Opeth Trivia Questions

1. Who was the drummer on "Orchid" and "Morningrise"?

From Quiz
Opeth

Answer: Anders Nordin

A childhood friend of Mikael Åkerfeldt. He left the band in 1997 and moved to Brazil, almost causing Opeth to split up.

2. On "Ghost Reveries" there is a track that sits in a Pre-gap. What song is it?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: "Reverie"

Yes, "Reverie" is in the Pre-gap of "Harlequin Forest," hence the track listing "Reverie/Harlequin Forest." This means that if you skip straight to track 6 on your cd-player, it will skip "Reverie" and go straight to "Harlequin Forest." "Reverie" is actually the instrumental part that plays for just over a minute (1:04, I think). In certain players, this may be listed as the last 1:04 of track 5 (eg. according to the application on my computer).

3. Which member has been dubbed Legolas by the band?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: Martin Axenrot

Axenrot is the newest drummer of Opeth, replacing longtime drummer Martin Lopez. Anders Nordin is the drummer for the first two albums, while Lopez was the drummer for the next six albums. Lopez will be sorely missed. A side note: Peter Lindgren has also recently left Opeth, and Fredrik Åkesson has taken his role. Quite a line-up change!

4. For which two bands, besides Opeth, did Mikael Åkerfeldt perform as lead vocalist?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: Bloodbath and Katatonia

He was the lead vocalist on Katatonia's "Brave Murder Day" and on Bloodbath's "Breeding Death" and "Ressurection Through Carnage". He did appear on Edge of Sanity's "Crimson" and Ayreon's "The Human Equation" too, but only as a guest vocalist.

5. One of Opeth's earlier works has a track that was produced incorrectly, which track is it?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: "Requiem"

Yes, "Requiem" was cut too early in production, and the first 1:25 of "The Apostle in Triumph" is actually the ending of "Requiem." Mikael Akerfeldt did apologise to the fans for this. Why it was not fixed on the re-release, I am unsure. "Eternal Soul Torture" is an early demo track that was included on the re-release of "Morningrise," and some part of it were used for "Advent." This is also true of "Into The Frost of Winter." If you listen closely to both, you can hear some transitions that sound very much like those on "Advent."

6. Which other well-known Swedish metal band was Martin Lopez playing drums for before he joined Opeth?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: Amon Amarth

He was behind the kit on "Once Sent From the Golden Hall", Amon Amarth's first full-length album.

7. A live DvD was released shortly after "Damnation," this DvD was entitled:

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: "Lamentations"

"Closure" is off of "Damnation" and the ending was altered for the live set of "Lamentations." The ending was much more jazz influenced, drawn out, and built up to the awesome closure that's on the album (pardon the pun). The band name Opeth was derived from the word Opet, the name of an empire in Wilbur Smith's novel, Sunbird.

8. Which two Opeth albums were supposed to be released as one double-disc, but eventually got seperated into a heavy and a mellow album?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: "Deliverance" and "Damnation"

"Deliverance" is the heavy album and "Damnation" is the mellow one. They played both albums in full on their live-DVD "Lamentations".

9. Who began to play the piano and mellotron live for Opeth during 2005, and then subsequently joined?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: Per Wiberg

Steve Wilson has played piano for Opeth on several albums, "Blackwater Park," "Damnation," and "Deliverence." Anders Nordin played the piano piece "Silhouette" on "Orchid."

10. Who was the producer for "Blackwater Park"?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: Steve Wilson

Better known as the lead vocalist/guitarist of "Porcupine Tree", a British progressive rock band. He also played as a guest musiscian on the album, and on the two albums following it. The "devious movements in your eyes..." part of "Bleak" is sung by Steve Wilson, for instance.

11. Opeth formed in what year?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: 1990

1994 was the year "Orchid" was recorded, '95 was when it was released, and '96 was when "Morningrise" was recorded and released. Both of these early albums have a different sound to the current incarnation of Opeth, partly due to the work of Johan DeFarfalla and Ander Nordin (bass player and drummer at the time, respectively). Allegedly, DeFarfalla was let go because he wanted a larger presence of bass on the albums. The early albums have a much more prominant bass, would be interesting to know what Opeth would sound like now had he got his way!

12. Who was the forming member of Opeth?

From Quiz Opeth: From Orchid to Ghost Reveries

Answer: David Isberg

David Isberg. Apparently, he failed to tell the original members that he was hiring a new bassist, Mikael Akerfeldt. This created a pretty awkward situation which resulted in every member leaving except for Isberg and Akerfeldt, what a way to start a band!

13. Why does Martin Lopez no longer play drums for Opeth?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: Psychological issues

In late 2005, Martin Lopez, for at the time unknown reasons, appeared less and less behind the kit in concert. After some time it became clear it was because he experienced anxiety attacks and quit the band completely in May 2006. Martin Axenrot, who had replaced him during his abscence, became the new drummer.

14. What was the first song Mikael Åkerfeldt and David Isberg wrote, that actually appears on one of Opeth's albums?

From Quiz Opeth

Answer: Forest of October

Track number four on "Orchid". It was called "Mystique of the Baphomet" and "Mark of the Damned", before it turned into "Forest of October". It originally had satanic lyrics, but on the album it has lyrics about depression.
