1. Who first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938)?

Answer: Superman

The creators of Superman, Joe Schuster and Jerry Siegel, had originally developed Superman as a newspaper comic strip and were rejected. National Comics (now DC) were looking for a new idea to publish in their books and tried the Superman character. Action #1 is considered to be the forerunner of all superhero comics.
2. Detective Comics #38 (April 1940) marked the first appearance of who?

Answer: Robin

Robin was the first teen-aged sidekick in comics. The character was intended to give the young comics reader of the day a hero that they could more closely associate with.

While DC is able to use the character they can not use Captain Marvel in the title of their books. DC uses SHAZAM! (Captain Marvel's magic word) in the title of books about this character.
