2. Who played the lead as Jason McCullough?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

James Garner played the new sheriff. Jack Elam was his deputy, Harry Morgan was the mayor, and Burt Kennedy directed the movie.

3. How did the new sheriff prove to the mayor and town council that he was worthy of becoming sheriff?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

Answer: He shot a bullet through a washer that he tossed into the air.

He actually shot at the washer twice. The first time he did it, he told the on lookers that the bullet went right through the hole in the center of the washer. That, of course, wasn't good enough for the Mayor, so he placed a piece of tape over the washer hole and asked the sheriff to do it again. When he did it again, and the tape had a bullet hole through it, the Mayor apologized and said "I hope you didn't take offense at any thing I might have said."

4. What country was Jason saving up his money to move to?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

6. What was the first official duty the sheriff performed after he accepted the job?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

Answer: He arrested Joe Danby for murder.

While standing in a saloon at the beginning of the movie, before becoming sheriff, he witnessed Joe Danby trick a man during a gunfight and kill him. Joe Danby told onlookers that the other guy drew first and it was a fair fight. The new sheriff-to-be told Joe, in front of everyone, that he cheated by faking to draw with his left hand while the whole time he was drawing his gun with his right and drew first. He said it was an old Arizona trick but he had seen it used as far north as Montana.

7. What was wrong with the new jail?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

Answer: It didn't have any bars on the doors and windows.

The mayor and town council were very proud of their new jail, the bars just hadn't arrived, yet.

8. The sheriff insisted to the Mayor that he be allowed to do a little something on the side during his stint as sheriff. What "on the side" activity did the sheriff wish to pursue?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

Answer: prospecting for gold

The sheriff thought that the 150 dollar salary wasn't quite enough pay because of the high cost of living in the town, and the constant raising of prices of everyday necessities. He felt he needed to subsidize his income in some way in order to get by. Since the town had recently became famous for a gold strike in the local cemetery, the sheriff thought prospecting for some gold would be a good sideline.

9. How did Jason solve the problem with the jail?

From Quiz Support Your Local Sheriff

Answer: He poured red paint on the floor.

To solve the whole issue of no bars, He poured red paint on the floor and told his prisoner that that was blood from the last man who tried to escape. Amazingly, it worked! If only criminals were really that gullible!

10. The sheriff picked out a scruffy looking town local named Jake to be his deputy. What was Jake's job before becoming deputy?

Elam had regular occurring roles in the TV series "Gunsmoke", "The Rifleman" and "Cheyenne". Since Jake was the town buffoon, the Mayor asked the sheriff why he chose a character like Jake to be deputy.
