Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. True or false, if you want a snake as a pet, it is better to have a wild caught specimen than a captive bred one?

Answer: False

Wild caught specimens are more prone to parasites and diseases, harder to tame and can be very difficult to get to accept pre-killed food.
2. A good snake for a beginner would be what?

Answer: Corn Snake

Corn Snakes make great pets for beginners, they are easy to care for, easy to handle and generally good feeders.
3. True or false, it is best to keep King Snakes on their own?

Answer: True

King Snakes will eat other snakes, and so need to be housed alone.
4. How can you tell if a snake is about to shed its skin?

Answer: It will have milky coloured eyes

Before a snake sheds, its eyes become very cloudy looking, and its body will appear very dull (although on some colour snakes this is not as obvious). Snakes also become quite inactive prior to shedding and will not take food.
5. Which type of snake will 'play dead' if it feels threatened?

Answer: A Hognose Snake

Hognose snakes are great bluffers. They will flatten their head, hiss, strike (without biting) and if a perceived threat still does not go away, they will convulse, flip onto their back, and play dead. Captive specimens usually tame quite quickly though, and may not exhibit this behaviour (at least to this extreme) very often.
6. Which snake family has the most members?

Answer: Colubrids

The Colubrid group makes up around 50% of all the snakes in the world. They are non-venomous or mildly venomous and include a huge array of snakes such as Corn Snakes, King Snakes, Milk Snakes, Hognose Snakes, Bull Snakes and Rat Snakes.
7. In the UK, it is illegal to offer live mammals as food except as a last resort.

Answer: False

There is a common misconception that it is illegal to offer live rodents to a reptile but this is not actually true. However, the RSPCA are against it on the grounds that it can cause 'unnecessary suffering' and they may prosecute on these grounds.

It is generally better not to feed your pet snake on live food. There are many reasons why not, but an important one is that a live rodent can do considerable damage to your snake and even kill it. Frozen and then thawed rodents are generally given to captive snakes, but it is important that they are thawed thoroughly. Frozen mice should never be microwaved to thaw, this can cause them to thaw unevenly. The best way to thaw rodents is to place them in a bowl of tepid water. This helps to ensure an even thaw, and also hydrates the creature, making it more palatable.
8. Which of these is NOT one of the top ten deadliest snakes?

Answer: Milk Snake

Milk snakes are harmless constrictors and can actually make good pets.
9. Which of these snakes is the smallest in length?

Answer: Children's Python

Children's Pythons reach an average length of about 2 feet, Corn Snakes about 4.5 feet, while Cali Kings and Royal Pythons both reach an average length of about 4 feet.
10. True or false, all snakes lay eggs?

Answer: False

Some snakes (e.g rattlesnakes) give birth to live young.
