David Frederick Attenborough was born on the 8 May 1926, the son of Frederick and Mary Attenborough. His father was a school administrator. Richard Samuel Attenborough was born 29 August 1923. Frederick and Mary's other son, John, ran a chain of garages.

Answer: Navy

David joined the Navy in 1947. After his two year service he went to work for a publishing company before joining the BBC in 1952.

David had interviewed Olympic runner Gordon Pirie. Unfortunately Gordon answered most of the questions David put to him with an one syllable reply. It wasn't until several decades later that David actually stumbled across the note.

Sir David married Jane Elizabeth Ebsworth Oriel in 1950. She died on the eve of their 47th wedding anniversary. In his autobiography Sir David says "The focus of my life, the anchor, had gone. Jane had always been there. She had been at the airport, unfailingly, every time I came back from a trip.

She had supported me in everything I had done. Indeed, most of the things I had done were, in actuality, joint enterprises. I could not have led the life I had, were it not for her unwavering support. Now, I was lost."
