Jeffery Deaver's "Twisted"

A Note On The Info Section: At first I give a summary of the plot. Meanwhile, the man she is going to meet is killing a woman.... SPOILER: What we learn only later is that this man, Dale O'Banion, is a hitman, hired by Marissa to kill Jonathan, who is cheating on his wife all the time. We think that she is finally going out again, and then we find out that she's dating a murderer.

Jack and his partner, Toth, are gangsters who rob a gas station, kill a man, and take another man hostage - Mr. Weller, the Weekender. Toth dies, and Jack and Weller spend hours talking to each other. And Weller seems to succeed in talking Jack into letting him go.... SPOILER: Unfortunately, what Weller really wants is revenge, because the man who was killed was his friend. Bad thing for Jack that Weller knows his greatest fear.... TWISTED: Deaver makes us think that Jack and Weller are really getting along very well, almost becoming friends, and we all think that Jack will probably let Weller go, and Weller in turn will not give Jack away.

From Quiz The Bone Collector

And Patsy's 11 million dollars are a good motive for him to do so.... Harry promises her to keep silent if she pays his huge bill that reads, "For services rendered: $ 10 million." From Quiz The Bone Collector

Answer: JFK

Sellitto said, 'Man and woman coming back from business on the Coast. Got into a Yellow Cab at JFK. Never made it home.'

25. Near the beginning of the book, Lon Sellitto gets a saying wrong, sparking off a running gag throughout the book when Lincoln calls out, "Cliché alarm, Lon" whenever he's going to use an idiom. What does Lon say?

From Quiz Jeffery Deaver's The Twelfth Card

Answer: "Either rains or it pours"

" 'Either rains or it pours,' Sellitto said. He frowned. 'I don't quite get that expression.' - 'Believe that's "Never rains but it pours." A statement of irony.'...." Lincoln goes on to change the topic, but he reminds Lon of this little conversation whenever he comes up with another idiom.

26. "Beautiful": Kari Swanson, the supermodel who is being stalked by a man named David Dale, has made a decision: "One of us had to die..."

From Quiz Jeffery Deaver's "Twisted"

Answer: "... and I picked me."

Kari Swanson is a model, and she has repeatedly been described as "The most beautiful woman on earth." But she is not happy, for a man called David Dale has been stalking her for months. So one day, Kari takes matters into her own hands: we see her meet a man whom she pays a lot of money; then she calls Dale and makes an appointment. When the police officers hear of this, they think Kari might want to kill Dale, so they follow them - and are just in time to see Dale collapse to the ground, evidently in great pain.... SPOILER: Instead of shooting the stalker, Kari undergoes plastic surgery (the surgeon was the man she paid). She treats her flawless, beautiful face for a plainer one. When Dale sees her like this, he is absolutely thunderstruck, and then he starts howling and whining and whimpering. Kari, however, can start a new life without the burden of her dazzling beauty. TWISTED: Deaver makes us think, of course, that Kari is going to hire a hitman to kill Dale, and later that she herself kills Dale. But in fact, it is Kari Swanson the supermodel who is killed in this story. "One of us had to die, and I picked me."

27. Lincoln Rhyme calls a well-known character from another Deaver novel for help. Whom?

From Quiz Jeffery Deaver's "The Vanished Man"

Answer: Parker Kincaid ("The Devil's Teardrop")

A nice little extra for Deaver regulars.... Some of you may remember that there was a similar scene in "The Devil's Teardrop," where Parker calls Lincoln to ask him a question. Here, Lincoln needs Parker's help to explain how a signature made in sight of the guard at the door could disappear without a trace. Parker tells him that the killer "Ex-laxed" the signature, using disappearing ink.

28. What is the name of Lincoln's long-suffering male nurse?

From Quiz Basic Facts of Lincoln Rhyme

Answer: Thom

Rhyme is often rude to Thom, but their relationship is based on affection. Thom is an all-round carer for Rhyme.
