1980's Music for Experts Trivia Questions

1. Which band released songs such as "Crazy", "You Sure Fooled Me" and "What You Do To Me"?

From Quiz
Forgotten Songs of the 80s part 2

Answer: The John Hall Band

John Hall co-founded Musicians United For Safe Energy along with Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, and Bonnie Raitt and founded seventies band Orleans. In 2007, Hall became The U.S. Representative for New York's 19th congressional district.

2. Which band had a hit with the song "Why Me" in 1983?

From Quiz Forgotten Songs of the 80s

Answer: Planet P

Planet P featured Tony Carey, former keyboardist of rock group Rainbow. The song was released in 1983 and the music video got MTV airplay. They went on to release five more albums.

3. 1980: "Upside Down" was the first single from Diana Ross's 1980 Motown album "diana". What other Motown artist or band was originally going to record the songs on "diana", but declined?

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 30: 1980s Billboard Top 100 Part 5

Answer: Aretha Franklin

Diana Ross released the album "diana" in 1980. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of the band Chic had recently composed an entire album's worth of material for Aretha Franklin to record. Aretha passed on the project, so Motown passed the album to Diana Ross. Edwards and Rodgers had numerous conflicts with Ross over her singing, though eventually they managed to finish the album. The record went on to be her biggest selling album.

4. 1980: Steve Forbett, hailed as the new Bob Dylan, had a Number Eleven Single with "Romeo's Tune". What Cyndi Lauper video did he appear in? (Note: He played Lauper's boyfriend.)

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 29: 1980s Billboard Top 100 Part 4

Answer: Hey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun)

Romeo's Tune proved to be Forbett's most substantial hit on the charts. At the time, the critics hailed him as the new Bob Dylan, an idea Forbett dismissed as cliche. According to Forbett: "You can't pay any attention to that. It was just a cliche back then, and it's nothing I take seriously. I'm off the hook -- I don't have to be smarter than everybody else and know all the answers like Bob Dylan."

5. 1980: "Rock With You" was one of the biggest singles of 1980. Rod Temperton wrote this song for Michael Jackson. He also wrote what other major hit for Jackson?

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 28: 1980s Billboard Top 100 Part 3

Answer: Thriller

"Rock With Me" become one of the first Billboard Top 100 number one singles of the 1980s, and was the fourth highest selling single of 1980. Rod Temperton wrote three songs of Jackson on his 1982 album "Thriller": "Baby Be Mine", "Thriller", and "The Lady in My Life". He also wrote three songs from the 1979 album "Off the Wall": the aforementioned "Rock With Me", the title cut "Off the Wall", and "Burn this Disco Out".

6. 1980: Stevie Nicks wrote Fleetwood Mac's "Sara" after an affair ended badly with what member of the band?

From Quiz Ipod Shuffle 27: 1980s Billboard Top 100 Part 2

Answer: Mick Fleetwood

In 1978, Stevie Nicks wrote "Sara" after she had began an affair with Mick Fleetwood while he was married to Jennie Boyd. While he was having an affair with Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood began an affair with Sara Recor, who was at the time married to record producer Jim Record. Ultimately Mick Fleetwood and Sara moved in together and eventually married. The song in demo format was over sixteen minutes and contained several additional verses. Stevie Nicks was not angry at Sara, only Mick, and actually wrote the song with Sara at the piano. In 1980, Carol Hinton sued Stevie Nicks on grounds of plagiarism, as Carol had written and submitted a song to Warner Bros. with similar lyrics. However, Nicks had recorded the song in demo format several months before Carol Hinton had submitted the song to the record company/

7. This 70s glam band made a comeback of sorts in the 80s, thanks to MTV, with the video "Run Runaway". Who is it?

From Quiz Eighties Music: Pop's Heyday!

Answer: Frida

This was one of the ultimate, turn-it-up-loud, high-drama, pop rock songs of the 80's. It had a big sound to match its dramatic message. Frida (a.k.a. Annifrid Lyngstad) may have already sounded very familiar to radio listeners even though this was her first and last top 15 American hit. That's because she was one of the two ladies, along with Agnetha, from the pop supergroup ABBA, who had racked up a string of timeless pop hits by the time Frida struck out on her own with her solo record. Frida and Agnetha's flawless harmonies are featured on such ABBA mega-hits as "Dancing Queen," "Mama Mia" and "Take a Chance on Me." As for the wrong answers, Agnetha was Frida's partner in ABBA. Icelandic singer Bjork is another Nordic singer, but she didn't release her first solo album until 1993. Pat Benatar would have done a great version of this song, but it was Frida who rocked it out in 1982.
