Wives of Henry VIII Trivia Questions

1. Anne of Cleves was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. John III, Duke of Cleves, was her father. Who was her mother?

From Quiz
Anne of Cleves: Fourth Wife of Henry VIII

Answer: Maria of Jülich-Berg

Maria of Jülich-Berg was heiress to her father's states of Jülich, Berg, and Ravensberg in Germany. She had been engaged to John III, Duke of Cleves, since 1496 when she was 6 and John was 7. They actually got married in 1509. Maria adhered to Catholicism and educated Anne on how to organise a noble household. This was a typical education for German noblewomen in those days, and this differed from the education of English noblewomen of the same period, which was more geared towards academic knowledge and cultural sophistication - both of which Henry VIII found very attractive in women.

2. It is generally agreed that Catherine Howard was likely born in Lambeth, London. But where was she brought up?

From Quiz Catherine Howard: Fifth Wife of Henry VIII

Answer: Horsham

Catherine Howard was brought up in Chesworth House, a mile south of Horsham. Her exact date of birth is unknown, but it is estimated she was born in 1523. Her mother died c.1528, so she was sent to live at Chesworth House under the care of her father's stepmother, Agnes Howard, the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. Agnes Howard, however, was often at court and there were reports of the children being allowed to run wild, as she was rarely around and had little to do with their upbringing. Catherine appeared to have received little intellectual training.

3. It is not recorded exactly where Catherine Parr was born. Where do historians generally agree where she was most likely to have been born?

From Quiz Catherine Parr: Last Wife of Henry VIII

Answer: Blackfriars, London

Catherine Parr was the oldest child of Thomas Parr who was lord of the manor in Kendal, of Westmorland, which is now Cumbria. It was once widely believed that Catherine Parr was born in Kendal because of her father's presence as a lord there, however, Kendal Castle was in severe disrepair at the time of Catherine's birth. Her family had hence been living in their townhouse in Blackfriars, London. The journey from Blackfriars to Kendal in those days would have amounted to two weeks, and historians now consider it doubtful that Thomas Parr would have subjected his pregnant wife to this. Therefore, it it considered most likely that Catherine Parr was born in Blackfriars.

4. Catherine married Henry when he was nearing 50. Approximately how old was she?

From Quiz Catherine Howard

Answer: 15-19

Although Catherine was kin to the former Queen and other nobles she was impoverished. She was the tenth child and her actual birth date was not recorded. It is estimated to be around 1520-1525; most commonly cited as 1521. She was very young when she caught the king's eye.

5. Like Anne Boleyn, Catherine's year of birth is unknown but which of the dates below do historians think is the most likely date for her birth?

From Quiz Catherine Howard

Answer: 1521

As well as not knowing when Catherine was born, there is also little known of where she was born but many believe she was born in London.

7. Jane Seymour was born in either 1508 or 1509 to Sir John Seymour of Wiltshire and Margery Wentworth. Jane had two brothers who became very important to her son when he came to the throne. What were their names?

From Quiz Jane Seymour

Answer: Thomas and Edward

After Henry VIII died, Thomas married Katherine Parr, and there were rumours that he had tried to engage in a relationship with Henry's daughter Princess Elizabeth. Edward, on the other hand, played on a key role in Edward VI's early reign. In the role of protector he was effectively running the country. Eventually, both Jane's brothers were executed when they fell from favour.

8. Anne's birthdate is unknown but most historians think it is either 1501 or 1507. The date may be in doubt, but her parents are not. What were their names?

From Quiz Anne Boleyn

Answer: Year unknown

There has always been discussions and disagreements regarding Annes year of birth. Guesses range from 1499-1507 but most scholars choose between 1501 or 1507. The date 1501 is the most favoured and is supported by an example of Anne's handwriting done in 1514. I guess though it's just one of those things we will never know!

From Quiz Henry VIII and his Six Wives

Answer: Anne of Cleves

If you think Henry executed all his wives, you're getting this mixed up with the 'Arabian Nights' and Sheherazade. Henry divorced Wife Number Four (Anne of Cleves) after six months on the basis of her looks (he called her the 'Flanders mare'), and she got a very good bargain for going along with it.

24. Anne of Cleves was first betrothed in the late 1530s. To whom was she engaged?

From Quiz Anne of Cleves: Fourth Wife of Henry VIII

Answer: Francis I, Duke of Lorraine

Anne of Cleves was first betrothed when she was 11 years old. Francis was about 10. The engagement was brief and Francis ended up marrying Christina of Denmark, in 1541. Anne's father, the Duke of Cleves and Francis' father, the Duke of Lorraine, signed a marriage contract for their children, Anne and Francis, in 1527. This was being brokered by the Duke of Guelders, who negotiated land and money for the marriage to take place. This fell through when the Duke of Guelders died in 1538, and Anne of Cleves' brother, William of Cleves, was named as his heir. The ambassador from Lorraine visited William in order to cement the marriage between Anne and Francis, however, Anne's brother felt differently than the Duke of Guelders, and would not agree to the marriage.

Both Mannox and Catherine confessed during interrogations about her adultery that they had had sexual contact, although they both stated they had not gone as far as intercourse.
