Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favourite cartoon character is an English schoolboy called Eric in his normal life. When Eric eats a certain type of fruit, he turns into a crime-fighting superhero. What's his superhero name?

Answer: Bananaman

"Bananaman" was originally in the British comic called "Nutty" and made his first appearance in the first edition, which came out in 1980. In the comic, Eric's surname was Wimp.

The TV version of "Bananaman" was first broadcast on the BBC in October 1983 and ran until April 1986. Eric was no longer called Eric Wimp, but he still lived at 29 Acacia Street. The characters were voiced by the British comedy trio "The Goodies" who had made their name with their own BBC TV show in the 1970s. They were known for their irreverent, anarchic, madcap humour, and their parodies such as "Kitten Kong".

"Bananaman" is my favourite cartoon character because he was so rubbish that he only managed to fight crime because the crooks ("the heavy mob") were even more feckless than him. The show was really silly, and littered with cheesy jokes and clichés. What I will never understand though is why a schoolboy became an adult after eating a banana. Maybe because "Bananaboy" sounds too daft?

Believe it or not, all the red herrings are bonafide fictional characters.

2. My favorite cartoon character is a dog who has appeared in many Warner Brothers cartoons. He's always trying to get Porky Pig to adopt him, but without success. What is this loveable but annoying dog's name?

Answer: Charlie

Charlie Dog created by Bob Clampett has usually been abandoned by his former owner. Porky Pig is Charlie's choice to be his new master and no matter how hard Porky tries to get rid of him, Charlie always manages to remain.

In these cartoons, Charlie's one desire is to find himself a master. To this end he uses his big soulful eyes routine as well as boasting of his pedigree. He only mentions his name in one cartoon, "The Awful Orphan" (1949) where he whispers to Porky that he's a female expecting puppies. Porky falls for it until he asks what Charlie's name is. After throwing Charlie out, Charlie opens the door and says, "Well, there actually was such a case in Venezuela!"

3. My favourite cartoon character is Daffy Duck, who appeared in many "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons produced by Warner Bros. In what year did Daffy first make his appearance?

Answer: 1937

Daffy's first appearance was in the cartoon "Porky's Duck Hunt" which was released on 17 April 1937. However, he was not the "Daffy" duck we know, but a fairly normal duck evolving over time to the "Daffy" duck we know and love. His distinctive lisp also evolved over time. Although others have voiced Daffy, Mel Blanc holds the record for voicing him at 52 years.

The US Postal Service issued a stamp in 1999 featuring Daffy leaning against a mailbox, where he looks in the mailbox and sees two letters in the box bearing postage stamps of Bugs Bunny, Sylvester and Tweety Pie.

Daffy is well known for his catch-phrase "You're dessspicable!".

4. My favorite cartoon character is Mr. Magoo. He is always having problems due to his poor eyesight! What is Mr. Magoo's first name?

Answer: Quincy

The first Mr. Magoo cartoon "The Ragtime Bear" was released in 1949. The very talented radio, TV and movie actor Jim Backus (1913-1989) provided his voice. Among his many movie roles Jim Backus played Frank Stark, the father of Jim Stark played by James Dean in the 1955 movie "Rebel Without A Cause".

A regular character in the Mr. Magoo cartoons was his nephew Waldo, voiced by Daws Butler (1916-1988), who was also the voice of Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss and Yogi Bear. The Waldo character was sometimes voiced by Jerry Hausner (1909-1993.)

Mr. Magoo's dog McBarker, is just as near sighted and looks just like his master. My favorite line of Mr. Magoo's is, "Oh Magoo, you've done it again!" A true classic!

5. One of my all time favourite cartoon characters is Popeye. However, this question is about another character that appears in Popeye cartoons, Wimpy. What is Wimpy's full name?

Answer: J. Wellington Wimpy

J. Wellington Wimpy, (Wimpy to you and me) is a gluttonous cowardly con-man and his favourite food by far, is the hamburger. Hence the line "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Before becoming an animated cartoon Popeye was a newspaper comic strip. It began in 1929 for the King Features Syndicate Inc. which was owned by the Hearst Corporation. Originally Wimpy was a dominant character in the newspaper strip but became a minor character in the Fleischer Studios animated cartoons.

Wellington J. Reynolds was one of Segar's instructors at the Chicago Art Institute.
William Schuchert was the manager of the Chester Opera House where Segar was first employed. He was known as Windy Bill and was fond of hamburgers.
H. Hillard Wimpee claimed in a 1935 interview for The Daily Oklahoman that he worked with Segar at the Chicago Herald-Examiner in 1917.

6. This favourite cartoon character of mine is, along with Elmer Fudd, an arch enemy of Bugs Bunny. He has a loud voice and gets very angry. What is his name?

Answer: Yosemite Sam

Yosemite Sam, like Daffy Duck was also produced by Warner Bros. through the Merrie Melodies and Loony Toons cartoons. He is usually portrayed as a "western" character, such as an outlaw gunslinger, prospector or cowboy, but he has also appeared as a Pirate, a Prison guard, a Viking, an Indian Chief, a Sailor and a Chef, amongst others. He was originally voiced by Mel Blanc but Sam's voice was not easy to do for Mr Blanc so Yosemite was voiced by others.

He made his first appearance in 1945 in "Hare Trigger". He is very short in stature, in fact he has sometimes used a set or portable steps to help him get on his horse. He has red hair and his face is covered by a rather large moustache; he is very aggressive and has rather a bad temper. He always wears a small mask which covers only his eyes (like those worn at Carnival), even when he plays a character other than an outlaw. Yosemite Sam has several catch-phrases, the most common probably being "I'm the roughest, toughest, root'nest toot'nest, fastest gun-slinger west of the Pecos", and "Ah hates rabbits".

7. Who could ever forget the battle of wits between Top Cat and Officer Dibble. Top Cat had a five strong gang of ne'er-do-wells, Benny The Ball, Brain, Fancy-Fancy and Spook. Who is missing from the list?

Answer: Choo-Choo

The 30 episodes of "Top Cat" were originally broadcast between September 1961 and April 1962, on the ABC network in the U. S. A. It seems to have been re-run somewhere in the world ever since. The story of T. C. (Top Cat) and his gang of alley cats revolve around them pulling the wool over police officer Charles Dibble's eyes while up to some kind of scam. Officer Dibble tries to catch them in the act and also evict them from Hoagy's Alley in Manhattan.

The characters in the "Top Cat" show may have been inspired by the tough talking characters from the 1940s B-movies "The Dead End Kids"/The East Side Kids"/The Bowery Boys" and the 1950s TV show "The Phil Silvers Show". Arnold Stang who voiced Top Cat sounded like the Phil Silvers character Sgt. Bilko. Maurice Gosfield who voiced Benny The Ball also played private Duane Doberman on "The Phil Silvers Show".

Gang members Brain and Spook were voiced by Leo De Lyon, Choo-Choo was voiced by Marvin Kaplan and Fancy-Fancy was voiced by John Stephenson. Officer Charles Dibble was voiced by actor Allen Jenkins.

8. My favorite twosome were created by Chuck Jones for Warner Brothers cartoons. This cat and dog duo first appeared in the 1952 cartoon "Feed The Kitty". Who are the burly bulldog and the adorable little cat?

Answer: Marc Anthony and Pussyfoot

In their first appearance together in "Feed the Kitty", Marc Anthony the dog sneaks Pussyfoot the cat into the house. He then does everything possible to keep Pussyfoot hidden from his owner (voiced by actress Bea Benaderet) but she discovers the kitten anyway. I love it when Marc Anthony thinks that Pussyfoot was accidentally baked into a cookie!

They went on to appear in three more cartoons together: "Kiss Me Cat" (1953), "Feline Frame-Up" (1954) and "Cat Feud" (1958). Both characters have also appeared alone in other cartoons. Marc Anthony appeared alone in "Cheese Chasers" (1951), "No Barking" (1954) and "Fast Buck Duck" (1963). Pussyfoot appeared alone in "Go Fly a Kit" (1957) and "Another Froggy Evening" (1995).

9. One of my favourite cartoon characters is an animal called Roobarb who was the star of an eponymous series in the 1970s. What kind of animal is Roobarb?

Answer: Dog

"Roobarb" is erroneously known as "Roobarb and Custard" by many whose memories have got rusty over the years. The reason is that the show is essentially a battle of wills between Roobarb the dog and Custard the cat. Roobarb is good-natured albeit slightly naïve, whereas Custard is wily, and crafty. Custard is often seen sporting a sardonic grin, especially if Roobarb has made a fool of himself. However, things don't always work out that way and Roobarb does occasionally get the last laugh.

Episodes of "Roobarb" only last about five minutes and there are only thirty of them. They were all written and drawn by the series' creator Grange Calveley, and narrated by mild-mannered British actor and national treasure the late Richard Briers. The drawings are really rough-and-ready and the animation has a weird so-called "wobbly" look. The crazy theme tune coupled with this wobbly image sent millions of kids nuts every afternoon after school, for which we are all truly grateful.

10. One of my favorite characters is "Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat". She lived with her family in China around 1840. Do you know what the name "Sagwa" means in English?

Answer: Melon-head

I think this is a very good educational show. During Sagwa's many adventures, we learn a lot about Chinese customs and traditions.

Sagwa was created by author Amy Tan in 1994. The Canadian-American animated series was brought to PBS Kids television in 2001 and was very well received. Sagwa is voiced by actress Holly Gauthier-Frankel.

Sagwa Miao (the middle child) and her extended family live in the palace of a magistrate and his family in Hong Kong. The family of cats are considered to be royalty and they all have the ability to write with their tails.
