Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You hold 7s5s and your opponent holds AsAc. The board reads 5c6h6c8s. You have 10 outs to win the hand. Of the choices below, which one will NOT win the hand for you if it comes on the river? (If you have problems seeing the cards click on the photo to enlarge it.)

Answer: 7h

The 10 outs are any four or nine for a straight and either of the two remaining fives for trips. The 7h would only give you two pair (sevens and fives) and your opponent already has a better two pair (aces and sixes).

This hand took place between Joseph Cheong with the aces and Filippo Candio with 7s5s at the 2010 WSOP Main Event. Candio raised preflop and Cheong reraised. Candio called. On the flop Candio checked and Cheong bet. Candio raised and Cheong pushed all-in. Candio called. On the turn he picked up an open ended straight draw to increase his outs. He caught the 4c on the river to win the hand.
2. You hold Ad7d and your opponent holds AsKc. The board reads 5hKh5s7c. Which of these cards do you need to catch on the river to win or tie?

Answer: 7s

In this instance you need one of the two remaining sevens in the deck to give you trips; any other card would give your opponent the win.

This hand happened between Danny Nguyen holding Ad7d and Shandor Szentkuti holding AsKc at the 2005 WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Tournament. All of the money went in on the flop. The odds of Danny hitting runner runner sevens to win the hand were 274 to 1 or 0.36%. This hand was one of four hands in which Danny was extremely lucky. Danny went on to win the tournament.
3. You hold JhJc and your opponent holds AsAc. The board reads Td9c7hQd. You have 10 outs to win the hand. Of these choices, which one will NOT win the hand for you if it comes on the river?

Answer: 9d

In this hand you need either of the two remaining jacks (2) for trips or you have an open ended straight draw meaning any king (4) or any eight (4) gives you a straight (2+4+4=10).

This hand took place between Jonathan Duhamel holding the jacks and Matt Affleck holding the aces at the 2010 WSOP Main Event. Matt pushed all-in on the turn. Jonathan decided to gamble and made the call. Jonathan had Matt covered. He got lucky on the river when the 8d came giving him the straight. Matt had been a 4 to 1 favorite to win the hand.
4. You hold AhQd and your opponent holds 9s9h. The board reads Qs6sQh9c. You have seven outs to win the hand. Which card on the river will NOT save you?

Answer: Ks

In this hand your opponent has a full house and you need to fill up by hitting one of the three remaining aces or one of the three remaining sixes. You can also win with quads if the remaining queen comes. The Ks does you no good.

This remarkable hand happened on the bubble of the 2003 WSOP Main Event final table when Chris Moneymaker holding the AhQd tangled with Phil Ivey holding the pocket nines. Moneymaker raised preflop, Ivey called as did Jason Lester holding pocket tens. The flop was huge for Moneymaker as he flopped trips. Lester checked the flop and Moneymaker bet. Ivey called while Lester then folded. Ivey hit the nine on the turn to get a full house. Moneymaker bet out and Ivey raised all-in. Moneymaker quickly called only to see he was way behind. The miracle As on the river gave him the win and knocked Ivey out of the tournament in tenth place.
5. You hold AhAd and your opponent holds KhKs. The flop comes Qh6hKd. The turn is the 2h. You have 10 outs to win the hand. Which of these river cards would NOT give you the win?

Answer: Jc

The ten outs you have are any remaining heart (8) for a flush or one of the remaining aces (2) for better trips. Normally a flush draw has nine outs but your opponent holds one of your outs.

This hand happened between Mike Matusow and Scott Lazar at the final table of the 2005 WSOP Main Event. It was the first hand of the final table. Steve Dannenmann opened the betting with pocket jacks. He was raised by Scott Lazar holding pocket aces. Matusow then pushed all-in with the pocket kings. Dannenmann folded and Lazar called. The flop gave Matusow a set but the turn gave Lazar a whole bunch more outs. He hit the Jh on the river to win the hand and cripple Matusow.
6. You hold Ts2s and your opponent holds AsJd. The board reads AhJsTh2c. Which of these cards will give you the win on the river?

Answer: Td

Both you and your opponent hold two pair but his is superior. You only hope is to get a full house. You need to hit either of the two remaining tens or two remaining deuces to fill up and win the hand.

This hand was made famous by Doyle Brunson when he won his first WSOP Main Event in 1976. Heads up for the title Doyle held the Ts2s against Jesse Alto who held the AsJd. Jesse raised preflop and Doyle called. The flop came AhJsTh and Jesse led out with a bet. Doyle moved all-in hoping to induce a fold but there was no way Jesse was folding top two pair. Doyle needed help and he got it when the 2c came on the turn and the Td came on the river.

Interestingly, the very next year Doyle was heads up again for the title and had the chip lead. This time he held Ts2h with Gary Berland holding 8h5c. The flop came Td8s5h and both players checked. The turn brought the 2c. Doyle bet out and Gary raised all-in. Doyle called and a meaningless Tc fell on the river. Doyle won the hand and won the tournament. Twice Doyle held ten deuce and twice he hit a full house to win the WSOP Main Event in back to back years.
7. You hold 7s6d and your opponent holds AcAh. The board reads 5h3cJs. Which one of these cards on the turn or river will give you an unbeatable hand?

Answer: 4s

On the flop you would have an inside straight draw meaning you need a four to complete your straight. In this case if you do get your straight on the turn your opponent will be drawing dead with no river card that could save them.

This hand was the last hand of the 1979 WSOP Main Event and happened between amateur Hal Fowler holding the 7s6d and pro Bobby Hoff holding the aces. Fowler held a 4 to 1 chip lead so he was willing to gamble when Hoff raised preflop. The flop came and Hoff bet out with Fowler calling. The miracle 4s came on the turn and Fowler could not lose the hand. The only question remaining was how much he would win. Fowler checked and Hoff pushed all-in. Fowler called and Hoff saw the bad news that he was drawing dead.
8. You hold TcTd and your opponent holds Ac9d. The board reads 9s2c4dAs. Which of these river cards will give you the win?

Answer: Ts

Your opponent currently has two pair vs. your one pair. The only way to win would be to hit one of the two remaining tens on the river to improve to trips.

This hand happened heads up at the 1990 WSOP Main Event between Monsour Matloubi holding the pocket tens and Hans Lund with the ace nine off-suit. The flop gave Lund top pair but he still trailed Matloubi. Lund check raised the flop at which point Matloubi pushed all-in and Lund called. Matloubi was a 4 to 1 favorite at that point but the As on the turn changed everything making him a 19 to 1 dog. If Lund won the hand the tournament would be over. The miracle Ts came on the river giving Matloubi the pot and keeping him alive. After many more hours of battle Matloubi would eventually win the tournament.
9. You hold Ks9c and your opponent holds QhJs. The board is KhTs9s7d. Which of these cards on the river would give you the win?

Answer: 9h

At present you have two pair but your opponent has a king high straight. Your only hope is to fill up with either a king or a nine to make a full house. That means you have four outs.

This hand occurred between Dwight Pilgrim holding the QhJs and Mor Mohajeri holding the Ks9c at the 2010 WPT Borgata Open. All of the chips went in on the turn with Pilgrim holding the king high straight and Mohajeri holding two pair. Mohajeri needed to fill up on the river but it did not happen. The 5d came on the river giving Pilgrim the hand and the tournament win.
10. You hold 9d8d and your opponent holds QdQc. The flop comes TsJdQh. The turn is the Td. Of the choices below, which is the only one that will give you the win on the river?

Answer: 7d

Your opponent currently has a full house and you have a straight with a redraw to a flush or a straight flush. Since your opponent does have a full house the flush would do you no good. Only a straight flush will win you the hand and only the 7d can give you that straight flush.

This hand happened in the early stages of 2005 WSOP Main Event. Jennifer Harmon held the pocket queens and Corey Zeidman held the suited connectors. The flop was almost perfect for Zeidman with only AK beating his straight and his opponent made trips. He was setup to win a big hand. Harmon bet out, Zeidman raised, and Harmon called. The Td on the turn changes everything with Harmon now taking command of the hand with a full house and Zeidman left drawing to the straight flush. With Harmon holding the Qd, Zeidman only has one out, the 7d. This time Zeidman bets, Harmon raises, and Zeidman called reluctantly. He was worried Harmon held AK but he knew even if she did he had outs to the flush. He did not seem to consider she had a full house and he was drawing to only one out. Had he known that it is very doubtful he would have called. The miracle 7d came on the river with Zeidman hitting the one outer.
