Woodward Avenue was established in 1815 by Native Americans as their primary transportation path (it was known as the Saginaw Trail then) and was converted to a plank road in the 1820's for use by wagons. In 1909, the mile between 6 Mile Road and 7 Mile Road became the first mile of concrete-paved road in the world for use by the automobile.
