1. Made famous by both book and film, what breed of dog is Marley?

Answer: Labrador

"Marley and Me" by John Grogan portrays life with a dog who has his own ideas about life and how it should be lived. What shines through is the love and devotion that Marley has for his family and that his family have for him.
I defy anyone not to cry at the end.
2. Buster dictated his diaries to his owner, a British politician. Who is he?

Answer: Roy Hattersley

Roy Hattersley adopted Buster when he was six months old. Buster started dictating his diaries after he came to the public attention by attacking a goose that belonged to Queen Elizabeth II. From these diaries it is clear that Buster considers that he adopted Mr Hattersley, and from time to time "The Man", as he calls him, is something of a trial to him.
3. In 1966, Pickles became famous for finding what stolen object?

Answer: The Jules Rimet Trophy

In 1966 the Football World Cup was held in England. Four months prior to kick off, the Jules Rimet Trophy was on display at Westminster Hall when it was stolen. The thieves ignored several million pounds worth of rare stamps also on display. A ransom was demanded, but this turned out to be a hoax.

A week later Pickles, a black and white mongrel, was out for his daily walk with his owner, David Corbet, when he found the cup wrapped in newspaper hidden under a garden hedge. The thief was never caught.
4. In 1960 Strelka and Belka were the first dogs to do what?

Answer: Return from earth orbit alive

The first dog to go into space was Laika, but sadly she did not survive re-entry. In August 1960 Strelka and Belka were in a Sputnik that orbited earth 18 times and returned to earth with the two dogs safe and sound. This was the first time that any dog came back from space alive. Strelka later had puppies, one of which was given to American President John Kennedy.
5. A dog looking into the sound horn of a wind up gramophone has been a famous advertising logo for many years. What is the name of this dog?

Answer: Nipper

Nipper, so named because of his habit of trying to bite visitors on the leg, did not become famous until after his death. His owner painted a picture of him looking at the sound horn on an early phonograph, and a modified version of this became the trademark of His Masters Voice and is still used by them to this day. Nipper himself died in 1895 and was buried in a park in Kingston on Thames, England.

A bank now occupies the site but there is a brass plaque on the building commemorating the fact that Nipper lies beneath the building.
6. Which American president owned a dog who almost caused an international incident by ripping the trousers of the French Ambassador?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt owned four dogs, amongst them Pete, a pit bull terrier. At a White House function Pete became a little over enthusiastic about greeting people and and ripped the French Ambassador's trousers.
7. The killing of which dog led to the famous "Eulogy on the Dog"?

Answer: Old Drum

Old Drum was an American foxhound who was shot and killed by a sheep farmer when he strayed on to his land. His owner, Mr Burden, sued the farmer for compensation and George Vest took on the case. After announcing he would win, or apologise to every dog in Missouri, Mr Vest stood up in front of the jury to present his closing argument, and instead of concentrating on the evidence gave his now famous "Eulogy on the Dog".

He won his case. A statue of Old Drum now stands in front of the courthouse in Warrensburg, Missouri. George Vest went on to become a Senator for Missouri.
8. What was Adolf Hitler's favourite dog called?

Answer: Blondi

German shepherd Blondi was Hitler's favourite dog and accompanied him everywhere. She was with him in the bunker, and he killed her with a cyanide pill before taking one himself.
9. Shana, a part wolf part German shepherd, kept her 81 year old owners alive when they were trapped by what event?

Answer: Massive storm

Mr & Mrs Fertig live in the Enchanted Forest Wildlife Sanctuary, NY. In December 2006 they were trapped outside when a massive storm brought trees down and blocked their way to their home. Shana dug a tunnel under the fallen trees to the couple's home using only her teeth and claws, a feat which took her some two hours.

She then dragged them along the tunnel into the house and laid on top of them to keep them warm until the fire department arrived the next day. She was later given a bravery award.
10. What did Bobby the Wonder Dog do to earn his name?

Answer: Walked from Indiana to Oregon

On a family trip to Indiana Bobby somehow became separated from his owners. After searching everywhere for him the family were forced to return to Oregon without him, convinced they would never see him again. Six months later he turned up on their doorstep completely exhausted and showing signs of having walked all the way. To do so he crossed plains, desert and mountains in the middle of winter.

He lived for another four years and after his death Rin Tin Tin laid a wreath on his grave.
