NHL Players Trivia Questions

1. How many goals did Washington Capital left winger Alexander Ovechkin score in the 2007-08 season?

From Quiz
NHL Players Stats

Answer: 65

Ovechkin potted 65, the highest total since the 1995-96 season that saw Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux net 69.

2. This lesser-known, yet anatomically named player shares his name with the bottom of the human head, but with a small cut. What is his name?

From Quiz NHL Players: Fun Anatomy Lessons

Answer: Rick Chinnick

The chin is the bottom of the human head and a nick is a tiny wound, so "Chin" + "Nick" = Rick Chinnick. Yes, I had that much time to think of that! Anyways, Rick Chinnick was drafted into the NHL 41st overall by the Minnesota North Stars, way back in 1973. He was also drafted into the WHA 77th overall, in the same year's draft. He chose the NHL, and there were mixed results over whether or not he made the right choice. In his NHL "career", Chinnick played in only four games, recording only two assists. Most likely he never injured his chin, but he certainly has a fun name to remember.

28. Despite a long-standing NHL rule stating that goaltenders cannot serve as team captains, the Vancouver Canucks named who as their captain just before the 2008-2009 season?

From Quiz O Captain! My Captain!

Answer: Roberto Luongo

The rule, colloquially referred to as the "Durnan rule" was enacted before the 1948-49 NHL season. The rule's informal name refers to Bill Durnan, a goaltender who served as captain of the Montreal Canadiens for part of the 1947-48 season. The league decided that goalies should not be team captains because of multiple complaints that the time it took Durnan to go to and from his end of the rink to centre ice to speak with officials created unnecessary delays in the game, sometimes giving his team an unofficial and unsanctioned brief 'time out'. The Vancouver Canucks, however, clarified that the rule means that goaltenders simply cannot serve as the on-ice captain during games; the honour can still be bestowed upon a goalie off-ice. So, when the Canucks needed a captain following Markus Naslund's departure, Roberto Luongo became the team's captain in September 2008 but never wore the captain's C on his jersey during a game. Alternate captain Willie Mitchell performed captain duties on-ice, primarily speaking to the officials. Luongo remained captain for two seasons, stepping down prior to the 2010-11 season following speculation that being captain in addition to being starting goaltender was too much pressure to take on. Luongo was drafted fourth overall in 1997 by the New York Islanders; at the time, this made him the highest selected goaltender in NHL draft history. This distinction was broken by his replacement on the New York Islanders, Rick DiPietro, who the club drafted first overall in 2000. Luongo also played for the Florida Panthers before being traded to Vancouver before the start of the 2006-07 season. In 2010, Luongo replaced all-star goalie Martin Brodeur as the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the Olympics; Canada won gold that year.

29. In 2007-08 and 2008-09, Detroit dangler Pavel Datsyuk scored the same amount of points. What is the number?

From Quiz NHL Players Stats

Answer: 97

In those two seasons, Dastyuk put up 97 points both times. Interestingly enough, the two seasons prior to that, he posted consecutive 87 point seasons, effectively making him a poster boy for consistency.

30. This former NHLer was loved by the ladies because of his name. His name was similar to that of the circulatory system's control unit and the symbol of Valentine's love. What was this player's name?

From Quiz Players With Valentine Themed Names

Answer: Gerry Hart

Gerry Hart was an undrafted player who played for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, Quebec Nordiques, and St. Louis Blues. He played in 730 career games, recording 179 points and a tremendous total of 1240 penalty minutes. Those penalty minutes would be equivalent to nearly 21 total games of penalty time. Players on the opposite teams never got to see Gerry Hart's loving heart.
