Sherlock Holmes Mixture Trivia Questions

1. What is the address of the accommodation that Holmes and Watson share?

From Quiz
A Lemon Tree, My Dear Watson!

Answer: 221B Baker Street

Arthur Conan Doyle chose a non-existent number in Baker Street as Holmes' address, but in the 1930s the street numbering changed and 221 became the address of the Abbey Road Building Society. Bags of mail were delivered to them from fans who presumably didn't realise Holmes is fictional. They employed a secretary to reply to the mail, mostly saying that Holmes has retired and can no longer take cases. In 2002, Abbey National moved from the Baker Street premises, and Sherlock's fan mail is now delivered to the Sherlock Holmes Museum nearby.

2. In which story does Holmes seek refuge in Dr. Watson's house after having escaped three murder attempts?

From Quiz Sherlock Holmes: The Ultimate Detective 3

Answer: The Final Problem

In this story, Professor Moriarty, the criminal mastermind of London and Holmes' nemesis, is introduced. At the very end of the story, Holmes fakes his death, causing much grief and strife to Watson.

3. How many times does Holmes make the celebrated remark,"Elementary, my dear Watson"?

From Quiz Sherlock Holmes: The Ultimate Detective 2

Answer: Zero

Holmes never said that! He used frequently the world "Elementary" and the phrase "my dear Watson", but only separately.

4. Where does Holmes keep his tobacco?

From Quiz Sherlock Holmes: The Ultimate Detective

Answer: In a Persian slipper

Yes, Holmes keep his tobacco here! Watson comments on it in the "Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual". According to him, it's one of Holmes' oddest habits.

5. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet" is a rich source of Watson backstory. For instance, from what institution did Dr. Watson receive his "Doctor of Medicine" degree in 1878, just a few years before meeting Sherlock Holmes?

From Quiz Elementary Watson: Have You Met the Good Doctor?

Answer: The University of London

Watson tells us so in the very first sentence of the very first Holmes and Watson adventure reported, the novel "A Study in Scarlet". That 1878 graduation date is extremely helpful to Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts. Along with the date of one of Holmes's first solo cases, it allows them to conclude that both Holmes and Watson were active young men when they met, Watson probably between 28 and 31 and a couple of years older than Holmes. Conan Doyle himself studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

6. What was Moriarty's first name?

From Quiz Professor Moriarty

Answer: James

During a conversation with Watson recounted in "The Adventure of the Empty House", Holmes refers to "Professor James Moriarty". This is the only occasion on which his first name is mentioned.

7. In 'The Adventure of the Red-Headed League', what was the reason for tricking Jabez Wilson?

From Quiz This is What Happened...

9. "And when he speaks of Irene Adler, or when he refers to her photograph, it is always under the honourable title of the woman." Which Holmes story ends like this?

From Quiz The Lasts of Holmes

Answer: A Scandal in Bohemia

This story came out in 1891, the first short story to be published in 'The Strand Magazine' after the two novels - 'A Study in Scarlet' and 'The Sign of the Four'. So by that time, Holmes had already acquired a formidable reputation, both in his world and ours. More than a century later, it still holds its charm. It is indeed ironic that the very first Holmes story Doyle published was his (Holmes's) failure, at least in his own eyes, but the client was well satisfied so no complaints there!

10. The story features the disappearance of a race horse. The famous 'curious incident of the dog in the night time' is a key plot point in this novel. Can you identify the name of the story?

From Quiz Sherlock Holmes Plots and Titles

Answer: The Adventure of Silver Blaze

'The Adventure of Silver Blaze' (published 1892-1893) is featured in the short story collection 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes'. The story features the kidnapping of a prize horse Silver Blaze and the murder of its trainer John Straker. During the investigation, we come across a very famous dialogue when the Yard detective Gregory asks Holmes if he would like to point out any unusual incident. Holmes points out 'the curious incident of the dog in the night time'. When Gregory replies that the dog did nothing; Holmes says that was the curious incident. The dog did not do anything because its master was the person who stole the horse and the horse killed Straker to protect itself. Holmes later recovers the horse and presents it back to the owner in a highly dramatic way.

11. "To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman."

From Quiz The Firsts of Holmes

Answer: A Scandal in Bohemia

This case is remarkable for many reasons. It is the first Sherlock Holmes story written by Doyle. The client was from a royal family. It's one of the few cases in which Holmes wishes he had brought the "business to a more successful conclusion". It was "entirely free of any legal crime". And most important, it drastically changed Holmes's opinion about the cleverness of the fair sex. 'The woman' is none other than Irene Adler.

12. Who brought to attention the affairs of the League of Red-Headed Men?

From Quiz Match the Client to the Case

Answer: Jabez Wilson

17. In "The Blue Carbuncle", how is Holmes able to tell from Henry Baker's hat that his wife does not love him anymore?

From Quiz The Art of Observation and Deduction

Answer: The hat is very dusty

"When I see you, my dear Watson, with a weeks' accumulation of dust upon your hat, and when your wife allows you to go out in such a state, I shall fear that you also have been unfortunate enough to lose your wife's affection."

18. In "The Empty House" what disguise does Sherlock Holmes adopt when he follows Watson back to his study in Kensington?

From Quiz "The Return of Sherlock Holmes"

Answer: He has assumed the identity of an elderly deformed book-collector.

Watson is completely taken in by Holmes' disguise. He even bumps into the disguised Holmes and apologises for the books that he has knocked down. Holmes' strange "croaking voice" is not recognised even when he speaks directly to his old friend. When Holmes reveals himself Watson faints for the first and only time in his life.

In "The Hound of the Baskervilles", Sherlock Holmes sends Watson to live at Baskerville Hall along with Sir Henry Baskerville.
