trivia question Quick Question
Peroxides are normal binary compounds, where oxygen is the non-metal, with one extra oxygen. Which of these is an example of a peroxide?

From Quiz "Dancing Cheek to Cheek"

Chemical Names and Formulas Trivia Questions

1. NOTE: All numbers in the compounds are subscripts. Binary compounds simply consist of two elements, in the simplest case each with only one common oxidation number. Name the binary compound Na2S.

From Quiz
Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Sodium Sulphide

Sodium sulphide is used in the production of paper, and can be found in OTC ingrown toenail relief products. It can cause skin burns if in contact with humans. Naming binary compounds is the easiest in chemical nomenclature. Simply state the metal first, then the non-metal with the last suffix of "-ide" instead of its normal suffix. Oxidation numbers represent the charge (or charges) for an element. Here are some other binary compounds: Li3P - Lithium Phosphide CaCl2 - Calcium Chloride NaF - Sodium Floride

2. Dichromates are toxic substances that are usually insoluble in water. What is the formula for this polyatomic ion?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: Cr2O7 (2-)

CrO4 (2-) is chromate, not dichromate. The other two don't exist, according to my research.

3. What is the formula for cesium bromide?

From Quiz Chemical Nomenclature (Compounds)

Answer: CsBr

4. Some metals have multiple oxidation numbers. For example, determine the formula of Ferrous chloride or Iron (II) chloride.

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: FeCl2

Iron (II) chloride is used in water treatment to reduce chromates in the water. The most common way to distinguish which oxidation state is to either put the number in Roman numerals between the two elements. The other way used in this example is only valid for those with exactly two oxidation numbers. Use the Latin word for iron, and add the suffix -ous or -ic depending on whether it is the lower or higher of the two oxidation numbers, respectively. SnCl2 - Tin (II) Chloride OR stannous chloride Pb3N4 - Lead (TV) Nitride OR plumbic nitride FeBr3 - Iron (III) Bromide OR ferric bromide

5. Hydroxide is a popular ion used in bases. What is its formula?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: OH (1-)

H2O isn't a polyatomic ion, but it is the popular solvent, water. H (1+) is merely a proton. (1 proton, 0 neutrons, 0 electrons) O2H (-3) doesn't exist. OH without charge is a hydroxyl radical.

6. What is the chemical name for H2S(aq)?

From Quiz Chemical Nomenclature (Compounds)

Answer: hydrosulfuric acid

The (aq) denotation in chemistry refers to a compound in aqueous solution, meaning it is dissolved in water. Hydrogen sulfide dissolved in water is in fact called hydrosulfuric acid according to standard acid nomenclature.

7. When naming covalent compounds, the prefix system is used. CCl4 is a covalent compound, so how is it named using the prefix system?

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Carbon Tetrachloride

CCl4 is used by stamp collectors to reveal watermarks without damaging the stamp. It has previously been used in lava lamps and fire extinguishers. It can also be called tetrachloromethane in organic chemistry. Mono can be eliminated when dealing with the first of the two elements. Along with changing the second element's suffix to -ide, both elements need to have the correct prefix in front. These are the prefixes used: 1- Mono 2- Di 3- Tri 4- Tetra 5-Penta 6-Hexa 7-Hepta 8-Octa 9-Nona 10-Deca Here are some other compounds that follow these rules: Dinitrogen Pentoxide -N2O5 Selenium Hexaoxide - SeO6 Chlorine Dioxide - ClO2

8. Perchlorate has multiple uses. Its found in matches, flares, explosives, and even nuclear reactors. So what is the formula for this polyatomic ion?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: ClO4 (1-)

ClO3 (1-) is chlorate. ClO2 (1-) is chlorite. ClO (1-) is hypochlorite.

9. Not just revolutionaries, in chemistry radicals are fragmentary covalent compounds with one or more unpaired electrons. Name the "revolutionary" ClO3.

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Chlorate

Chlorate is a powerful oxidizer, and were once used in pyrotechnics. They are unstable when combined with combustible substances, so now perchlorates are used in fireworks. Radicals can also gain and lose electrons. For each situation, these are the changes: +1 oxygen: add prefix "per" (ClO4, perchlorate) -1 oxygen: use suffix "ite" (ClO2, chlorite) -2 oxygen: use suffix "ite" and prefix "hypo" (ClO, hypochlorite)

10. In organic chemistry, addition reactions combine two or more lighter molecules into one heavier one. Ethene (C2H4) thus reacts with elemental fluorine (F2) to form what compound? Give the simplest version of the formula (molecular formula).

From Quiz Let's react!

Answer: C2H4F2

Was that easy? I hope so. Additions yield only one product which is the combination of the two (or more) reactants. Halogens readily add onto a double bond such as that in ethene. C2H4 + F2 = C2H4F2. You could also write the product as a condensed formula to show that each of the carbon atoms bonds with one of the fluorines: CH2F-CH2F.

11. The oxyacid HNO3 is formed when H+ ions are added to a radical. (NO3). Name the acid.

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Nitric Acid

The most common use of nitric acid is in rocket fuel, and fertilizer. Nitric acid is used in woodworking to artificially age pine and maple wood. It is a very corrosive liquid as well. The number of oxygens can vary in oxyacids, but in its original form the suffix -ic is added to the root of the middle element to name it. Here is the nomenclature for each outcome: +1 Oxygen...add perfix "per" (HNO4, pernitric acid) -1 Oxygen...use suffix "ous" instead of "ic" (HNO2, nitrous acid) -2 Oxygen...use preifx "hypo" and suffix "ous" (HNO, hyponitrous acid)

12. Filter tipped cigarettes are possible thanks to Acetate Products Ltd. What is the formula for the polyatomic ion, acetate?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: C2H3O2 (1-)

C2H3O2 (1-) can also be written as CH3COO (1-), but is the only one of the four to exist.

13. H2TeO3 is the formula for what acid?

From Quiz Chemical Nomenclature (Compounds)

Answer: tellurous acid

14. Many metals bond with radicals like they do with non-metals, using similar nomenclature. Name Al2(SO4)3.

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Aluminium Sulphate

Aluminum sulphate is used to lower the pH of garden soil, and can be found in water purification. It has been the subject of controversy, as small traces are found in baking soda. Concerns have been raised over having aluminum in the diet. Naming salts with radicals, are the same as normal ionic compounds, except the radical is left as is, and the suffix does not change. The radical naming rules also has to be correct as well. If it was SO3, than it would be sulphite, not sulphate, its general radical. The metal is left in its normal name. Some other radicals Mg(ClO3)2 - Magnesium Chlorate Mg(IO)2 - Magnesium Hypoiodite Ca3(PO4)2- Calcium Phosphate

15. Ammonium nitrate is heavily used in explosives and fertilizers. What is the formula for the polyatomic ion, nitrate?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: NO3 (1-)

NO2 (-1) is nitrite. NO isn't a polyatomic ion but is called nitrogen monoxide. N2O is also not a polyatomic ion, but is called dinitrogen monoxide.

16. What is the formula for ammonia?

From Quiz Chemical Nomenclature (Compounds)

Answer: NH3

17. Binary acids are composed of hydrogen, and a non-metal, and dissolved in water. Name the binary acid HBr(aq).

From Quiz Dancing Cheek to Cheek

Answer: Hydrobromic Acid

Hydrobromic Acid is used mostly in chemistry, to form different forms of compounds. Naming binary acids is also quite easy, as the hydro- is used to indicate hydrogen, and the root of the non-metal is included. The second word is always "acid". To top it of add the suffix "-ic" is put on the end. For example. HI(aq) - Hydroiodic Acid HCl(aq) - Hydrochloric Acid HF(aq) - Hydrofluoric Acid Note: Binary acids are formed once dissolved in water. HBr is hydrogen bromide if no water is present.

18. Time to do some spring cleaning, and we have all our cleaning products in the kitchen. Sodium sulfite is one popular compound found in these cleaners. What is the formula for the polyatomic ion, sulfite?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: SO3 (2-)

SO4 (2-) is Sulfate. The other two do not exist.

19. "Someone's poisoned the water hole!" Cyanide poisoning is one type of poisoning found in water. What is the formula for the polyatomic ion, cyanide?

From Quiz Polyatomic Ions

Answer: CN (1-)

CNS (1-) is thiocyanate. The other two don't exist.

20. What is the chemical name for the diatomic anion, OH-?

From Quiz Chemical Nomenclature (Compounds)
