Missing Chris Farley

2. How many movies did he star in with David Spade?

From Quiz Missing Chris Farley

Answer: Two

Chris and David starred in "Tommy Boy" (1995) and "Black Sheep" (1996). "Tommy Boy" was a movie about Thomas Callahan III (Chris) who was known as a hard partier and not that bright. After Tommy graduated from University, he went back home to work for his dad at an auto parts plant. Tommy and Richard (David Spade) had to go cross country to sell brake pads after Tommy's dad's death. Hilarity ensued! "Black Sheep" rejoined Farley and Spade, but it was not as funny as "Tommy Boy". In this movie, Chris played the dumb brother of Al Donnelly (Tim Matheson) who was running for governor. It was Steve Dodds (David Spade) who had to keep Mike (Chris Farley) away from the election.

3. Where did Chris attend college?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Marquette University

Chris attended Marquette University, which is located in Wisconsin, and graduated in 1986. While there he studied Theater and Communications and played rugby union. It was while at university that Chris discovered his love of comedy. After graduating he worked with his dad for a bit and studied improv at the Ark Improv Theatre in Madison.

4. Chris made his way to what city and attended The Second City?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Chicago

After learning improv under Dennis Kern at Ark Improv, Chris moved to Chicago. While there, he first performed at a theater and training center called Improv Olympic. He then joined Second City Theater, starting the same day as Stephen Colbert. Chris was a part of the touring group and was promoted to their main stage in 1989. A year later he would join the cast of "Saturday Night Live."

5. What was the name of the character Chris played on "Saturday Night Live" who lived in a van down by the river?

From Quiz Missing Chris Farley

Answer: Matt Foley

Matt Foley was a motivation speaker who was probably one of the worst speakers you could imagine. He was 35 years old, divorced three times and lived in a van down by the river. He was quite abrasive, overly sweaty and clumsy. He would often throw himself onto furniture and break it. He was very successful but for the wrong reasons. He would be quickly moved out of his meetings by the organizers, leaving his audience huddled close together and frightened. They decided to listen to what Matt had to say because they did not want to be like him. Thomas Callahan was the name of Chris Farley's character in "Tommy Boy" (1995). Mike Donnelly was the name of Chris Farley's character in "Black Sheep" (1996). Bennett Brauer was a character who frequented the "Weekend Update".

6. Farley and a number of other "Saturday Night Live" cast members had a nickname that described their behaviour while on the show. What was it?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Bad Boys of SNL

Chris joined the cast at "Saturday Night Live" in 1990 along with Chris Rock. He was a cast member at the same time as Adam Sandler, David Spade, Tim Meadows, and Rob Schneider, and it was this group that earned the nickname and for good reason. The tamest of their antics included prank calls and mooning cars, and Farley was apparently known for getting naked and acting like the serial killer from the movie "Silence of the Lambs." He was fired from the show in 1995, along with Adam Sandler.

7. Chris was part of Bill Swerski's Superfans on the show "Saturday Night Live" from 1991 to 1997. What was the name of the city that they primarily cheered for in football and basketball?

From Quiz Missing Chris Farley

Answer: Chicago

Bill Swerski's Superfans comprised of Joe Montegna (as Bill Swerski) with Chris Farley (as Todd O'Connor), Mike Myers or John Goodman (as Pat Arnold) and Robert Smigel (as Carl Wollarski). George Wendt appeared as Bob Swerski, explaining that his brother Bill had another heart attack. Each member wore dark sunglasses and had a moustache, which made them look like their hero, Mike Ditka. When asked who would win the Superbowl, the answer was "Da Bears". They would gather in a bar drinking beer and eating Polish sausages while bantering about "Da Bears".

8. Farley's "Saturday Night Live" character, motivational speaker Matt Foley, was "living in a van..." but where?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Down by the river

One of his most famous characters was motivational speaker Matt Foley, who was originally created by Bob Odenkirk when he was at Second City with Chris. Chris brought Foley to life in a great big over the top way, reminding everyone that he "lived in a van down by the river." Other famous characters while Chris was on the show were Chicago native Todd O'Connor (famous for saying "da Bears"), a "Gap Girl" and a wannabe Chippendale dancer who famously competed against Patrick Swayze in a dance competition.

The movie was about Beldar, Prymatt and Connie Conehead trying to fit in as earthlings and not doing very well. "Wayne's World" (1993) was Chris's movie debut. This movie was about Wayne and Garth trying to promote their public access cable show. Chris was an unnamed security guard. Chris was an unnamed bus driver in "Billy Madison" (1995). This movie was about a slacker who had to go back to school and finish every grade in 24 weeks in order to take over his father's company. Chris did not appear in "Little Nicky" (2000) as it came out several years after his death.

From Quiz Missing Chris Farley

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: All That

Chris was in the music video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Soul to Squeeze". The band dedicated a line in the song "Purple Stain" to him after he died. He was also a guest on the Nickelodeon show "All That" in 1997, along with fellow "Saturday Night Live" performer Kenan Thompson. On the show, Chris was visibly struggling, wheezing, and having difficulty with the physical comedy for which he was well known.

12. Sadly, Chris passed away at the young age of 33. What caused his death?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Drug overdose

Sadly, Chris suffered from drug and alcohol abuse for most of his adult life, and this took its toll. Professionally, he was suspended more than once from "Saturday Night Live" because of his addiction. His health suffered because of this addiction, and through 1997, the final year of his life, his health visibly declined. He passed away on December 18, 1997, at the age of 33. He was found by his brother at his home in Chicago, having died from an overdose of a combination of morphine and cocaine. A funeral was held on December 23, 1997, for Chris in Wisconsin, which was attended by over five hundred people, including many fellow comedians and actors who had worked with him on "Saturday Night Live." A notable absence was his good friend David Spade, who said it was just too difficult for him to attend. His remains are buried at Resurrection Cemetery, which is located in Wisconsin.

13. At the time of his death in 1997, Chris lived next door to what talk show host?

From Quiz Missing Chris Farley

Answer: Jerry Springer

Chris lived next to Jerry Springer of "The Jerry Springer Show" at the time of his death. Jerry's show had been on the air since 1991 and NBC picked up this "trash television" show through the 2009-2010 season. "The Jenny Jones Show" (1991-2003) starred Jenny Jones. This show used shock value to try and gain viewers. Sally Jessy Raphael also had her own show "Sally Jessy Raphael" later called "Sally". This show ran from 1983-2002. "The Tempestt Bledsoe Show" ran from 1995 to 1996.

14. Chris had a number of projects on the go when he tragically passed away. He was originally cast as the voice of the title character of what film?

From Quiz Chris Farley

Answer: Shrek

When Chris passed away, he was in the process of doing the voice recordings for the movie "Shrek." He was between 85% and 95% finished when he tragically died. The film-makers did not want to finish the film without him and decided to re-record everything using the voice of Mike Myers. Chris was set to be the voice of another animated film called "Dinosaur" and he was in talks to do a movie with Vince Vaughn called "The Gelfin", to appear in the third installment of "Ghostbusters", and to play the title role of "Captain Underpants." He was also in talks to star in a movie about Fatty Arbuckle, and here's where things get interesting. The making of a movie about Arbuckle is said to be cursed because not only Farley, but also John Candy and John Belushi, were interested in playing this part. All three of the comedians passed away before the films could be made.
