Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some people think this singer committed suicide. Others think he was murdered by his wife, Courtney Love. Who is this?

Answer: Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer of Nirvana. In the 1980s, hair metal was king. Those bands became unpopular in the 1990s thanks to Nirvana. Nirvana created a new style of music: a dark form of rock known as grunge which eventually evolved into alternative rock. Nirvana sold over 75 million albums worldwide thanks in large part to one of the most iconic albums ever released "Nevermind". "Nevermind" is known for its cover, which has a naked baby swimming and trying to get a dollar bill, and its known for songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Bloom", "Come as You Are" and "Lithium".

In 1994, Cobain died with a shotgun in his hand held to his head and a suicide note next to him. Some people believe Courtney Love murdered him and wrote a fake suicide note. Most people believe he really committed suicide.
2. This legendary guitarist died of a drug overdose in 1970. Who was this?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the greatest guitarist of all time. He forever changed the way the instrument is played. He also wrote, or in some cases covered and improved upon, iconic songs like "Purple Haze", "Manic Depression", "Hey Joe", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Fire", "Foxy Lady" and "All Along the Watchtower". His first two albums, "Are You Experienced" and "Axis: Bold as Love", were on "Rolling Stone's" list of the 100 greatest albums of all time.

Unfortunately, like many celebrities, he was also a drug addict. Drugs made him look like he was in his 40s, and then they took his life at age 27.
3. This "Drunken-Hearted Man" died in 1938. Who was he?

Answer: Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who lived from 1911 until 1938. He wasn't well-known in life, but he had a tremendous influence on rock and roll. Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and Fleetwood Mac all consider Robert Johnson to be a tremendous musical influence in their careers. Three of my favorite artists/bands, David Bromberg, the Mountain Goats and the Devil Makes Three, have covered a Robert Johnson song ("Sweet Home Chicago", "Hellhound on my Trail" and "Drunken-Hearted Man", respectively). If you listen to any music at all, chances are that Robert Johnson influenced at least one of your favorite artists.

For most of his life, and about 30 years after his death, Robert Johnson was unknown. Then the band Cream covered his song "Crossroad Blues" in 1968. Cream's version of the song became very popular and made Robert Johnson a household name.

Robert Johnson is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived, as are many of the guitarists he influenced (Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards). He is also regarded as one of the greatest songwriters ever, as are other songwriters he influenced (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger).

Johnson was murdered in 1938 by a jealous husband of a woman that he had been flirting with.
4. This "Light My Fire" singer died in 1971. Who was he?

Answer: Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison was the lead singer of The Doors. The Doors sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and have influenced many bands. They are known for hits like "Light My Fire" and "Hello, I Love You". Artists and bands who have covered a Doors song include Billy Idol, Creed, and Eddie Vedder.

Morrison died in 1971 at age 27.
5. People didn't know that this singer was no good. Or if they did, they didn't care because they loved her anyway. She died in 2011. Who was she?

Answer: Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was a British singer. Her style was a mixture of soul and blues. She became popular in England with her 2003 album "Frank". She became popular worldwide with her 2006 album "Back to Black". She was famous for her music, but it also helped that she was beautiful.

She was a very troubled person, and even admitted it in her songs. Her biggest hit, "Rehab" is a song about her family trying unsuccessfully to get her into rehab to get over her alcohol addiction. In "Back to Black" you learn that Amy Winehouse is terrible at handling break-ups and uses alcohol or drugs to help her cope. Other song titles that let you know how troubled she was include "You Know I'm No Good", "Tears Dry on Their Own", and "Love is a Losing Game".

She died from alcohol poisoning at age 27.

The Mountain Goats released a tribute song dedicated to her in 2012 called "Amy AKA Spent Gladiator 1."
6. Some people think this co-founder of the Rolling Stones committed suicide in 1969. Other people think he was murdered. Who was he?

Answer: Brian Jones

Brian Jones was a multi-instrumentalist. He played piano, organ, guitar, sitar, harmonica, saxophone, and organ. He is best known as one of the founding members of The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones are one of the top five most popular and most influential rock bands of all time. He was fired from the band in 1968 because of substance abuse, bad behavior at rehearsals, skipping rehearsals, and legal troubles.

Brian Jones died in 1971. The most popular theory is that he overdosed on drugs, then drowned in a pool. Another popular theory is that he was murdered by a construction worker named Frank Thorogood.

One thing's for sure: despite his problems, The Rolling Stones released their best music when he was in the band.
7. This singer was one of the first major women in rock music. She died in 1970. Who was she?

Answer: Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was, in my opinion, the greatest female rock singer ever. Although most of her hits were cover songs, the songs were usually better and more popular when she sang them. Songs that she is famous for singing include Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee", Erma Franklin's "Piece of My Heart", Garnet Mims' "Cry Baby", Bib Mama Thronton's "Ball and Chain" and her original song "Mercedez Benz". Her original song "Move Over" has been covered by popular glam rock bands Slade and Cinderella.

She was a big influence. Steve Nicks says that the greatest moment of her career, other than opening for Jimi Hendrix, was opening for Janis Joplin and being yelled at by her when Fleetwood Mac were onstage for longer than they were allowed to be.

Joplin died of drug overdose in 1971.
8. This founding member of the Grateful Dead died in 1973. What was he known as?

Answer: Pigpen

Ronald Charles McKernan, better known as Pigpen, was one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead. He got his nickname because he reminded people of the "Peanuts" character of that name.

Pigpen left the Grateful Dead in 1972 due to Primary Biliary Cholangitis, a rare disease. He died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage in 1973.
9. This man was a sound technician for The Mars Volta. He died in 2003. Who was he?

Answer: Jeremy Ward

Jeremy Ward was a sound technician for The Mars Volta. The Mars Volta were a prog rock band known for their radio hit "The Widow" as well as their concept albums. He died of a heroin overdose.
10. This drummer of Echo and the Bunnymen died in 1989. Who was he?

Answer: Pete de Freitas

Echo and the Bunnymen are a rock band from England. They are known for songs like "The Killing Moon" and "The Cutter". Their original drummer, Pete de Freitas, died in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
