Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This breed's coat is more like human hair than animal, making them hypoallergenic. They are also mostly under 7 lbs. at full size. Which breed is it?

Answer: Yorkshire Terrier

Also known as "Yorkies", these dogs have a lot of spunk. Despite their small size, they bark a lot and don't often back down from bigger breeds.

Ozmilion Mystification was the first Yorkie to win "Best in Show" at a major dog show. That win was in 1997 at Crufts which, at the time, was the world's largest dog show.
2. 101 of these dogs, known for hanging around firehouses, were featured in a Disney movie. Which breed is it?

Answer: Dalmatian

Dalmatians have a genetic problem that causes them to go deaf more often than most other breeds of domestic dogs. At some point in their life, about 70 percent of the breed will have some type of hearing problem.
3. What type of dog was Lassie?

Answer: Rough collie

Lassie, from the books, movies and TV series, is a rough collie. There are four different coat colors for official rough collies, which are sable and white, tricolour, blue merle, and white. The sable and white color is the most common for the breed.
4. Despite its small size, which of these breeds, shown in the photo, is used as a herd dog?

Answer: Corgi

Corgi, which is Welsh, translates to "dwarf dog", which describes the miniature dogs quite well. The breed is often used as herding dogs for cattle and other animals. There are two slightly different breeds of Corgi, the Pembroke and the Cardigan. The Pembroke variety is generally a bit smaller than the Cardigan counterparts.
5. Which breed, among those listed, was the first of its kind to be recognized by the Kennel Club?

Answer: Smooth fox terrier

The Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1875. There are several breeds of terrier, but the smooth fox terrier was the first to be listed.

Initially thought to be descended from the same ancestors as the wire fox terrier, it took until the 1980s for experts to realize they were completely separate breeds, not variations of one breed.
6. Among the breeds listed, which has a pushed in nose and wrinkled face?

Answer: English bulldog

Also known simply as a bulldog or a British bulldog, the breed traces its roots parallel with English culture in the 1700s and 1800s. Prime Minister Winston Churchill was referred to as a "bulldog" for his defiant personality.

The Bulldog Club of America was formed in 1890.
7. Which of the following breeds traces its heritage to China?

Answer: Pekingese

The Pekingese, or "Lion Dog", is a toy dog breed with history stemming from ancient China. The breed was named for its resemblance to Chinese Guardian Lion statues.

Despite its appearance, genetically the species is one of the domestic breeds closest to the wolf.
8. Also known as a wiener dog, what breed was developed to hunt badgers?

Answer: Dachshund

With their short legs and good hunting noses, dachshunds were specifically developed to hunt badgers. The breed is also called the badger dog in England.

A mini version of the breed was also developed to hunt smaller ground dwelling animals.

Based on cave painting and etchings, the breed is thought to trace its roots all the way back to ancient Egypt.
9. Which of these breeds is used as a seeing-eye dog more than the others?

Answer: Golden retriever

The golden retriever was first developed as a hunting breed. The dog, with a gentle temperament, was later discovered to be able to be trained to lead the blind.

For proper health, the breed needs about two hours a day of playtime and exercise.

The Golden Retriever Club of America was founded in 1938.
10. What dog, used on farms, looks like a miniature collie?

Answer: Shetland sheepdog

The Shetland sheepdog was originally known as a Shetland collie but, due to how close they resembled rough collies, the breed name was changed.

A Shetland named Mickey was the star of the Children's TV show "Mickey's Farm".

The breed was developed to help on farms as a herding dog.
