Answer: Sir Don Bradman

Sir Don Bradman died at the age of 92. He is considered Australia's greatest cricketer and sportsman. The family had a private funeral at the request of Sir Don. A public memorial service was held in Adelaide.

Vivian Solon was mistakenly believed to be an illegal immigrant in the Phillipines. She was deported from NSW in 2001 and taken to a Catholic hospice in the Philippines. In her home state of Queensland, the police thought she was a missing person. The police contacted the Immigration Department, but senior officers did not provide information of her whereabouts. It was not until 2005 that she was found. A goverment inquiry was held about this case and it found that the Immigration Department needed a systemic overhaul to ensure the Department acted on real evidence rather than assumptions.

In 2001, Allan Langer played for the Warrington Wolves in England. He received a request from the Queensland coach to play in the third and deciding State of Origin match. Queensland won the match 40-14 and the series 2-1. Allan Langer scored a try in the match.

Wollongong Wolves defeated South Melbourne 2-1 in the Grand Final. The National Soccer League folded after 2003/2004 season and a national competition was relaunched as the A-League. The Wollongong Wolves did not become a team in the A-League and instead played in the NSW Premier League. In 2008, the Wollongong Wolves became premiers but with financial losses the club had to fold in the following year. Scott Chipperfield and Sasho Petrovski are two of the Wolves players who played for the Socceroos.

Dr Peter Hollingworth worked for many years as an Anglican priest who served with the Brotherhood of St Laurence for 25 years. He served as Archbishop of Brisbane for 11 years. In 1992, Dr Peter Hollingworth was awarded the Australian of the Year. He was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001 as Governor General after receiving his nomination from the Prime Minister. In 2003, allegations emerged out that he did not do enough to investigate sexual abuse cases when he was Archbishop and he was forced to resign in May 2003.

Clare Martin became the first female Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. Her victory brought the end of the Country Liberal Party rule in the Northern Territory and the first time the Australian Labour Party ruled this territory. Clare Martin resigned in November 2007. She was not happy with the Federal Government's intervention in aboriginal communities.

MV Tampa was a Norwegian ship that picked up 438 Afghan asylum seekers who were on the way to Australia. When Tampa entered Australian territorial waters at Christmas Island, Australia sent troops and took control of the ship, to prevent the refugees from coming ashore. Most of the refugees were transported to the Pacific island of Nauru and held in detention camps until their cases were assessed. The arrival of the Tampa in Australian waters was misrepresented by the Federal Government to the public as a threat to national sovereignty. John Howard used the Tampa affair in the 2001 Election campaign with the following statement, "We decide who comes into this country and the circumstances in which they come."

Ansett had been a domestic airline until 1987 when it started making flights to New Zealand. Services to China, Malaysia and Taiwan were added in the 1990s. In 2000 Air New Zealand acquired full ownership of Ansett. This became unsustainable as Ansett was a bigger airline but less profitable. Ansett had an ageing airline fleet and competition from new airlines in the Australian market led to further problems for Ansett. On 12 September 2001, Ansett was placed into voluntary administration.

"Sale of the Century" was a quiz show that was intially hosted by Tony Barber in 1980 and Glen Ridge from 1991. Segments in the show included "Gift Shop", "Fame Game" and "Fast Money". The show was revived from 2005 with the new title of "Temptation".
