Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1899, the first modern slot machine was designed by Charles Fey of San Francisco. It was named for one of the symbols on the reels. What was the name of this early "one-armed bandit"?

Answer: the Liberty Bell

Before the Liberty Bell, slot machines had five reels and playing cards were used as symbols, but it was difficult to assign payouts with the many combinations which could result. Three reel slot machines payed a player when the combination of three symbols in a row was made. Jackpot was made when three liberty bells lined up. Prizes were not always monetary but could be cigars or chewing gum.

They were very popular in their time.
2. What do the numbers on the roulette wheel, 1 through 36, add up to? (Note: Let's not consider the zeroes although they wouldn't change the equation.)

Answer: 666

Interestingly the numbers add up to 666, a number infamous for it's relation to the devil. Roulette was an amalgamation of a number of games and was popular in Paris in the late 1700s. The game is played with a small ball spinning around a central wheel that is divided into a number of slots, each representing a number and a color. Players make bets on the next number to fall by placing markers on a rectangular table top divided into squares with numbers and colors in them. Bets may also be made on whether a certain color falls or odd or even numbers fall.

It is mindless fun.
3. You are at your favorite gaming parlor and there is an unruly crowd standing around a long table yelling out crazy words and screaming.Men and women with long wands are moving piles of chips and yelling out "yo eleven". It appears very intimidating. Yet it is one of the most exciting games to play for those with a bit of pluck. If the player throws a two, three or twelve on his or her first roll of the dice, what have they done?

Answer: crapped out

You are watching a game of craps! The players make a bet on the pass line, if they wish, before a new shooter throws his first two dice. It has to be a one handed throw and the two dice have to hit the far wall of the craps table. If he or she throws a 2, 3 or 12, the house rakes in the pass line bets and he or she has "crapped out". If the player throws a 7 or 11, they have made a "natural" and the pass line bets are paid. Any other number thrown becomes the "point" or number to be repeated before the player throws another seven at which time any pass line bets are lost.

It is a complex scene and you can gamble on just about any outcome, even against yourself, if you are the shooter.
4. You are sitting in front of a green table and there are dragons imprinted on the felt. The dealer deals seven cards to you and seven cards to himself. You must then divide your seven cards into two hands, one high and one low. What game are you playing and losing your hard earned money?

Answer: Pai Gow poker

Pai Gow poker is an amalgamation of the poker we all know well and a Chinese domino game. The object is to form two hands, both of which have to beat the dealer's hands, to win the bet you have risked. You break even if you only beat one of the dealer's hands and lose your bet if the dealer's hands are both higher than yours.

The most common outcome is for the player to tie the dealer. Players may also act as the banker with the casino taking a commission. The game is a bit more sedate than some other table games.
5. You are sitting in front of a green table covered with felt, one of several players. Two cards are dealt to you and with these and any others that you request, a figure of twenty-one has to reached without going over that amount. Aces are counted as one or eleven and face cards as ten. You look down and the cards that have been dealt to you are an Ace and a Queen of hearts. What have you been dealt and how do you proceed? (Note: The dealer has an eight and a queen.)

Answer: a Blackjack and you are an instant winner

Blackjack is a great game where everybody seems to know the rules, such as they are. You have a Blackjack with twenty-one being dealt to you and unless the dealer also has Blackjack, you will be a winner. Since he has eighteen and by the rules, has to stand on this number, you will be paid as a winner with a little bonus for the Blackjack itself.

There are many strategies that you use depending on the value of your hand versus the dealer's hand. The game is fast paced and actually gives you a better chance of winning than most casino games.
6. You have travelled down a street garishly lit by neon to your next favorite gaming emporium. Inside, the sound of money falling into trays assails your senses. You notice a big wheel near the ATM that has dollar bills in different denominations around the circumference. Spinning it seems to be all you have to do to win. What is this game called?

Answer: Big Six Wheel

The Big Six Wheel is probably the worst bet in the casino but it is so easy to do and the money so enticing, that the game has been a staple for fairs and money raisers as well as casinos for years. It has mostly been replaced by the penny slots as a popular game for neophytes (suckers in the gaming parlance). The house advantage is huge. Go directly to the blackjack table, do not stop.
7. You dream that you are James Bond and that you have come to France to play cards and break the bank. What game do you and 007 prefer, providing that you cannot play Texas Hold'em?

Answer: Baccarat chemin-de-fer

Bond would have preferred to play Baccarat in the good old days but now plays Texas Hold'em. Chemin-de-fer is similar to blackjack where the object is to achieve a number closest to nine with two or three cards. The cards two through nine are worth their face value, the Ace worth one and the ten through King worth zero.

The game is not as popular as some but there are very high stakes tables available in some casinos. Perhaps you drive an Aston Martin, n'est ce pas?
8. What Las Vegas casino hotel suffered a hotel fire on November 21, 1980?

Answer: MGM Grand

The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino fire in 1980 cost the lives of 84 people that day - 87 people would eventually stand as the death toll. The fire started in a restaurant and spread to the rest of the hotel quickly. Interestingly, the Las Vegas Hilton also had a fire eight months later. The MGM Grand was rebuilt and later sold to Bally Entertainment Corporation.
9. You enter your favorite casino with dreams of winning millions. In fact, you are likely to lose your poke, but nevertheless, you try. What type of slot machine might you head towards for the big win?

Answer: a progressive slot machine

If you want to win big in Las Vegas, it helps to win at a progressive slot machine. These machines are networked together to offer a much higher win than would be available on a single machine. There may be connections to hundreds of other machines.
10. What are the majority of casino tokens or chips made from?

Answer: clay

The largest majority of casino tokens or chips are made from clay and come in a variety of colors and denominations. All tokens in the United States have an identification of the casino and the dollar value imprinted on the chip. Each casino has a unique chip design and these are not cashable by other casinos. Professionals can do chip tricks and do so to counter boredom at the table. Chip tricks and shuffling may be used to buy time when deciding on a move as well.
11. In a casino card game, you are dealt two cards down and four up and then one more down. Betting takes place throughout the deal. What game are you playing?

Answer: Stud

Stud poker is a game where a series of down and up cards are dealt and the best poker hand wins the pot. Betting takes place as the hand is dealt. Omaha is a community poker game and Blackjack and Baccarat are played with fewer cards and different rules. Stud poker has been around for a long time and was popular among soldiers as well as professional gamblers.
12. Wild Bill Hickok was shot holding a poker hand and this hand has attained the notorious name of the "dead man's hand". Can you identify the hand Bill held that fateful day?

Answer: two pair, aces and eights

Wild Bill Hickok held two pair, aces and eights, when he was killed in Deadwood by John McCall by a shot to the back of the head. Wild Bill usually sat with his back to a wall but in the game in question, he was unable to trade seats. Wild Bill is now in the Poker Hall of Fame.
13. A studious young man is sitting at the Blackjack table beside you and he is watching carefully all the cards played and occasionally changing his bets as he sees certain card values being discarded. You suspect he is card counting and the pit boss is standing near his position. Is card counting illegal in the United States?

Answer: No

Card counting in the United States is not illegal as long as external devices or helpers are not employed. The casinos do their best to discourage card counting, though, and blacklist players who are caught doing so. They may harrass the player or reshuffle the shoe, when large wagers are made at random times. Counting increases the odds of a win for the player.
14. Princess Caroline, a French actress married to Prince Florestan I of Monaco, proposed building a casino to bolster the family income and it was a great success. What is the name of this famous casino designed in the Beaux Arts style?

Answer: Monte Carlo casino

The Monte Carlo casino is as described and the environs include an opera theater and the offices of a ballet company as well as the surrounding villages. Casino Royale is the title of a book by Ian Fleming and Royale-Les-Eaux is a fictional casino in that book. Pokerhaus is a fictional casino as well. James Bond was seen in Monte Carlo and the term "breaking the bank" originated with the exploits and success of a gambler who won a prodigious sum in the Monte Carlo casino.
15. Casinos are very particular with the dice that are used at the craps tables. Players may reap great profit from a die that rolls in a predictable way. What are dice made from?

Answer: cellulose acetate

Modern dice are made from cellulose acetate and are perfect cubes ground to very low tolerances. The spots on each side of the dice, six sides in all, are removed from the cube and refilled with material of the same weight. The spots are arranged so that the sum of all opposing sides equals seven. Serial numbers or logos of the casino may be incorporated in the design. Discarded dice have to be marked indelibly so that they may not be used again. Crooked dice are those that are altered in some way to yield an advantage.
