Super Mario Bros. 2 Trivia Questions

1. How many playable characters can you choose from in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz
Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: Four & 4

"When Mario opened a door after climbing a long stair in his dream, another world spread before him and he heard a voice call for help to be freed from a spell. After awakening, Mario went to a cave nearby and to his surprise he saw exactly what he saw in his dream..." And that starts the story of "Super Mario Bros. 2", presented as though it were a stage play with four leading characters-- Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool. All four characters have their own quirks with different rankings for their speed, jump power, and strength. Mario, for instance, is well-balanced while Luigi jumps higher, Toad is quicker, and Princess Toadstool can float in midair.

2. Who is the final boss in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Wart

Wart is the final boss of "Super Mario Bros. 2", and is known as Mamu in Japan. He invaded the World of Dreams and kidnapped the race known was "Subcon". It is up to Mario and his friends to save the day!

3. What graphical element or motif of "Super Mario Bros. 2" explicitly references the original story-book plot of "Doki Doki Panic"?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: The World Screen at the start of each level

The plot of Doki Doki panic involves a story-book, captured twins, monkeys, and a family intent on rescuing the twins. The family's pet monkey Rusa gives a story book to twins Poki and Piki. The twins fight and ending up tearing out the last page of the book. Mamu (Wart) magically reaches out his giant hand from the book and captures the twins, causing their parents, Mama and Papa, and their siblings, Imagin and Lina, to jump into the book to rescue them. The world screen that tells you what level you are on is based on this story-book plot that Nintendo removed. In "Doki Doki Panic" there are page numbers included which are not present in the conversion. These world screens are clearly pages from the book in the original plot, although Nintendo completely abandoned that conception for "Super Mario Bros. 2".

4. What moving boss leaves a slight space behind him that those with the jumping power can use to stand behind him and not be hurt?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: Wart

He's big. He's ugly. He's green. He's also the king. At the end of "Super Mario Bros. 2", you have the final confrontation with... Wart? Nintendo relieved Bowser of final villain duties for "Super Mario Bros 2". The Dream Machine, three horns that have the power to make vegetables out of thin air (the solution to world's hunger!), expel vegetables for you to throw at Wart. Six hits and he's done. If you have Luigi or Princess Toadstool, you can actually jump behind Wart and avoid the bubbles he froths from his mouth, though you have to jump over him to get another vegetable. Still, back in the late 1980s when the game came out, that's how my brother and myself would always beat that evil master of dreams, Wart.

5. How many total levels are there in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Twenty

The first six worlds have three levels. The last world has only two levels, bringing the grand total to twenty levels.

6. When Nintendo localized "Super Mario Bros. 2" for American and the PAL regions, they left the overall levels themselves alone. However, they actually made a small change by removing a platform to what level?

From Quiz Let's Play 01: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 1

Answer: 7-2

In 7-2, in the cloud section there is a portion of the stage where you must go back and forth on stationary cloud platforms that are stacked on top of one another in order to get to a ladder that has a column blocking access. In "Doki Doki Panic", there is an additional cloud platform, with a small column with a Snifit sitting on top. The most probable reason Nintendo removed this platform was even with the Mario and Toad character a super jump could completely bypass the cloud section and the player could simply jump over the column to get to the blocked off ladder.

7. Known as Catherine in Japan, what new character was introduced in this game?

From Quiz Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: Birdo

The first time you meet Birdo will be at the end of World 1-1 when she stands between you and the Mask Gate. For early instances of Birdo, you'll face the pink version that'll fire eggs at you at a semi-regular rate. Your goal is to jump on the eggs, pluck them from the air, and use them as ammunition to defeat her (it'll take three). Later versions of Birdo will appear red or green and shoot fire in addition to eggs (or just fire for the green ones). Every World has a Birdo, but not every level.

8. What new boss did Nintendo add to "Super Mario Bros. 2" that was not originally in "Doki Doki Panic"?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: Clawgrip

The final boss of World 5 was a third encounter with Mouser in "Doki Doki Panic". This Mouser takes six hits to defeat, whereas Mamu/Wart only takes 4. Like "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" with the introduction of the boss Gooma as the Fifth Palace Boss, when Nintendo brought the game to the western markets, they replaced added a new boss not present in the original version. In "Super Mario Bros. 2", the player encounters Clawgrip, a crab that throws rocks, as the main boss of that world. Oddly enough, the manual states that he grows suddenly, which does not occur in-game.

9. "Super Mario Bros. 2" has an enemy roster featuring Shyguys, Beezos, Bomb Ombs, Ostros, Birdo, Snifits, and Tweeters. What enemy on that list has gone on to feature in "Super Mario Bros. 3", "Super Mario World", and "New Super Mario Bros. Wii"?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: Bomb Ombs

Shyguys and Bomb Ombs have gone on to be main staples in the Mario series. The other enemies mentioned in that list have not really be reused. The bosses of "Super Mario Bros. 2", Mouser, Fryguy, Clawgrip, Triclyde, and Wart have not made an appearance since that game.

10. How many Warps are there?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Four

There are four warps total. To gain access to a warp zone, you throw a magic potion on the ground, enter the door into Subcon, and go down a pipe. World 1-3 warps to World 4, World 3-1 warps to World 5, World 4-2 warps to World 6, and World 5-3 warps to World 7.

11. Nintendo made several animation changes to further refine its port of "Super Mario Bros. 2". What was one item NOT given new animation?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: The Ice Platforms

Nintendo newly animated several portions of the game during the game's conversion from "Doki Doki Panic". The cherries and grass wave in the wind and the cloud platforms now have small movements. The spikes in the in-door levels were subtly changed. The Albatoss enemy has eight frames of animation (although due to a glitch the player only sees seven) instead of the original two frames. Most notably, the Waterfalls were significantly slowed down, probably to reduce the risk of siezures. The ocean in World 4 was also animated. The quicksand also had some animation changes as well. The conveyor belts in 7-2 were reworked.

12. Birdo, according to the original game manual of "Super Mario Bros. 2", thinks he is a girl. What is Birdo's name in Japan?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: Catherine

His backstory has since been retconned by Nintendo, although Birdo is still notable for introducing gender issues into video games all the way back in 1988. The original game manual said that he thought he was a girl and would rather be known as Birdetta. Subsequent printings of the game manual cut the Birdetta line but still said he wished he was a girl. In the Japanese version of the manual Nintendo states Birdo's name is Catherine but he would rather be known as Cassie

13. What is the minimum amount of levels you must play to get to Wart?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Ten

You can beat Wart in ten levels by use of the Warp zones. You will play World 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, warp to World 4-1, 4-2, then warp to World 6 and play the last five levels of the game.

14. The original instruction manual included a picture of the original sprite of what enemy?

From Quiz Let's Play 01: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 1

Answer: Phanto

I remember my parents buying this game for me and being puzzled why Phanto looked different in the manual than he actually appears in the game. The reason is Nintendo published the "Doki Doki Panic" sprite in the manual, rather than the sprite that actually appears in the game. Phanto in "Doki Doki Panic" has small eyes and he is frowning. He does not look nearly as menacing as he does in "Super Mario Bros. 2". The game manual also includes pictures of the Magic Jar and the Heart sprite from "Doki Doki Panic".

15. In what world did Nintendo rework a level by removing ground in order to make accessing a warp pipe more difficult?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: World 5

In World 5-3, at the start of the level there is a pipe on a platform above the player. In "Doki Doki Panic", there is an extended ledge the player can use to easily access the pipe. In "Super Mario Bros. 2", Nintendo removed part of that ledge in order to make the player have to get at the pipe another way. There are warp pipes in each world listed in the answers.

16. How many different colored Birdos appear in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: Four

There are four colors of Birdo. The first is Pink Birdo, and fires eggs. The second is Red Birdo, who first appears in 2-2, and shoots eggs and fire. The third is Grey Birdo, and he first appears in 5-1. He fires only fireballs and must be defeated by mushroom blocks. The last is Green Birdo, first appearing in 6-1. Like the Grey Birdo, fires only fireballs and must be defeated by throwing mushroom blocks at him.

17. What level features a short cut by stacking mushroom blocks on clouds?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: 3-1

3-1 features a large waterfall. At top of the waterfall there is another portion of the level that features several mushroom blocks, enemies, and a series of clouds to the left. By stacking the mushroom blocks on these clouds you can jump over to a secret door. If you stack the blocks on the first cloud and have Luigi you can simply jump over, though on the other three characters you will need to do more.

18. How many times does Birdo appear in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Let's Play 01: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 1

Answer: Eighteen

Birdo appears as someone you must defeat in 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 7-1, and 7-2. He also appears in 4-3, but rather than defeating him you must ride his egg across an otherwise impassable waterfall. 2-2 features our first red Birdo. 5-3 and 6-3 are notable for making you fight Birdo in addition to those World's perspective bosses, as 1-3, 2-3, and 3-3 do not feature Birdo fights. 4-1 is the only level (that does not feature a World Boss) to not have Birdo. 7-2, the end level, is also unique as there are TWO red Bridos, though you only must defeat one and can completely ignore the other. 7-2 also features the only Birdo that has is holding a key rather than a Crystal Ball.

19. At the end of each level, how can you collect one ups?

From Quiz Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: Slot Machine & The Slot Machine

The user must collect coins throughout each level in order to have a chance to play the slot machine in between levels. The amount of coins you collect during the level will determine how many tries you will have at the slot machine.

20. It takes how many hits to defeat Mouser when you meet him, again, at the end of World 3?

From Quiz Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: Five & 5

World 3 is a world of waterfalls and caves, and you'll need to navigate your way up and around seemingly-impossible natural settings to get through to the other end of this set of levels. Getting to the final room of the labyrinth at the end of World 3-3 will put you back in front of Mouser, the boss of World 1-3, and the battle will unfold very similarly save for a few details. Firstly, the room will have a couple of added obstacles in the form of deadly foes. Secondly, you'll need to hit Mouser with five bombs instead of three. In later ports of this game, Mouser is replaced by a new boss, a robot version of Birdo.

21. In World 7-1, Nintendo removed an extended platform, column, and grey snifit. In "Doki Doki Panic", you could use that extra platform to do what?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: Jump over a column to get to a ladder

The middle of 7-1 is constructed as a small gauntlet. There is a column that blocks a ladder the player must get too. To get to the ladder, the player must navigate several cloud platforms resting on top of each other. This creates for some tricky platforming, because if the player jumps at all, he or she is taken up a level and loses progress, as the player needs to get to the lowest level and move right to access the ladder. The player must be strategic as there are enemies that must be dealt with. In "Doki Doki Panic", the player can completely bypass this cloud platform platform challenge by using an extended platform and powersquatting to use the special jump that gives each character additional height and simply jumping over the column to get to the ladder. Oddly enough, when the player climbs of the ladder to the next section of the level, "Super Mario Bros. 2" moves the ladder to the left of its original location.

22. What world does the Red Snifit appear in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: 3-3

According to the game manual, the Red Sniffit is "a member of the "8-bits." He wears a mask and spits the bullets of evil dreams from his mouth." What is notable about the Red Sniffit is he is truly alone in the World of Dreams. He appears only once, in World 3-3, where he walks off a high platform onto lower platforms.

23. According to the game manual, this minor baddie is a devil who haunts the dreams of NES players.

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Ninji - 1

The game manual makes a distinction between the Ninjis. The first Ninji, the one who chases you, is the devil who haunts the dreams of NES players. The description of "Ninji-2" is simply that he jumps up and down in the same place and is a strange guy.

24. After defeating the game, Nintendo introduces us to the cast of characters. However, there are some errors in this list. What enemy was incorrectly given the name Birdo instead of their actual name?

From Quiz Let's Play 01: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 1

Answer: Ostro

There were numerous errors in the Cast of Characters section of "Super Mario Bros. 2". Ostro, an ostrich that Shyguys ride, are given the name Birdo, and Birdo is labeled Ostro. Personally I believe this was a localization error, as the error was repeated in the game manual itself. Strangely enough, when Nintendo released "Super Mario Allstars" for the Super Nintendo, they did not correct this error, though they did correct it in the "Super Mario Advance" release. I remember back in the late 1980s all us gamers thought Birdo had two names, Birdo and Ostro, as Nintendo Power referred to Birdo as Birdo, not Ostro. The other errors in the "Cast of Characters" are typographical. Hoopster is spelled Hoopstar, Tryclyde's name appears as Triclyde, and Clawgrip's name is "Clawglip".

25. How can you obtain the Starman in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

From Quiz Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: Collecting cherries

Collecting cherries is the only way to obtain a Starman in "Super Mario Bros. 2". Once enough cherries are obtained, a star will float onto the screen. If the user is able to get the Starman, they are able to become invincible for a limited amount of time.

26. In World 6-3, Nintendo added three cloud platforms the player must jump on when using the short cut at the start of the level to get to the pyramid. What is the primary practical effect of this change?

From Quiz From "Doki Doki Panic" to "Super Mario Bros 2"!

Answer: It makes the shortcut far less obvious in "Super Mario Bros 2"

In "Doki Doki Panic", the door is clearly visible if you scroll to the left of the final pyramid the player must enter to fight Tryclyde. There is no way to access that door and would likely confuse the player. The door is simply meant as a short cut, and by adding the platforms and removing the door from being easily seen Nintendo made the shortcut much more well hidden. To access the short cut in both versions, at the start of the level the player must be swallowed by quick sand and then hit the jump button continually as the player travels under a wall to get to a hidden door.

27. According to the game manual, which the four major bosses in "Super Mario Bros 2." was originally an outsider to the World of Dreams and impressed Wart with his cunning?

From Quiz Let's Play 43: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 3

Answer: Tryclyde

Wart apparently brought in some outside help when he conquered the World of Dreams. The story is he created monsters with the Dream Machine. However, here is what the manual says about Tryclyde: "He was once an outsider, but now he is one of Wart's helpers since he impressed Wart with his cunning brain and offensive capabilities which are three times normal strength."

28. According to the game manual, what character grows suddenly?

From Quiz Let's Play 07: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 2

Answer: Clawgrip

According to the manual, Clawgrip "grows suddenly and is surprisingly skilled at throwing rocks". It is possible this refers to some gameplay concept of Clawgrip that never got into the final game, as Clawgrip does not change sizes in the actual game.

29. According to the game manual, what enemy was the original inhabitant of the World of Dreams?

From Quiz Let's Play 01: "Super Mario Bros. 2" Part 1

Answer: Albatros

The Albatros, the only flying bird in "Super Mario Bros. 2", appears to be Subcon's natural resident before the Wart invaded. Here is the game manual entry related to the Albatros. "He used to be the only resident in the world of dreams. Now, by order of Wart, he works as a carrier of Bob-Ombs." In "Doki Doki Panic" he only has two frames of animation, making him appear to fly much faster. For the "Super Mario Bros. 2" conversion Nintendo added three more frames of animation, bring the total to five. Birdo, Wart, Shyguy

30. Other than defeating enemies, what other purpose do the bombs serve?

From Quiz Super Mario Bros. 2

Answer: To bomb walls or bricks

The user is able to bomb walls and bricks in order to move through to other stages of a level. In earlier levels of the game, it is easy for the user to blow up walls and bricks as they can usually just drop a bomb and move out of the way. In more difficult levels, the user often has to stand on top of a ledge and time the bomb so that it will reach the walls before exploding.
