the current champions at the time they were working on the game. The championship changed hands on the January 7, 2002 episode of "Raw" when The Dudley Boyz were defeated by Spike Dudley and Tazz.

At the real "WrestleMania X8" Pay Per View, the Dudleys failed to win the tag team titles from Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo.

Answer: Rhyno

Rhyno's career is closely associated with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). Notably, he was the final ECW World Heavyweight Champion and ECW World Television Champion before the company was acquired by WWF. While at WWF, Rhyno won the Hardcore Championship three times, which likely explains why winning this belt unlocks his character in the game.

Answer: Ric Flair

Ric Flair is often regarded as one of the most important figures in professional wrestling's history. Nicknamed "the Nature Boy" for most of his career, Flair became known for his cheating antics in the ring, and as a member of the Four Horsemen stable. Flair won multiple championships (the number is usually acknowledged as 16, but there is conflicting information) in each major promotion where he competed between the 1980s and 2008. Interestingly, Flair never held the WWF European Championship which unlocks his character in the game.

At the real "WrestleMania X8" Pay Per View, Flair lost his match against The Undertaker.

Answer: Chris Benoit

In the game, Benoit's pectorals looked significantly bigger than in real life, which is not surprising since the game was criticized for its animation when it first came out. Chris Benoit's career in WWE saw him win the World Heavyweight Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, and the United States Championship, among others. Benoit died in 2007, in what police said was a double murder of his wife and son followed by him committing suicide.

Benoit's only reign with the World Heavyweight title began in 2004, years after this game was released.

Rob Van Dam was one of the superstars that are available immediately for players to choose in the game. Other wrestlers that players could pick included Christian, William Regal, Big Show, Rikishi, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall. On the player selection screen, the last row of superstars was mostly comprised of question marks, which would later become additional unlocked wrestlers through winning titles in Path of a Champion.

The original cover of the GameCube edition in the U.S. featured Rob Van Dam and Hulk Hogan, with Stone Cold Steve Austin in between the two. The Rock also took the place of Austin as the star of the cover in the U.S. because he left the company shortly after the game was made available for sale.

Answer: Kofi Kingston

The "WWE WrestleMania X8" video game included many beloved wrestlers, such as Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Booker T, The Undertaker, Triple H, and many more. However, Kofi Kingston did not appear in the game because he was not yet a part of WWE. Kingston first appeared on WWE television in 2008 wrestling on the ECW brand. Eleven years later, he became the WWE Champion by beating Daniel Bryan at "WrestleMania 35".
