Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a Porteņo. In which South American city do I live?

Answer: Buenos Aires, Argentina

The residents of Buenos Aires refer to themselves as "Porteņos/as", meaning "People of the Port". This name is used because of Buenos Aires' main port called Puerto Medero.
2. I am a Chilango. Which city am I from?

Answer: Mexico City, Mexico

People from Mexico City often refer to themselves by this name with great pride. The term does not refer to the city itself. Some say it stems from the spicy hot sauces the people adore and for which they are famous, the taquera sauce. Another theory is that it comes from the Nahuatl word "chilan-co", meaning "where the red ones are from".
3. I am a "Hoosier". Which US state do I call home?

Answer: Indiana

Though no one really knows what a "Hoosier" is or what it may mean. There are many etymologies of the word "Hoosier" dating back to the early 1820s and 1830s, some include followers "Black Harry" Hoosier, a Preacher in the State during the times of American Slavery; a John Finley poem titled "Hoosier's Nest"; the word is also mentioned in an article in the Indianapolis Journal titled "Carrier's Address".

The term came to common use by the people of Indiana by the 1840s.
4. If I am from Brittany, France, what is my demonym?

Answer: Breton

"Breton" is the French form for "Briton", though in France, the territory of Brittany or "Little Britain" was once occupied by Celtic Tribes until the late 14th century.
5. I am "Bajan", which Island am I from?

Answer: Barbados

The word Barbados means "bearded ones", given to the Island by the Portuguese in the early 1500s. "Bajan" comes from the English when they took over the colony in the 1630s and shorted the demonym from the word "Barbadian".
6. I am a "Loiner", from which city in England do I hail?

Answer: Leeds

Leeds comes from the Latin word "Loidis", an early 5th Century settlement in England. It became anglo-sized to "Loiner" in early Middle-English, times unknown.
7. I am "Malagasy", so which country do I call home?

Answer: Madagascar

"Malagasy" comes from a mistake and very bad pronunciation by the famous explorer Marco Polo, when he arrived on the island of Madagascar in the 13th Century thinking he landed at the Somalian Port of Mogadishu, by the 1500s the mistaken name was very popular with the explorers from Europe and it stuck.
8. I am a "Nutmegger". Which New England State in the USA do I live in?

Answer: Connecticut

Though the true origin is unknown, the legend states that in the mid-1800s that people from Connecticut started to become suspicious of peddlers selling nutmeg in the natural and unfamiliar seed form, instead of the prepared spice form with which they were familiar.

They thus became convinced that they were being ripped off, because they found it very hard to grind into the familiar spice form. They referred to these peddlers as "Nutmeggers".
9. I am "Dutch", where is my home?

Answer: Netherlands (Holland)

The word "Dutch" has origins going back to Proto-Germanic, the origin of all Germanic Languages, but when used in the English Language, the demonym "Dutch" is first used by the Anglo-Saxons to refer to all Germanic Speakers in Europe. It is not until later that demonym refer to only people of the Netherlands or Holland as "Dutch" and the people of Germany, or Deutschland, as "Deutsch".
