Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

90% of Madagascar's wildlife, including many species of lemurs, reptiles, birds, fish, insects, snails, and more, are found nowhere else on Earth.

2. Which of these mammal names refers to a feline that was once actively hunted for its beautiful fur?

Answer: ocelot

The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) is a medium-sized cat (up to 1 m/39 in, tail not included) native to the Americas, where it inhabits areas with dense vegetation cover. In the US, it is found in southern Texas and Arizona. Unfortunately, before hunting of this cat was outlawed, the striking markings that characterize its fur made it a target for the fur trade.

At present, the ocelot is classified by IUCN as Least Concern, though habitat loss and poaching still threaten the species' survival in parts of its range. Like other wild cats, ocelots are occasionally kept as pets; famed Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí owned one, named Babou. All the other mammals are ungulates and herbivores: the oryx is a large antelope, the okapi a relative of the giraffe, and the onager a wild ass.

5. Often noted as the land dwelling animal with the highest (normal) blood pressure this animal has a heart weighing over 25 pounds. When comparisons are made this animal is said to have an unusually "strong heart", too. What animal?

Answer: Giraffe

It is the giraffe; an animal anomaly on many accounts. With an adult height that often reaches over 18 feet (5 meters), the giraffe needs a very "strong" heart to circulate its blood through its body. For example, the heart rate of a giraffe can be five times that of an elephant; those ratios can increase when compared after activity (imagine being pursued by a predator). One compensation (overly simplified) is the giraffe has multiple valves in its neck to prevent blood from flowing backwards. Yet, this same intense blood pressure rate would tear the veins in the legs of many other animals but the giraffe has evolved with a skin that is tight and extremely tough.

Although some animals, again, for example the elephant, have larger and/or heavier hearts and/or pump more blood volume than the giraffe, the giraffe's heart is much stronger - a measurement of muscle fiber and density to allow its extremes. Nature is so amazing!

6. What sort of animal is a macaque?

Answer: monkey

Macaques are a group of Old World monkeys and, apart from Man, are the most widespread type of primate. Twenty-two types have been identified, including the famous barbary "apes" of Gibraltar - who are monkeys, rather than apes, even though they don't have tails!

Question by player Dando
7. Which of the following birds is unlikely to be seen feeding from a bird table in a suburban garden in London?

Answer: Osprey

An osprey is a large fish-eating eagle, and the chances of seeing one in the wild in London are slim (unless it is very lost or has escaped from a zoo or specialist aviary). The UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reports that the blackbird, starling and house sparrow are the three most commonly-seen garden birds in the UK, according to its 2010 "Big Garden Birdwatch".

8. Which of the following choices is the best definition for a capon?

Answer: a castrated male chicken

A capon refers to a male chicken, or rooster, that has been castrated. This action is performed because it increases the quality of the bird's flesh for human consumption.

9. Which bird has the nickname 'storm cock' because of its ability to sing in strong winds?

Answer: mistle thrush

The mistle thrush is a bird native to northern parts of Africa, Asia and large parts of Europe. The male of the species has a loud and far- carrying song which can traverse even through rainy and windy conditions, thus earning the nickname 'storm cock'.

10. On a turtle, the underside of a carapace (the shell) is called what?

Answer: Plastron

The plastron is the flat underside part of a turtle's shell located under its abdomen. The plastron is made from bone, making it an exoskeleton. In some species of turtles, the male has a concave plastron and the female a convex one to facilitate mating.
