The Florida Marlins was one of two expansion teams that joined the National League in 1993. In 1997, and after only five seasons, the team was on top of the heap by defeating the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. The franchise changed its name for the 2012 season when they moved to a new ballpark and also changed their logo.

It was Lachemann's first managing job since 1984 when he managed the Milwaukee Brewers. He led the Marlins to 64 wins in 1993, and never won more than 67 games in a season with the Marlins. He was given the boot in 1996.
