However, Marcos remained the ruler until 1986, when he was overthrown by followers of Corazon Aquino, widow of the assassinated opposition leader.

Marcos and his wife, Imelda, fled to Hawaii, where Marcos was arrested for tax evasion and fraud. However, before he could be brought to trial, Marcos died in 1989.
