Answer: Edward R. Murrow

Murrow gained early fame for his radio reports from London during World War II. Actor David Strathairn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the legendary reporter.

2. Senator Joseph McCarthy was exploiting the "Red Scare" of the early 1950s by accusing people of being Communists with little or no evidence. What U.S. state did McCarthy represent in the Senate?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: Wisconsin

The junior Senator from Wisconsin was in danger of losing his congressional seat in 1950, and took up tracking down suspected communists and communist sympathizers as a means of getting publicity and ensuring his re-election.

3. In one scene, I told Mr. Murrow that Dr. Stanton wanted to have a drink with him. Who played me?

From Quiz Who Played Me in "Good Night, and Good Luck"

Answer: Alex Borstein

Borstein landed the role of Natalie in "Good Night, and Good Luck". Natalie was an assistant for Mr. Murrow and his co-workers. There was one scene when Eddie Scott asked Natalie to help set up a microphone for a television broadcast and she told him the microphone was already set. Natalie then mentioned to Edward after he wrapped up a broadcast that she needed him to sign something. Natalie also stated that a person named Dr. Stanton wanted to have a drink with him so Edward asked her when this request was made. She replied that it was made just a short while ago, as Dr. Stanton was at the Pentagon Bar. Edward told Natalie to tell Dr. Stanton that he could not meet him for drinks, which she did. Borstein guest starred on the TV series "Gilmore Girls", "Friends" and "Frasier".

4. Who was Milo Radulovich?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: Air Force officer

Lieutenant Radulovich was discharged from the service after his father and sister were labeled as communist sympathizers.

5. What was the name of the CBS News program that began its attack on McCarthyism on October 20, 1953?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: See It Now

Murrow closed his program about the Air Force's dismissal of an officer because of alleged communist activities of his father with the comment, "the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, even though that iniquity be proved beyond all doubt, which in this case it was not." Lieutenant Radulovich was later reinstated.

6. Joe told me that showing images of Senator McCarthy did not present an argument against his methods of locating communists. Who played me?

From Quiz Who Played Me in "Good Night, and Good Luck"

Answer: Patricia Clarkson

Clarkson, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, played Shirley Wershba. Shirley was seen once applying lipstick in the bathroom when Joe spoke to her about Senator McCarthy. He told Shirley that just showing images of what Senator McCarthy did was not so convincing and that the real issue was how to broadcast a piece about him. Joe mentioned to Shirley that people who loved Senator McCarthy likely would hate the piece while people who hated him probably would enjoy it. Shirley suggested he wait until more footage could be shown about Senator McCarthy before crafting pieces but Joe said the best way to approach it was to hit Senator McCarthy before he went after Edward R. Murrow. Clarkson guest starred on the TV shows "Six Feet Under", "Frasier" and "Law and Order".

7. CBS news reporter Don Hollenbeck was viciously attacked by McCarthy and conservative newspaper columnists about his alleged communist sympathies. How did Hollenbeck deal with the situation?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: He committed suicide

Murrow's friend and colleague died by his own hand by turning on the gas on his kitchen stove. Hollenbeck was played by actor Ray Wise.

8. What was CBS employees Shirley and Joe's big secret?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: They were married

Joe and Shirley Wershba were in violation of CBS's strict rule against employees being married. When they were later confronted by a superior, he advised them that he knew, and that everyone knew that they were married. Joe and Shirley were played by actors Robert Downey, Jr. and Patricia Clarkson.

9. In the movie, what famous entertainer was interviewed on the CBS program "Person to Person"?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: Liberace

Murrow obviously much preferred his hard-news program "See It Now" to the fluff "Person to Person". Oddly, he asked the openly gay Liberace when he was going to settle down, get married and raise a family.

10. Fred told me once that the CBS lawyers wanted to talk with me. Who played me?

From Quiz Who Played Me in "Good Night, and Good Luck"

Answer: Thomas McCarthy

McCarthy was cast as Palmer Williams in "Good Night, and Good Luck". Palmer worked for CBS and it was midway through the movie when Fred told him that the CBS lawyers wanted to speak with him. Palmer asked him when they planned to talk to him so Fred said they were hoping to do it tomorrow. Fred encouraged Palmer not to get paranoid as the lawyers were talking to everybody. When Palmer asked Fred to give him some suggestions as to how to talk to the lawyers, Fred simply advised him to tell them what he knew. Palmer was seen in one scene watching footage of people testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee. McCarthy played guest starring characters on the TV series "Law and Order", "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and "New York Undercover".

11. Who was Fred Friendly?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: News producer

Friendly, portrayed by George Clooney, who also directed and co-wrote the film, was Murrow's program producer and biggest supporter. A scene at the end of the movie depicts Murrow and Friendly being reassigned to an hour-long Sunday evening news program, an early precursor to "Sixty Minutes".

12. Senator Joseph McCarthy's downfall began when he accused what organization of being infiltrated with communists?

From Quiz Good Night, and Good Luck.

Answer: U.S. Army

McCarthy's reckless and unsubstantiated charges that the United States Army was rife with communists drew counter-attacks from President Eisenhower on down. He was investigated by the U.S. Senate and censured. He passed away shortly thereafter.
