Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Trivia Questions

1. In which hospital did the incident involving the elderly lady, the regenerating kidney, and McCoy's little pill occur?

From Quiz
"Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: Mercy Hospital

The fictitious Mercy Hospital was located in the Mission District of San Francisco. The patient was an elderly woman who was in for kidney dialysis. Dr McCoy muttered something about the Dark Ages and gave her a pill. A bit later on, they passed the same lady and a group of doctors, who were trying to figure out why she was growing a new kidney. St. Swithins was the hospital in Richard Gordon's "Doctor" series of books. Royal Hope was the hospital where Martha Jones was when she met the Doctor. County General was featured in "E.R.".

2. In the first scene of the film, we watch the massive probe (which still looks like a giant Ho-Ho to me) render a Starfleet vessel powerless. Which vessel?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Part I of II

Answer: the SARATOGA

The captain identifies her vessel as the SARATOGA quite clearly.

3. Who directed this film?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy also directed "Three Men and a Baby".

4. What was Doctor McCoy doing in a 20th century hospital?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: Rescuing Chekov

Chekov had suffered a head injury that caused tearing of the middle meningeal artery. By the time the others found him, he was in surgery, about to have holes drilled in his skull to relieve the pressure. Kirk and the rest of the team held the surgical team at phaser point while McCoy used 23rd century technology to repair the damage.

5. Two whales play an integral role in the plot. They were presumably named after a famous comedy team. Which one?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: Burns and Allen

The whales are named George and Gracie. George Burns and Gracie Allen were a highly popular comedy team in the days of vaudeville, radio, and even early television.

6. Who portrays Dr. Gillian Taylor?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: Catherine Hicks

Catherine Hicks also plays the mother on "7th Heaven", with Stephen Collins, who appeared in "Star Trek - The Motion Picture".

7. How did Chekov get his head injury?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: He fell off a ledge.

Uhura had already beamed out but there wasn't enough time to pick up Chekov before the Marines turned up. He was questioned but managed to escape. Unfortunately, on the way out, he slipped and fell.

8. The woman who played the captain of the first Starfleet vessel we see disabled by the probe would later play the mother of one of the characters from a "Star Trek" television series. Which one?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Part I of II

Answer: Geordi LaForge, from "The Next Generation"

Madge Sinclair played Silva LaForge -- another female starship captain, this time of the USS HERA -- in exactly one episode of "ST:TNG", called "Interface." Born in Jamaica, Sinclair sadly died of leukemia in 1995.

9. When Sarek interrupts the Council to "speak on behalf of the accused", what are the first words he says?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: "Klingon justice is a unique point of view."

The Klingon Chancellor objects to Sareks appearance there and accuses Sarek of being biased because Kirk saved Spock.

10. What were Uhura and Chekov doing on a 20th century, nuclear powered, aircraft carrier?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: Collecting photons

They were aboard attempting to collect the photons that were emitted from the main reactor. Unfortunately, the power drain was detected from the bridge and security was dispatched. Because of their proximity to the reactor, only one person could beam out at a time. Uhura went first with the collector.

11. Dr. Gillian Taylor has an unusual talent. What is it?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: She has a photographic memory.

Gillian states this fact, and proves it, when she "replays" aloud a sentence that Spock had earlier spoken to Kirk...word for word. "I have a photographic memory," she says. "I SEE words." She does seem to have an affinity for "her" whales, but there's no evidence that she actually understands the sounds they make.

12. What does McCoy name their Klingon ship?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: H.M.S. Bounty

It is an appropriate choice, based on the novel "Mutiny on the Bounty". Like the crew in the novel, the crew of the Enterprise is facing court-martial for disobeying direct orders of a superior officer, and stealing the Enterprise in order to save Spock.

13. Which aircraft carrier did Uhura and Chekov visit when they were in 20th century San Francisco?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: The USS Enterprise

They had to ask where the "nuclear wessels" were kept and finally found out that they had to go to Alameda. They were really surprised when they found out it was the Enterprise, especially given that was also the name of their original ship. All four of those names were used for Constitution class star ships in the original TV series.

14. Gillian offers to take Kirk and Spock to dinner. What kind of restaurant does she suggest?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: Italian

Gillian: "You guys like Italian?" Nimoy states that the hilarious response(s) that Kirk and Spock provide grew out of an improvisation session. I found it to be one of the funniest moments in the film!

15. The Federation Council President (Robert Ellenstein) attempts to pacify the Klingon ambassador by noting that Kirk has been charged with a number of violations of Starfleet regulations. How many?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Part I of II

Answer: nine & 9

Oddly enough, when charges are being read at the end of the film, only SIX are listed! (Oops.)

16. Spock is taking a test, given by a computer, to test his restored memory. What question does he not understand?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: "How do you feel?"

His mother tells him that the computer knows that he is half-human and that, as her son, he has feelings, whether he understands them or not.

17. Why did Uhura and Chekov have to find a nuclear powered warship?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: To re-crystallise the dilithium crystals

The dilithium crystals had been completely drained and were breaking down. Spock theorised that high energy particles from a fission reactor could be used to reconstruct them.

18. Spock winds up declining the dinner invitation, but Kirk accepts. Once at the restaurant, Gillian orders a beer with her dinner. What kind of beer?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: Michelob

She orders a Michelob with her pizza, and Kirk, apparently unfamiliar with 20th-century cuisine, simply asks for the same thing Gillian is having. The look on his face when he first tastes the beer is quite amusing.

19. According to the first "captain's log" we hear from Admiral Kirk, how much time has elapsed between the end of "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" and this film?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Part I of II

Answer: three months

Kirk refers to the "third month of our Vulcan exile." About two years passed for those of us watching the movies, but within the storyline, time is a funny thing. =)

20. Why does Spock say he must go with the Enterprise crew?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: Because he was there

He is going to offer testimony at Kirk's trial. It is a matter of duty for him.

21. What broke the dilithium crystals in the ship that Kirk's crew were using, in "The Voyage Home"?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: Undergoing a slingshot manoeuvre around the sun at Warp 9

They performed this slingshot manoeuvre in order to return to the latter half of the 20th century. The resulting strain on the engines caused the dilithium crystals to decay.

22. Meanwhile, Scotty (James Doohan) and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) flirt with "history tampering" when they give the formula for a certain type of aluminum to a scientist in 1986, well before it's been officially "invented." What kind of aluminum is it?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: transparent

Scotty quells McCoy's concerns about altering the timeline by asking, "How do we know he didn't invent the thing?" Circular logic, perhaps...but time travel is tricky stuff. =)

23. McCoy tries to have a "philosophical" discussion about "Life. Death. Life." with Spock while they return to Earth. Spock interrupts him, saying, "Forgive me Doctor. I am receiving a number of distress calls." How does McCoy answer?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: "I don't doubt it."

Spock had told McCoy that it would be impossible to talk about death with him "without a common frame of reference." Being as McCoy probably did not feel like dying just to hold a conversation with Spock, he was probably glad for the interruption.

24. In which ship did Kirk's crew perform the slingshot maneuver?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: A Klingon Bird of Prey warship, renamed the HMS Bounty

"The Voyage Home" took place just after the events in the "Search for Spock", during which the Enterprise was destroyed. The crew managed to escape the Genesis Planet in a Klingon ship and ended up on Vulcan. They were on the way back to Earth to face charges for the theft of the Enterprise in the earlier movie. Kirk was given the command of the new Enterprise 1701-A at the end of the movie as well as being demoted to Captain.

25. At one point, Kirk and his crew have the opportunity to leave 1986 Earth and head back to the 23rd century, but they don't, because one of the crew is still helpless and incapacitated in 1986. Which one?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: Chekov

Chekov is captured during his foray into the belly of an aircraft carrier (the USS ENTERPRISE, in fact!). When he attempts to flee his captors, he falls a significant distance, suffers serious internal damage, and is held in a hospital where he is not expected to survive. Kirk refuses to leave without his crewmember and engineers a rescue.

26. When informed that they need to find "some humpbacks", what does Scotty reply with?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: "Humpbacked? People?"

Scotty has never heard of humpbacked whales.

27. Why, in the movie "The Voyage Home", did the former crew of the Enterprise go back in time?

From Quiz "Doctor Gave Me a Pill and I Grew a New Kidney!"

Answer: They needed to retrieve some whales.

They had to go back in time to get some Humpback whales, since they were extinct in the 23rd century. A space probe was trying to communicate with the local cetacean life but, when it got no response, it started to adversely affect the weather, resulting in havoc all over the globe.

28. While in the hospital, McCoy cures an elderly woman of a chronic disease in seconds. Which of her organs did he repair on the spot?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Quiz II of II

Answer: her kidney

The woman is scheduled for a dialysis treatment. McCoy, disgusted with the "barbaric" medical practices of the 20th century, gives her a pill. A few scenes later, the woman is ecstatic, cheering about the doctor who gave her a magic pill that let her grow a new kidney!

29. Meanwhile, back on Earth, we see a character named Admiral Cartwright advising the Federation Council President at Starfleet Command. The man playing Cartwright would later portray a recurring character on one of the "Trek" TV series. Which one?

From Quiz "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Part I of II

Answer: Deep Space Nine

Brock Peters would later play Joseph Sisko, father to Benjamin Sisko, the commanding officer of the space station known to Federation citizens as Deep Space Nine.

30. Where do they "park" their ship on the Earth of the past?

From Quiz "The Voyage Home" - Saving the Whales

Answer: Golden Gate Park

This is Kirk's suggestion. They are all glad to see San Francisco again, even if it is a San Francisco they have never known, because that is where Starfleet Headquarters is located in their time. Sulu was born in San Francisco.
