Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This English-born, Canadian-raised actor donned a kilt for the 2004 wedding of his stepdaughter, but it's unlikely that he'd wear one while interrogating suspects at CTU. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Kiefer Sutherland

As Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer on the T.V. show "24", Sutherland's opportunities for wearing a kilt are slim, but the actor does have Scottish heritage from his actor parents, Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. His stepdaughter, Michelle is the daughter of the late Chicago singer, Terry Kath; Sutherland was briefly married to her mother in the 1980s.

Did you know that Kiefer briefly gave up acting in the mid 1990s to try team roping on the rodeo circuit? He probably didn't ride in a kilt though.
2. This front man for a late 1980s rock band made a fashion statement with a kilt and flannel shirt ensemble. At least he didn't wear it to the wedding in the "November Rain" video. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Axl Rose

Guns and Roses had that big-hair look when they first came on the scene - make-up and all - but their sound was distinct, setting them apart from the other 1980s metal bands, and they managed to hold their own against the grunge bands of the early 1990s.

Rose does have Scottish heritage, which explains the kilt. As for the flannel, perhaps he worked as a lumberjack at some point in his life. He doesn't look the type, but if he puts on women's clothing and hangs around in bars, we'll know for sure.
3. It is not surprising that this Canadian actor/comedian has Scottish ancestry - he has used the accent for several of his characters, including one with a penchant for babyback ribs. But the kilt/hockey jersey combo he wore at a 2009 charity fashion show isn't standard attire for a Scot. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Mike Myers

Myers has used his Scottish accent in films such as "So I Married an Axe Murderer" and the Austin Powers series, in the latter of which he played a rather memorable Scotsman with a voracious appetite (whose name we'll omit). He also appeared in kilts in those films, so the look isn't new for him (but the combination with the hockey shirt might be).
4. This Irish actor wore a kilt while playing a Scottish folk hero in a 1995 movie - a couple of years after his Oscar-nominated portrayal of a factory owner during World War II. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Liam Neeson

Neeson portrayed Rob Roy in the 1995 movie of the same name. Unfortunately, the movie was rather overshadowed by another film about a Scottish hero, Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" which was released the same year. But some think that Neeson looked better in a kilt - his was rated the hottest kilt appearance on film by The Costumer website.
5. Think you have to watch a caber toss to see an athlete in a kilt? Well this Puerto Rican New York Yankees slugger and classically-trained guitarist donned one for a charity fashion show in 2009. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Bernie Williams

In his post-Yankee years, Williams has become an accomplished musician, collaborating with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Ruben Blades and Jon Secada. Paul McCartney is a fan of his jazz/blues/Latin fusion - he signed Williams to his music publishing firm.

Although the Puerto Rican Bernie may not have Scottish heritage, he looked dashing in a kilt on the runway of the Dressed to Kilt fashion show in 2009.
6. Well, it's a questionable kilt since it was made out of leather, but this action film star wore one when he co-hosted the MTV Europe awards in 2003. At least the kilt wasn't rated Triple X. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Vin Diesel

Diesel's choice of a kilt was appropriate as the award show was held in Edinburgh; the choice of leather was possibly due to his tough guy persona in such movies as "xXx" and "The Chronicles of Riddick". Apparently, he didn't get the word that real men wear tartan kilts - just ask Sean Connery.

Interesting tidbit: Vin Diesel is a card-carrying Dungeons and Dragons addict. He started playing in the 1980s (whenever he had free time from his bouncer duties) and continued through the years. In an interview for the UGO (Lifestyle for Gamers) website, he claims that he "was literally playing Dungeons and Dragons with Judi Dench... at nights after shooting" while filming the movie "The Chronicles of Riddick".
7. This Grateful Dead guitarist chose a traditional kilt to wear at his 1999 wedding. Maybe he couldn't find a tie-dyed one. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Bob Weir

Weir is another kilt-wearer with Scottish roots, although I couldn't find any pictures of him in a kilt at a Dead concert (but there are LOTS of other interesting photos from Dead concerts...). Besides his years with the Grateful Dead, he has worked with other bands including Kingfish and RatDog.

He has also developed interests outside of music, including charitable work for a variety of environmental and social causes and creating his own line of cooking sauces.
8. Do aliens wear kilts? This actor may be able to tell us - he wore one to the 2000 premier of his film, "Return to Me". The truth is out there. Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: David Duchovny

Duchovny has Scottish ancestry - not sure if "X-Files" FBI agent Fox Mulder does. The choice of wearing the kilt, though, probably was due to the movie premiere being held in Scotland.

Interesting tidbit: Despite several of the "X-Files" episodes taking place in Arizona, they were actually filmed in Vancouver, Canada. Duchovny did get to film in Arizona for the movie "Evolution" where he played... a man investigating aliens.
9. These U.S. insurance advertising icons were so popular that they even briefly had their own T.V. show. Although not standard attire in their usual environment, one of them modeled a kilt at a 2009 charity fashion show. Can you name this kilt-wearer?

Answer: A Geico Caveman

Geico achieved fame through a barrage of clever advertisements, including many with a gecko spokes-lizard (and who doesn't like lizards?). But it was a series of ads for their website using the tag "Geico: so easy a caveman can do it" that not only were immensely popular but let us know that cavemen are still around and living sophisticated lives among us.
10. Dealing with snakes on a plane while wearing a kilt is not recommended. Luckily, this actor instead wore one while playing a drug dealer in his 2001 film, "The 51st State" aka "Formula 51". Can you name this kilt-wearing man?

Answer: Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson has played a wide assortment of characters - from troubled souls in "Jungle Fever" and "Pulp Fiction" to a Jedi Master in the "Star Wars" saga and the Voice of God in an audio book version of the Bible.

Interesting tidbit: Jackson is a golf fanatic who carried a light saber in his golf bag while filming the "Star Wars" flicks so that he could practice moves in between holes on the course.
