Bible: Something in Common Trivia Questions

1. Which creature was arguably Satan, the fallen angel, in disguise? (Genesis 3; Revelation 12)

From Quiz
An Angel in Disguise

Answer: Serpent

According to Genesis 3, a serpent tempted Eve to eat of the forbidden tree. She did and then Adam ate after her. The serpent appears to be a literal animal; the text even states that it was "wiser than any beast of the field which the Lord God made" (3:1, Easy Bible translation). Then as punishment for his role in the fall of mankind, God cursed the serpent to be cursed more than any other animal. The curse seems to include slithering and having a fork tongue. Snakes appear elsewhere in the Bible as the descendants of this original creature. However, the book of Revelation calls Satan the ancient serpent. To the reader, this might seem contradictory or confusing. It doesn't seem likely that Satan actually WAS the serpent, given the description in Genesis. However, one could still argue that by possessing or using the serpent for his will, Satan was in disguise.

2. Genesis 19:15 tells of a man being told by angels as morning dawned to "arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." What was name of the man who was told to flee in the morning?

From Quiz It Happened In the Morning In the Bible

Answer: Lot

Lot, a resident of Sodom, was told by angels in the morning to flee the city with his wife and two daughters "lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city", as per Genesis 19:15 in the NKJV. Scripture tells of Sodom and the nearby city of Gomorrah being destroyed by brimstone and fire unleashed by God as punishment for the depravity of the residents. As part of the instructions Lot received, no one was to look back on the destruction of the cities as they fled to safety. However, Lot's wife looked back and in a case of divine retribution she was transformed into a pillar of salt, as per Genesis 19:26.

3. Genesis 43:16 tells of a man, upon seeing Benjamin and his other brothers, instructing the steward of his house to slaughter an animal "for these men will dine with me at noon." Who was the man who was preparing to dine with his brothers at noon?

From Quiz It Happened at Noon in the Bible

Answer: Joseph

The correct answer is Joseph. Chapter 43 of Genesis tells of Joseph's brothers returning to Egypt a second time, bringing along Benjamin to fulfil an earlier request of Joseph. The chapter ends with Joseph weeping in private after seeing Benjamin and then, after regaining his composure, joining his brothers for a noontime meal. Later, Joseph would reveal his true identity to his brothers.

4. JESUS: This is considered by most scholars as my first miracle. I did it at a wedding. What did I do?

From Quiz I Only Did It Once

Answer: Turned water to wine

According to John 2, this was Jesus's first miracle. Scholars generally mark this event as the beginning of His public ministry. Most believe that Jesus was thirty at that point.

5. Going by tradition, which book did Moses NOT write?

From Quiz Who Didn't Write the Bible Book?

Answer: Judges

Moses is traditionally credited with writing the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible, but he did not write Judges. In fact, Judges was written an enormous amount of time after the death of Moses. For the record, the first five books of the Bible are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The first five books are known as the Pentateuch. Tradition holds Joshua wrote a substantial portion of the Book of Joshua.

6. Who received a letter from King David telling him to put Uriah at the front of the battle line and then to have all the other soldiers suddenly retreat? (2 Samuel 11:14-15.)

From Quiz A Quick Look at Letters in the Bible

Answer: Joab

King David's letter giving instructions on having Uriah killed was received and acted upon by Joab. In addition to being the commander of David's army, he was a nephew of the king. Scripture states Joab was the son of David's sister, Zuriah. David wanted Uriah, a soldier, removed from the scene because he had an adulterous affair with his wife Bathsheba. The tryst took place while Uriah was away in battle and Bathsheba became pregnant. In his letter, David told Joab to place Uriah at the front of the "hottest battle" and then to have all the other soldiers suddenly retreat "so that he may be struck down and die." The plan worked to perfection. Ironically, the letter David wrote to Joab was hand delivered by Uriah. For details, see 2 Samuel 11:1-27.

7. According to Genesis 4 of the Names of God Bible, when did people begin to worship Yahweh (the LORD)?

From Quiz Religions within the Bible

Answer: When Enosh was born

"Adam made love to his wife again. She gave birth to a son and named him Seth, because she said, 'Elohim has given me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.' A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to worship Yahweh" (Genesis 4:25-26, Names of God, NOG). Other translations of verse 26 provide similar ideas, but some refer to prayer instead of worship. For examples, the Expanded Bible (EXB) says, "Seth also had a son, and they named him Enosh. At that time people began to pray to [call on the name of] the Lord." The Message (MSG) translation uses both: "And then Seth had a son whom he named Enosh. That's when men and women began praying and worshiping in the name of God." According to the Bible, Adam was the first man. He wasn't exactly born because God created him directly, as an adult, from the dust. Adam's son Seth, his son Enosh, and Enosh's descendants are sometimes called "the righteous line" because, according to Luke 3, Jesus Christ (God in the flesh, based upon John 1 and other parts of the Bible) descended from them. As Luke 3:38 states, Jesus was the son of Enosh; the son of Seth; the son of Adam; the son of God.

8. Christians believe one of the first prophecies pertaining to Christ is found in Genesis 49:10, a verse stating the Messiah would be a descendant of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. According to Genesis 49:10, from what tribe would Christ come?

From Quiz Old Testament Prophecies About Christ

Answer: Judah

Christians believe Old Testament Scripture states Christ would be a descendant of the tribe of Judah. Genesis 49:10 in the NKJV states, "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people." Micah 5:2 also tells of the Messiah coming from the tribe of Judah. Matthew 1:2-3 tells of Jesus being a descendant of Judah. The verses are part of the genealogy of Christ. It's interesting to note that, in Revelation 5:5, John, the writer of the book, tells of being informed, "the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David" had been successful in opening a special scroll, resulting in the loosening of seven seals.

9. Scripture tells of God descending on a mountain and the mountain quaked greatly before Moses went up to meet with God. What was the name of the mountain? (Exodus 19:18-19)

From Quiz Shaking Things Up: A Quiz About Earthquakes

Answer: Mount Sinai

Prior to Moses receiving the Ten Commandments from God, Scripture states Mount Sinai became engulfed in smoke when the LORD descended upon it in fire. Exodus 19:18-19 states the mountain "was completely in smoke" and "the whole mountain quaked greatly". It must have been a spectacular as well as terrifying sight. Scriptures goes on to tell of the LORD calling Moses to the top of the mountain and then proceeding to give him the Ten Commandments for the Israelites to follow. (In some places in the Bible, Mount Sinai is referred to as Mount Horeb.)

10. What prophetess led the Israelites in a victory dance after they crossed the Red Sea? (Exodus 15:20-21)

From Quiz Dancers and Dancing in the Bible

Answer: Miriam

Exodus 15:20-21 tells of Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, taking a timbrel and leading the Israelite women in a victory song and dance. The main refrain of the song was, "Sing to the LORD for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!" The song is in reference to the Egyptian army which was drowned in their ruthless pursuit of the Israelites. Scripture states the LORD parted the Red Sea, enabling the Israelites to safely cross to the other side. It was a different story for the Egyptian army, however. Scripture reports the Egyptians also attempted to cross the Red Sea when the waves were parted, but when they got part way across, the waves suddenly stopped being parted. As a result, the Egyptian soldiers all drowned.

11. Job 1 states that the sons of God (angels) came before the LORD. Satan, the fallen or evil angel, appeared too. When God asked him, where did Satan say he came from?

From Quiz Sons of the Living God

Answer: Earth

It seems that angels are called "sons of God" because they, unlike human beings, don't have biological parents. God created the angels, however many, directly, without the aid of mothers or fathers. Therefore, they can't be called anyone's sons except for God's. Angels also don't normally marry anyone or reproduce, although Genesis 6 might include an exception to this. According to Genesis 6, "the sons of God" married human women and had offspring with them. Many Christians believe that all angels are males. There are only three named angels in the Bible: Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer, who became Satan. These are masculine names. In addition, the angels whom God sent to Sodom and Gammorah looked exactly like human men (Genesis 19:5). The men who lived there thought the angels were human males. Most (if not all) other angels of the Bible are described as masculine too, but I do wonder if Isaiah 34:15 could refer to a female fallen angel or demon. Job 1:7 states that Satan said he came from Earth or the earth. According to popular culture or depictions of the devil, Satan lives in the Lake of Fire, also known as Hell. However, this is a misconception! According to the Bible, Satan currently lives in the earth (Revelation 12:9; 2 Corinthians 4:4) and he won't be put into the Lake of Fire until Christ's second coming (Revelation 20:10)!

12. According to Matthew 3:13-17, who baptized Jesus in the Jordan River?

From Quiz Baptisms in the New Testament

Answer: John the Baptist

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, as per Matthew 3:13-17. Initially John didn't want to baptize Jesus, indicating he was not worthy of doing such a thing for Christ. However, Jesus convinced John such action should be taken when He said, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Scripture states that when Jesus came up from the water, "t6he heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'." According to Wikipedia, the Jordan River is 251 kilometres (156 miles) long and empties into the Dead Sea.

13. Immediately following the overture of Handel's Messiah, a tenor comes on to sing, "Comfort Ye, My People" and "Every Valley Shall Be Exalted". These lyrics were obtained from the first four verses of the fortieth chapter of which prophet's book?

From Quiz The Bible, "Messiah"-Style!

Answer: Isaiah

"Every valley shall be exalted, And every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain." (Isaiah 40:4) Following the tenor's contribution, the chorus comes on to sing verse 5, "And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." (Isaiah 40:5) Isaiah is used considerably throughout The Messiah; for purposes of this quiz, I only use each book once.

14. Can you name the only children mentioned via their name in the Gospels?

From Quiz ''Let the little children come to Me.''

Answer: Jesus and John

John the Baptist is mentioned at his naming ceremony. Luke 1:80 says, 'And the child (John) grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.' Jesus is, of course, mentioned at His naming ceremony and also at the incident of His going missing in the Temple as a twelve year old in Luke Chapter 2. Salome, whose name is not mentioned, is widely believed (from historical sources) to be Herodias' daughter whom Herodias made ask king Herod for the head of John the Baptist.

15. Who was the queen who had many prophets murdered, and was so wicked that she was thrown out of her window to eventually be eaten by dogs, as detailed in 2 Kings?

From Quiz Dastardly Deeds

Answer: Jezebel

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who was married to one of the worst kings of Israel, Ahab. They worshiped Baal and Asherah and, in an effort to turn the people away from God, Jezebel had the prophets and the other believers in God persecuted and executed. The prophet Elijah had presented a challenge to the Baal prophets. Each would build an altar to their respective gods and whoever's god sent fire to burn their offering would be the legitimate god. When nothing happened to the altar of Baal but the altar to God was consumed by fire, Elijah had the spectators kill the prophets of Baal. Jezebel was so enraged that Elijah had to run for fear of death. Ahab was succeeded by his son Joram. His commander, Jehu, was anointed by the prophet Elisha to march against all of the descendants of Ahab and destroy them in order to take over as king of Israel. The final obstacle before taking the throne was Jezebel. Jehu had her servants throw her out the window and his army's horses trampled her body. Before he was able to have her body buried it was eaten by dogs, leaving only her head and pieces of her body for burial.

16. In which book of the Old Testament does God criticize the heart this way? "The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable- who can understand it?" (HCSB)

From Quiz The Bible: Sin, Evil, Guilt

Answer: Jeremiah

Jeremiah is known for being one of the more depressing of the Old Testament prophets, and this passage (Jeremiah 17:9) is hardly an exception. After saying that the heart is evil beyond understanding, God goes on to describe how He examines the heart to give everybody whatever their actions deserve. (You probably knew that Peter is not a book of the Bible.)

17. So, you say, "I'd rather go to hell and be with my friends than go to heaven and be stuck with all those 'churchy' hypocrite types for all of eternity!" Why might this line of reasoning be a bit doubtful, according to Mark 9:43?

From Quiz Heaven Or Hell? You Decide.

Answer: Hell is a place of torment, not of fun and games

The King James Version of Mark 9:43 presents a conversation of Jesus as He spoke among His disciples; following is a portion of this quotation by Jesus - "And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched...") (For a better clarity, read the entire segment of the chapter that includes verses 42-49.) (In no way does this text imply that anyone should do bodily harm to themselves; it was merely being pointed out that hell is a place of incredible torment, and that it should be avoided at all costs.)

18. A centurion in charge of Roman soldiers named Cornelius, the apostle Paul, and an Ethiopian eunuch all have something in common. What was ---?

From Quiz Bible Folks With Things In Common: Jeopardy-Style

Answer: they were early converts to Christianity

The centurion, the apostle and the eunuch were each converted to Christianity during the early days of the church. These three men, who were descendants of Noah's sons, Japheth, Shem, and Ham respectively, represent a complete cross-section of mankind. With their individual conversions, ALL of the sons of Noah are thus shown to be chosen by God, and by extension this principle of inclusion may be seen to apply to ALL people today who will accept Him as Lord. Christians, of course, believe that it is through an individual's acceptance of Jesus as being the first-born Son of God that this inclusion occurs.

19. "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" As recorded in the New International Version, which New Testament author wrote these words and in what book are they found?

From Quiz The Indescribable Gift

Answer: Paul, 2 Corinthians 9:15

"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" (2 Corinthians 9:15) Paul wrote these words after making a request for a donation from the church at Corinth to help the poor at the church in Jerusalem. He wanted to remind them of the great gift of grace they had received in Jesus Christ. James 1:17 reads, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,..." John 4:10 says, "Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water ...'" Luke 8:20 reads, "Peter answered: 'May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!' ..."

20. What book of the Bible contains the best-known passage about times and seasons?

From Quiz There's a Time and a Season for Everything

Answer: Ecclesiastes

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot" (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 NIV). It gives several different times and seasons, like the time to be born and the time to die mentioned above, and many others. The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon and talks about how the things of the world are meaningless. At the end of the book it says that if a person "fears God and keeps his commandments", then he or she has fulfilled "the whole duty of man". Question by Jimmy (J-Zilch).

23. The book of Revelation was written in Koine Greek. What is the Greek name for the book of Revelation?

From Quiz Prophecy in the English Bible

Answer: Apokalypsis

As close to the Greek spelling as Latin letters will allow, the correct answer is Apokalypsis , which means "the unveiling of something previously unrevealed" In English the word is rendered as apocalypse, which people associate with prophecy that foretells disaster. Apokrypha means hidden, and refer to a set of books which were written between the years of the Old and New Testaments. These were once part of the canon but no longer appear in Protestant Bibles because the contents thereof are considered not to be divinely inspired. Musterio Enigma is the modern Greek for mystery.

30. Looney_tunes is often on my case when I submit Bible quizzes to her for approval. She stresses it is imperative I make mention about the Bible version I am using in every Bible quiz I write. Why does Looney_tunes make such a demand?

From Quiz My 1,000th Quiz -- A Salute to the Editors

Answer: Because names can be different in various Bible versions.

Yes, it's important the Bible version used is mentioned in every Bible quiz, largely because some names and other general information can be different. A classic case is Esther 1:1 in the NKJV and the NIV. In the verse in the NKJV, the king of Persia is identified as Ahasuerus, but in the NIV he is named Xerxes. (This even though historians generally agree Ahasuerus and Xerxes are one and the same.) Another example of a difference in a name is the father of John the Baptist. In the NKJV, he is identified as Zecharias and in the NIV as Zechariah. On a personal note on this matter, I have come across Bible quizzes posted on FunTrivia something like fifteen years ago with the Bible version used in the quiz not identified. As a result, I have been unable to correctly answer some questions as I had no idea about the Bible version being used. Looney_tunes' requirement is based on sound, common sense. However, even after one thousand quizzes I am still sometimes guilty of not stating the Bible version used in a particular quiz. Fortunately, Looney_tunes has caught my shortcoming and has always made sure my quizzes appear with the Bible version that is being used. As regular players of my quizzes will know, I usually use the NKJV in my quizzes. However, I have in the past compiled quizzes using the NIV and the KJV.
