Answer: Frank Capra

He was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1935-1939) and President of The Screen Directors Guild (1939-1941). When he was nominated for his first Best Director Oscar in 1933 (for "Lady for a Day" (1933)), presenter Will Rogers opened the envelope and said "Come and get it, Frank!". Capra was halfway to the stage when he realised that Rogers wasn't referring to him, but to Frank Lloyd, who was getting the Oscar for "Cavalcade" and he had to get back to his seat rather sheepishly. He died on 3rd September 1991, aged 94.

2. This actor created one of the most iconic roles in Hollywood history when he played Norman Bates. Enough said.

Answer: Anthony Perkins

His widow was one of the passengers on flight AA-11 out of Boston that terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center on 11th September 2001. Anthony himself died 12th September 1992.

3. This actor moved to New York in 1964 and started to make his mark in small productions and then some excellent Shakespearian roles. His best known roles were Gomez Addams in the two "Addams Family" movies and General Bison in "Street Fighter"(1994).

In 1994 he suffered a stroke and fell into a coma, dying just one week later on 24th October 1994. He won a Golden Globe and an Emmy in 1995 for "The Burning Season", thus having the dubious honour of being the only man to win both these awards posthumously.

4. This actress was born into a show business family. Her father Robert was a screen actor and her mother a Broadway actress. She bewitched us all in her most famous role in a TV series from the late 60's to early 70's.

A 9 foot statue of her as Samantha Stevens riding her broomstick can be found in Salem, Massachusetts, home of the infamous Witch Trials of the 17th century. She died 18th May 1995, just 8 weeks after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

5. This soft-spoken actor is rated as one the best Hollywood ever produced. He had a wonderful life and made several films for Alfred Hitchcock and Frank Capra. He even made one film where the main character was invisible.

Frank Capra directed James's first two big hits "You Can't Take It With You" and "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington". Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" was a massive hit for James and is still a regular on the Christmas TV schedules each year. Films made by Alfred Hitchcock include "Rear Window", "Vertigo" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much". The invisible film character was a 6 foot rabbit in "Harvey". During World War II, James served in the U.S. Army Air Force and rose to the rank of colonel. After the war, he continued serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, ultimately becoming a brigadier general. He died 2nd July 1997.

6. This film director won an Oscar for a science fiction film remembered for a hauntingly beautiful space sequence set to music.

Answer: Stanley Kubrick

The film in question is "2001: A Space Odyssey". Kubrick had a bit of a reputation for imposing his ideas onto film projects. When he took over "Spartacus", cinematographer Russell Metty complained that Kubrick was taking over his job. Kubrick simply brushed the complaints aside. Ironically, Metty won an Oscar for that film. Stanley Kubrick died 7th March 1999.

Shoemaker was among the first to validate the idea that Meteor Crater in Winslow, Arizona was created by a meteoritic impact. His knowledge of impact cratering became valuable to NASA, who used him to train astronauts bound for the Moon. Shoemaker's wife, Carolyn, sustained serious injuries in the same crash, but survived.

9. Air Force pilot and original Mercury astronaut Deke Slayton died on June 13 in League City, Texas, at age 69. What medical condition kept Deke grounded until the end of the Apollo program?

NASA took advantage of Slayton's rigorous training for Mercury by making him the head of the Astronaut Office. In that capacity, he helped oversee crew training and assignment for the Gemini and Apollo programs. He would fly on the joint Apollo-Soyuz mission in July 1975.

10. This director won two Best Director Oscars (1958 and 1963) and was nominated on five other occasions. Some of his most famous films are "Lawrence of Arabia", "A Passage to India" and "Doctor Zhivago". He was born in England.

He was married six times. His first and third wives were his first cousins. The American Film Institute honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990. He died on 16th April 1991.

His birth name was Wonga Philip Harris. He provided the voice of Baloo the Bear in "The Jungle Book" (1967), Thomas O'Malley in "The AristoCats" (1970) and Little John in "Robin Hood" (1973). He was an avid golfer and had his own golf tournament "The Phil Harris Golf Classic". Following the death of Bing Crosby, he took over managing the Bing Crosby Golf Tournament. He died 11th August 1995.

14. This actor is best remembered for two roles. The first was a comic villain in a TV series and the other a recurring role in the "Rocky" films.

Answer: Burgess Meredith

Burgess made his first film in 1936. He was a captain in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He continued making films until he was named an unfriendly witness by the House Un-American Activities Committee in the early 1950s, whereupon studio work disappeared. Work slowly picked up again and he became "The Penguin" in the Batman TV series of the late 1960's. He was Rocky Balboa's trainer Mickey in the "Rocky" films. He died 9th September 1997.

15. This actor won an Oscar but actually refused to accept it as he did not want to be in competition with other actors.

George really did not like the awards system, feeling the ceremonies were nothing more than 'meat markets'. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1960 and again in 1962 when he refused to accept even the nomination. When he won the 1971 Oscar for "Patton", he stayed at home. The film's director accepted the Oscar on behalf of Scott on the night but it was returned to the Academy the following day. Nevertheless, he was nominated again the following year. Scott died 22nd September 1999.

The answer is Freddie Mercury, the iconic front man of Queen. Mercury had some success as a solo artist, but legendary songs like 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Somebody to Love', 'We Will Rock You', 'We Are the Champions', 'Under Pressure', 'Radio Ga Ga', 'I Want It All', 'I Want to Break Free', 'Who Wants To Live Forever' and 'The Show Must Go On' are all Queen releases.

Great Western Forum was home to both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Kings from 1967 until 1999, and was the first privately funded facility of its kind in the United States. Cooke constructed the building after running into problems negotiating a lease with the city's coliseum authority to continue using the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

A routine pickup basketball game turned into tragedy for Lewis, who was claiming his place among the NBA elite. Lewis suffered from arrhythmia, or an abnormal heartbeat, that caused his heart to enlarge. It is one of the most common causes of cardiac arrest.

Gene was married to Majel Barrett who played nurse Christine Chapel in the original Star Trek TV series. She actually appeared later series, too ,as a computer voice or as Lwaxana Troi in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Gene died on 24th October 1991 and some of his ashes were fittingly launched into space by a rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The widow of civil rights leader Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz raised six daughters as a single mother. One of those daughters, Qubilah Shabazz, had problems raising her son, named Malcolm after her father. She sent the boy to New York, from her home in Minnesota, to live with Shabazz, hoping she would be a positive influence on him. Malcolm started the fire in hopes that he would be sent home. Ironically, Mrs. Shabazz died looking for him, thinking he was still trapped in the apartment.

27. Alfred M. Butts, aged 93, died in Rhineback, New York, on April 4. What popular board game did Butts invent?

An unemployed architect, Butts decided to try and invent a new board game during the Great Depression. He originally called it Lexico before settling on Criss-Cross Words, and tried unsuccessfully to sell it to major game manufacturers. He kept trying and, in 1948, with the help of business partner James Brunot, finally brought the game, bearing its present name, to market. It's been in homes across the country ever since.
