Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Guinness World Records, which of these is the smallest breed of dog in the world?

Answer: Chihuahua

The tiny Chihuahua is a pint-sized dog with a huge personality. These dogs which are native to Mexico have also been recognised as the smallest breed of dog in the world by the American Kennel Club (AKC). They weigh on average 1.8 to 2.7kg and are mainly tan, white or black in colour.
2. Kitti's hog-nosed bat is the smallest mammal in the world but this little feller is the smallest marsupial. What is he?

Answer: Long-tailed planigale

This small nocturnal mammal which is native mainly to the northern regions of Australia is slightly larger than an adult human thumb. Its total body length (excluding tail) is approximately 5cm and it weighs on average five to six grams. It may look small and cute, but this carnivorous little bruiser can sink its teeth ferociously into tasty morsels like insects and lizards by foraging in tiny cracks in the earth.
3. The falabella miniature horse is one of the smallest breeds of horse in the world. From which country does it originate?

Answer: Argentina

At approximately eight hands high, the miniature falabella breed of horse is used mainly for show and never for riding. Their sweet temperaments make them ideal family pets and they have a useful quality around the house - as an equine 'lawn mower' to save on the electric bill! The were bred in Argentina over a hundred years ago at a ranch just outside Buenos Aires by the Falabella family. They are descended from a thoroughbred/Shetland pony mix.
4. The tiny fennec fox is native to the Sahara desert in North Africa. What does the Arabic word 'fenec' translate in to English?

Answer: Fox

The fennec (Vulpes zerda) is the smallest breed of fox in the world. The name is taken from the Arabic word which literally means 'fox'. It is a sociable animal, living alongside large packs of other foxes in the dry regions of the Sahara desert, their large ears allowing them to cool off in the heat of the day. They can bark to alert their pack, purr like a kitten when content, or growl in anger or fear. Weighing approximately one kilogram, these small omnivore creatures feed off rodents, birds and plants.
5. Believed to be the smallest snake in the world, how long does the Barbados threadsnake grow in length?

Answer: 10cm

Discovered in 2008 on the Caribbean island of Barbados, the minute Barbados threadsnake is believed to be the smallest snake in the world. Growing up to 10cm in length, they are also known as the 'spaghetti' snake due to their size. Although blind, they slither around and burrow under the soil to feed on the larvae of termites and ants.
6. The critically endangered Egyptian tortoise is also known by what common name?

Answer: Kleinmann's tortoise

The herbivorous Egyptian tortoise was discovered in 1883 by French botanist and Egyptologist, Louis Lortet. He named the species Testudo kleinmanni. Alternatively called Kleinmann's tortoise or Leith's tortoise, the adult can grow between 90mm (male) and 128mm (female) long. The shell is a dull yellow/straw colour which serves it well as camouflage in the arid terrain of North Africa. Believed to be the smallest tortoise in the world, it has become nearly extinct in its native Egypt due to habitat loss, and can still be found in some coastal regions of Libya.
7. What is the smallest primate in the world?

Answer: Pygmy marmoset

Native to the rain forests of South America, the pygmy marmoset only weighs up to 100g and can grow between 10-15cm in length. It is usually a golden brown colour with distinctive black ring markings on its tail. Their sharp claws enable them to cling to trees and their necks can turn 180 degrees to allow them to scan for predators. They feed on tree gum by gnawing into the bark and licking out the sap.
8. This small reptile called the Brookesia micra chameleon is native to which island famous for its ring-tailed lemur?

Answer: Madagascar

Madagascar is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and none more so than the ring-tailed lemur. The miniscule Brookesia micra chameleon is native to Nosy Hara, an uninhabited island at the north of the main island. The average body length of both male and female is 30cm. The dwarf chameleons live amongst leaf litter on the forest floor during the day and they climb up at night where they sleep under the canopy of trees. They are at risk from habitat disturbance as the area where they reside is known for illegal tree felling.
9. Which amphibian has in excess of 5,000 species worldwide, with one of the smallest being Paedophryne amanuensis?

Answer: Frog

Paedophryne amanuensis is a tiny frog measuring approximately 7.7mm in length, making it one of the smallest known vertebrates. They live on the island of New Guinea, surrounded by leaf litter on the forest floor which makes them hard to detect. Discovered by scientists in 2012, National Geographic proclaimed them to be "a beast the size of a housefly".
10. The munchkin and kinkalow are known to be small felines but they are not the smallest of the domestic cat breeds. Which cat in the image shown can claim this title?

Answer: Singapura

The Singapura is a petite little cat with light brown short fur, once feral and native to the gutters of Singapore before being singled out for breeding. With large eyes and distinctive markings on its face, this friendly little feline weighs between 1.8 to 3.6kg, making it the smallest and lightest known breed of domestic cat. They are playful, energetic, and love to climb, making them the purrrfect pet!
