American Football Trivia Questions

1. This player was drafted in 1994 in the second round out of California State University Sonoma. Who is the greatest "A" player?

From Quiz
NFL ABCs (Best Players Alphabetically)

Answer: Larry Allen

Larry Allen was born in 1971 in Los Angeles, California. Larry was not academically eligible to play Division One college ball coming out of high school. Thus, he attended Butte Community College in Chico, California, and then transferred to Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California (a Div. Two school). He played in 203 NFL games. He won a single world championship, was a seven time All-Pro, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

2. It's hard to draft a list of tight ends without starting with Rob Gronkowski. Gronk had his first nine amazing seasons with one team before retiring for the first time. What team did he play for?

From Quiz 100 Years of NFL: The Tight Ends

Answer: New England Patriots

Robert James Gronkowski played his short but exciting nine-season career on the New England Patriots. Certainly playing with Tom Brady as your quarterback can elevate anybody's game, however, Gronk arguably made the position of tight end pop with flair and pizzazz with his amazing abilities of blocking and receiving. Rob Gronkowski was the first ever tight end to lead the league in receiving touchdowns (17 in 2011). He was also the first tight end to surpass 1000 yeards in a season (1327, also in 2011). He was elected to the Pro Bowl five times, and won the Super Bowl three times. When he retired, he held too many records to name. Even though I don't like the Patriots, I have to admit, Rob Gronkowski was one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game. *** Seeing how Gronk came out of retirement to join the Bucs, this entry will be adjusted after he re-retires ***

3. This Olympic Decathlon champion was the first president of the NFL. Who was this great all-around halfback?

From Quiz My Favorite NFL Players 2.0

Answer: Jim Thorpe

The National Football League (then known as the American Professional Football Conference) was not founded until 1920 when Thorpe was well over thirty years old, but he was still an outstanding pro player by all accounts. An effective running back, blocking back, and defensive back, Thorpe's outstanding skill as a pro player was his kicking; in pre-game exhibitions, he was known to kick field goals from midfield, and informal accounts credit him with a 99-yard punt in a 1923 game. He is a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jim Thorpe was my favorite old-school athlete when I was a kid - I drove my family crazy. If you want to read more about this superlative American athlete, check out Sally Jenkins' fine write up in the July 2012 issue of 'Smithsonian'.

4. Later officially named Super Bowl I, this 1967 game saw the Green Bay Packers defeat which team to take the first Super Bowl crown?

From Quiz Soup-er Bowls

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The NFL Champion Packers went 12-2 and met the AFL Champion Chiefs who went 11-2-1. The Packers defeated the Chiefs 35-10. Packer quarterback Bart Starr was the MVP for his passing of 250 yards and throwing three touchdowns.

5. Who was the first defensive lineman to total 20 sacks in a season?

From Quiz NFL: All Mixed Up

Answer: Mark Gastineau

Mark Gastineau was a New York Jet in 1984 when he recorded 22 sacks. He led the league twice in sacks in 1983 and 1984. Michael Strahan of the New York Giants broke Mark's record, by compiling 22.5 sacks in 2001.

6. Which team went a perfect 16-0 in the 2007 regular season?

From Quiz National Football League for Dummies!

Answer: New England Patriots

2007 was known as 'Spygate', when the NFL accused the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick of some questionable video taping of other teams. The Patriots went all the way to the Super Bowl, but lost to the Giants.

7. Later to be known as Super Bowl I, the Green Bay Packers were all over this team, and allowed them only one touchdown in their 35-10 romp in 1967. Which team was on the embarrassing end?

From Quiz Super Bowl Losers

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The second quarter was the only time that the Chiefs scored, one seven-yard TD pass from Len Dawson, and a 31-yard field goal by Mike Mercer. The Chiefs mustered only four first downs on the ground. The Packers' QB Bart Starr was the MVP of the game.

8. This team began its NFL endeavors in 1976 under head coach John McKay and Steve Spurrier as their quarterback. Which team was this that didn't win a game in their first season?

From Quiz Pigskins for Dummies

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs finished out their first season by going 0-14, which included being shutout five times. 1977 wasn't much better, as they lost their first 12 games of the season before finishing up at 2-12. 0-26 was not a streak for Florida fans to admire. The Bucs' first winning season was in 1979, going 10-6.

9. In 1964, this Minnesota Viking great ran a fumble all the way to the end zone, but it was the wrong one!

From Quiz The NFL Positions

From Quiz NFL ABCs (Best Players Alphabetically)

13. Shannon Sharpe was an amazing tight end that played most of his career for the Broncos. His older brother was an equally amazing wide receiver for the Packers. What was his brother's name?

From Quiz 100 Years of NFL: The Tight Ends

Answer: Sterling

Shannon Sharpe had an amazing 14-season career, two with the Baltimore Ravens and the rest with the Denver Broncos. A hall-of-famer, 3-time Super Bowl champion, 8-time Pro Bowl selection, he was most proud of the fact that he was Sterling Sharpe's little brother. In fact, when he won his first Super Bowl in 1998 with the Broncos, Shannon gifted his ring to Sterling citing the fact that he owed everything in his life to his older brother and his grandmother. Sadly, Sterling's great career was cut short due to an injury and he never got to win a Super Bowl.

14. Running back Jerome Bettis- What was his popular nickname that reflected his mobility and immense strength?

From Quiz My Favorite NFL Players

Jerome Abram "The Bus" Bettis was one of the NFL's premier running backs from 1993-2005. He played two years for the Rams while they transitioned from Los Angeles to playing in St. Louis. He then moved on to play nine years for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His nickname is derived from his ability to carry multiple men on his back while remaining upright during a run, in essence giving them a 'bus ride'. Throughout his career, Bettis was known for having powerful legs as well as sure hands. Upon retirement he had scored 94 touchdowns and 13,662 rushing yards. Defenders admitted that his running style made him very difficult to tackle. When he retired in 2005, he was listed as the sixth-leading rusher of all time.

15. Who was the first team to score 50 points in a Super Bowl?

From Quiz Soup-er Bowls

Answer: San Francisco 49ers

16. The first Super Bowl occurred on January 15, 1967, pitting the Green Bay Packers against the Kansas City Chiefs. Which NFL team was the first to lose three Super Bowls?

From Quiz NFL: All Mixed Up

17. Two great San Francisco 49er quarterbacks were Steve Young and Joe Montana. Young played his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 49ers. Montana played for the 49ers, then retired which other team?

From Quiz National Football League for Dummies!

1985 and 1986 found Young with the Bucs before joining the 49ers for 13 seasons. Steve retired in 1999. Montana began his career with the 49ers in 1979. 14 seasons later he was a Kansas City Chief, and retired as a Chief in 1994.

18. In Super Bowl III, QB Joe Namath stepped out on the ledge and guaranteed victory for his New York Jets. Which team lost to the Jets, 16-7?

From Quiz Super Bowl Losers

Answer: Baltimore Colts

Although Namath was the MVP, the Jets' defense shutdown the Colts' offense when it counted, allowing only one touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Jets controlled the ball for 36:10 compared to the Colts having it 23:50.

19. Which quarterback wore the jersey of the San Francisco 49ers from 1979-1992?

From Quiz Pigskins for Dummies

Answer: Joe Montana

Montana took the snaps while Bill Walsh made his head coaching debut in 1979 also. Joe led the team to Super Bowl XIX over the Dolphins, XXIII in a win over the Bengals, and XXIV over the Broncos. What a receiving corps that Montana had with the 49ers with names like Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, Roger Craig, Wendell Tyler, and the infamous Jerry Rice. 23. What position takes the hand-offs and also can move out as receiver?

From Quiz The NFL Positions

Answer: Running Back

24. This player was drafted in 1978 in the first round out of the University of Texas. Who is the greatest "C" player?

From Quiz NFL ABCs (Best Players Alphabetically)

Answer: Earl Campbell

He never won an NFL championship, he was a five time ALL-Pro, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.

25. Charlie Sanders played ten brilliant seasons for the Detroit Lions from 1968 to 1977. Why did he choose to end his career?

From Quiz 100 Years of NFL: The Tight Ends

Answer: Knee injury

Charlie Sanders was a great tight end playing all ten of his seasons as a Detroit Lion. In his rookie season, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl, and he would be chosen another six times throughout the rest of his career. A receiver with reliable hands, Sanders was also a superb run-blocker. In the voting for the 1970 and 1971 All-Pro teams, not only was Sanders chosen, but he had the most votes over all other players. Sanders, playing in an preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons in 1976, got a knee injury that would end his career in the pros. He switched to radio broadcasting, tried his hand at coaching, and eventually returned to broadcasting. He returned to the Lions as an assistant personnel director and passed away at age 68 from cancer, a tumor found, ironically, in his knee, the same knee that had ended his career. He had nine kids with his wife, Georgianna, who he married three times; the last time was six days before his passing.

27. Which speedster was the first to rush for over 200 yards in the big game?

From Quiz Soup-er Bowls

Answer: Timmy Smith

Smith was a rookie running back for the Redskins in the 1987 season. Super Bowl XXII which pitted the Redskins against the Broncos was a slugfest. After John Elway and the Broncos opened up a 10-0 lead, the Redskins scored 42 unanswered points for a 42-10 victory. Smith rushed for 204 yards, but Washington quarterback Doug Williams was still voted the MVP.
