Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Trivia Questions

1. Who wrote the screenplay for this magnificent film?

From Quiz
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman also wrote the screenplays for 'Being John Malkovich', 'Adaptation', 'Human Nature', and 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind'. Michel Gondry was the director for both this film and 'Human Nature'. Donald Kaufman was the fictitious twin brother of Charlie, made up for the story of 'Adaptation', although some believe him to be real. David Koepp had nothing to do with this picture, but he's a good writer too.

2. What is the one of the main taglines for this film?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: "You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story."

"You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story." was the one that mainly advertised the movie. Although, "This spring, clear your mind." was another that was popular.

3. Along with a great writer/director team, this movie had a very impressive cast. Who, among the the following, did NOT play a character in the movie?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Jon Brion

Jon Brion was actually the one who provided the original score for the film. He's also done music for 'I Heart Huckabees', 'Punch-Drunk Love' and 'Magnolia'. Mark Ruffalo played Stan, one of the geeks sent to perform the memory erasure procedure on Joel. Tom Wilkinson played Dr. Howard Mierzwiak, and David Cross (a great comic actor) was Joel's friend Rob, who told him about Lacuna (the place that does the memory erasures).

4. There are two songs used in the trailer of this movie. Which are they?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: "A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics" and "Mr. Blue Sky"

"A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics" is from James Horner and "Mr. Blue Sky" is from Electric Light Orchestra.

5. Joel recalls the night that he and Clementine had their big fight; she leaves in a huff and he follows in his car (which she scraped along a fire hydrant). He inevitably pursues her down the street on foot but can't catch up to her. Why is this?

From Quiz Mise-en-scène of the Spotless Mind

Answer: His memory cuts out; he runs down the street and ends up where he started.

As Joel recalls, Clementine returned home from a night out, drinking. He made a comment about her sleeping around with other guys (to get them to like her) and she left immediately. Joel's mind takes a turn at this point; with the Lacuna technicians erasing all of his memories of Clementine, he drives down the street as the memory collapses. A car falls from the sky. He parks at a street corner and runs down the sidewalk to catch her, but comes upon his car on the opposite curb. Sure enough, Clementine is behind him, still walking away. He runs back and forth but finds no progress; street names and shop signs begin to lose their lettering as the memory fades away, leaving Joel's mind forever.

6. Joel (Jim Carrey) ditches work and catches a train to which location?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Montauk

We find out near the end of the movie that Clementine whispered 'Meet me in Montauk' to Joel just before his last memory of her was erased. This was why he had an urge to go to Montauk, even though he doesn't know why.

7. What were the names of the couple who told Joel about Lacuna, and how Clementine had had the procedure done?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Rob & Carrie

Carrie was hesitant to give Joel the information he needed, while Rob wanted to tell him. It was also Rob & Carrie who brought Joel to the party where he ended up meeting Clementine.

8. Clementine had a very unique last name. What was it?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Kruczynski

Clementine Kruczynski was played by the lovely Kate Winslet. This role was like no other she performed. She played a wild and unique character, who is also suffering from a type of depression.

9. Joel finds himself in the presence of Clementine's new boyfriend, Patrick, on more than one occasion but he can never recall what he actually looks like. In Joel's mind, what's odd about Patrick?

From Quiz Mise-en-scène of the Spotless Mind

Answer: He can never see Patrick's face.

When Joel tries to look Patrick in the face during a memory of a Barnes and Noble visit, he walks over to him and forcibly tries to spin him around. In a notably eerie turn, Patrick's head never turns around-- his body spins without showing his face. Later, when Dr. Mierzwiak introduces Joel to Patrick, his face ends up distorting, almost as though his memory has too little to base his appearance on. When Joel's procedure is complete, he has no memories of him. Patrick walks up to his car to ask why he's with Clementine, but Joel is simply confused.

10. After Clementine introduces herself to Joel on the train, she tells him not to make fun of her name, then references which Hanna Barbera cartoon character?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Huckleberry Hound

Huckleberry Hound was known for his fondness for the song 'My Darling Clementine', which is what most people think of when they hear Clementine's name for the first time. Since at this point in the story Joel has had everything to do with Clementine erased from his memory, he has no idea who Huckleberry Hound is and therefore can't make fun of her name. We later find out that when he met her the FIRST time, he did indeed think of Huckleberry Hound after he heard her name.

11. In his mind, Clementine tells Joel that he should try waking up to put an end to the procedure. What happens when he jokingly lays on the ground and tries to force his eyes to open?

From Quiz Mise-en-scène of the Spotless Mind

Answer: His eyes open outside the memory.

To humour his memory of Clementine, Joel lays down in the orange leaves of the forest and holds his eyes open. To his surprise, however, his eyes open in his bed, surrounded by a sea of wires. This also shocks the technicians, including Dr. Mierzwiak, since it means that something seriously wrong may be happening in the dream. They're forced to sedate him and a tear rolls down his face. Joel returns to the forest immediately after and realizes that something else needs to be done from within his mind. This is the only time when Joel has the ability to communicate with the outside world-- he simply opens his eyes. Unfortunately, unable to speak or move, it's not enough to call the procedure to an end.

12. What is the name of the company that does the mind erasing?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Lacuna Inc.

When simplified Lacuna in Latin means, a type of loss.

13. Here's a bit of a tough one, what is Clementine's last name?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Kruczynski

It was only mentioned twice, as far as I know. The first time was on the train scene, when they are talking about hair dye, and how she would like to have the job of naming the hair colors (IE. Blue Ruin, Red Menace, Green Fever). She says, 'My writing career! Your hair written by Clementine Kruczynski.' It's also on the card that tells Joel she's erased him.

14. The title of this film came from a phrase that was found in an Alexander Pope poem. Which poem is it?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: "Eloisa to Abelard"

The following is the specific quote from the poem: "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned".

15. During Joel's erasure, one of the three technicians reveals to another that he stole something of Clementine's during her erasure. What was it?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Panties

It was Elijah Wood's character (Patrick) who did this. He ended up falling in love with Clem during her procedure, and he stole all of Joel's items which he brought that reminded him of Clem (one of the steps in the procedure). He used these items to begin dating Clementine, but he also ended up just freaking her out because he knew her so well and a lot of the things he said seemed familiar to her (as they were already said to her by Joel).

16. What is the name of the Doctor who is in charge of the mind erasing?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Dr. Howard Mierzwaik

Tom Wilkinson is the name of the actor who played Dr. Howard Mierzwaik.

17. Joel and Clementine can only evade Lacuna for so long. Their plan to hide in unlinked memories goes down the drain, literally. Where are they when this happens?

From Quiz Mise-en-scène of the Spotless Mind

Answer: In a sink

Joel recedes into his childhood memories, inserting Clementine into spots in his mind where she isn't meant to be. This begins when he places her into the role of his mother's friend, a position Clem seems pretty thrilled with. Joel, meanwhile, hides under the kitchen table. In the real world, the Lacuna techs realize that Joel has gone off the map; Dr. Mierzwiak is forced to remain and see the process through. He finds Joel in a memory of himself and Clementine taking a bath in the sink. It ends abruptly when both of them are pulled down the drain.

18. What two colors did Clementine have her hair dyed?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: Orange and blue

The movie makes it seem as if Clementine has her hair dyed blue when she meets Joel.

19. Joel's last major memory of Clementine is their first meeting in Montauk. As he and Clem break into a beach house, what begins to happen to it?

From Quiz Mise-en-scène of the Spotless Mind

Answer: It crumbles to the ground.

One of the last sequences Joel remembers is his first time seeing Clementine in Montauk. Having arrived for a party with Rob and Carrie, he ends up wandering off and speaking with her, inevitably breaking into a local beach house with her. As they discuss the possibilities and search for a drink, Joel wonders if perhaps things can change. He remembers that when he first made the memory, he ran away because he was afraid. This time, however, he decides to stay with Clementine as the house crumbles to the ground, the last of his memories diminishing. As everything comes to an end, Clementine whispers in his ear: "Meet me in Montauk." The next day, Joel is compelled to take the train out to the beach where he meets Clementine, almost as if it's the first time.

20. What is the final line in the movie?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: 'OK.'

This is in response to Clementine assuring Joel that he will find things about her that he doesn't like, and she'll get bored with him because it's what she does. He simply responds, 'OK.'. She says 'OK' back to him, and they laugh together before we see them running down the beach of Montauk together. Interestingly, the original script of the movie had a much different ending, which was Clementine coming back to Lacuna to have Joel erased again, presumably for the nth time. I personally am glad they stuck with this ending, because you can decide what happens to them. Thanks for taking my quiz, I hope you enjoyed it.

21. Where did Clementine and Joel first meet each other?

From Quiz Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Answer: On the beach

Clementine and Joel originally met at the beach. The movie makes it seem as if they meet on the train. The train is where they end up meeting again. They show the end of the film in the beginning of the movie.
